PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science, and he believes that people should take action now, especially when it comes to children.

He says it takes too long to get answers from science, and he believes that people should take action now, especially when it comes to children.

Accidents are always happening in the advancement of technology and science. For example, radium was once put into the hands of wrist watches to make them glow in the dark. Radiation leaked from the wrists of people who wore the watches. Ooops! But the problem was noticed and fixed. Now, the hands still glow in the dark, but are safe because of the compounds used.

Lead was once used in gasoline, pencils and paint. Then somebody realized that it was dangerous, so the lead was replaced.

It is through mistakes that reliable technology is born.

Now, is it better to wait for answers from science as to what exactly is dangerous? Or to continue as things are and wait for science to get back to you as soon as it can after it notices a potential problem?
I'm sure there are other historical examples of similar situations to this.
