here's a topic for discussion. How come there are so many hypocrites and who do they think they're fooling? You know the type. Theyr'e the preachers and "Truth-sayers" who are crackpots that try very hard to impose there beliefs on you even though there isn't a chance in hell of that happening. Well why do these hypocrites do this? And who do they think they're fooling? Not me, thats for sure!
Joesus
They're testing the ones who know everything already. This helps maintain the high standards to be sure they can't be fooled ;D
rhymer
Hi nebul,

The number of hypocrites is unknown. The number which any one individual may think they are witnessing, probably depends mostly on the topics that person is interested in, and their ability to ask useful questions.
Identifying hypocrites can be difficult, and time consuming.
The motives of hypocrites may or may not be ulterior. Some believe their comprehension of a 'subject' is correct and feel a duty to pass it on to others, for their benefit.
Hypocrites fool themselves and those who are unable to realise their false statements and arguments.
You talk of 'no chance in Hell'. I agree; there is no Hell as far as I can ascertain.
Never presume that you have not been fooled! How would you know?
They do not think they are fooling anybody!

Best regards, Bill.
Ben
When you think about it, is what they're doing really different than what you're doing by starting this post? Who are you to say that they are crackpots? Just because your particular beliefs happen to be yours, it does not mean that they are correct. Just as you believe that their beliefs are not correct.

These people believe that imposing their beliefs on you, whatever they may be, is the right thing to do, and they're being "good" people by doing so. Are they wrong to do that? In my opinion yes, but also in my opinion you are wrong to to call these people crackpots and hypocrites simply because you may disagree with their views and actions. You've also failed to mention why these particular people are, in your opinion, hypocrites.

By making this post it seems to me that you yourself, by your definition, are a crackpot and a hypocrite simply because i disagree with the views that you are trying to impose on those who read this. You're not fooling me.

I know I just said a lot of what rhymer said, but I just had to get it out.
ganji
Hypocrites, "honest folks", and everyone in between are all engaged in a power struggle whether they know it or not and will justify and rationalize it to themselves in endlessly many different ways. It's the simple truth.
Laz
I see Hypocrites as people who are really not interested in being consistent. They see no value and no worth in being consistent and presenting a consistent view to those they meet or share their lives with.

Consistency is the key to the truth, if someone says one thing, and then a contradictory thing with equal vigor then they have a problem, but you do also...

The trick is to watch for these people and learn how they work, knowledge and understanding about them allows you to be less troubled by them.

Ultimately they are only fooling themselves wink.gif

However, although they can be deluded, they still have good ideas, can still be good people, can make good friends, and one needs to be open minded enough to not shun them because of prior indiscretions.

As for the "isn't a chance in hell" type of comment, this is problem all of it's own and will impact on other ares of one's life; once bitten, twice shy!
Laz
I've just started reading the Bhagavad Gita, and I came across this warning of hypocrisy:

The deluded ones, who restrain their organs of action but mentally dwell upon the sense enjoyment, are called hypocrites. (3.06)

The one who controls the senses by the (trained and purified) mind and intellect, and engages the organs of action to Nishkama Karma-yoga, is superior, O Arjuna. (3.07)

Perform your obligatory duty, because action is indeed better than inaction. Even the maintenance of your body would not be possible by inaction. (3.08)

It can be a bit weird to read, but if one thinks about what is being said it begins to make sense.
Guest
what bhagavad gita are you reading?
Laz
I thought there was only one?

I believe it's the sixth book of the Hindu epic Mahabharata

I agree hypocrits are everywhere....but they aren't just in the christian realm... the ones in the christian realm are just pointed out more...because the non christians are watching closely making sure the "Christ likes" don't screw up... but they tend to forget that we are human too...we make mistakes and screw up just like the rest of everyone else. Difference is that we are just saved by grace....
Hitler was a hypocrit....Clinton was a hypocrit...
We must remember...even if they claim religion doesn't necessarily mean they are religious... so don't blame God and all christians for those who take advantage of the graces.
Lindsay
BTW, are people who say, "I don't believe in God..." and then act as though they do--that is, they act as moral, ethical, socially responsible and loving people--hypocrites? smile.gif

Certainly people who say that they believe in God and then act immorally, etc., are hypocrites.

they would definatly be considered as hypocrits..
but you find more of the "i believe i God" but live in a bar during the week.
but don't necessarily judge all christians because of what a handful do.

mentally and spiritually, I would have guessed she's 12. It's a failure of the education system and the family upbringing (and probably also other determinants of healthy brain development) that an adult can maintain beliefs comparable to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

you don't like me very much do you? rolleyes.gif
I would figure that if you wanted to convince to believe that there is no God, you would use your obvious intellegence to try to prove it to me, instead of insulting me..... but i guess with so much knowledge, it is easy to overlook something so small. blink.gif
I may have been more apt to hear your side of the story... but with you start of instantly firing darts at my intellegence and belief...immediatly causes me to put up a defense towards you. ... not because i am afraid possible losing any of the " 12 year old mental capabilites"...but because you are not tactful enough to talk to me like a normal adult happy.gif

for the record.. i am not insulted...you will have to try harder to do that... smile.gif

i did that.. and my life got screwed up even more than what it is.. I am my own mind.. and in my free will I choose to love the God who created me and saved my soul and changed my life.
if that is weak....then i shall be weak in your eyes..... doesn't matter what you think of me anyway smile.gif... it is what God thinks of my beliefs and actions that matter... not someone who thinks I have the mental capability to think of a 12year old..and that I am brain washed. smile.gif lol
Can you prove to me that there is no God? Can you prove to me that my belief is totally false? Can you prove to me that what I believe is and absolute farce? Prove it to me beyond a shadow of doubt.... there can be nothing to contradict..not theories..no thesis...

you can try...but I doubt you will get anywhere. smile.gif... Because, my dear sir, whether you want to believe it or not.. God is alive wink.gif
' i know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able, to keep that which I've commited unto Him against that day.

LD, Tech, HH, Rick, whoever, here is my suggestion: Let'a skip the ad hominems about JB2 and respect him for who he is.

I understand him to be a born-again-King-James-Bible-believing-young and male Christian, who is at open-minded enough least accept Pascal's wager.

JB2, I ask you the following questions:

Other than your personal faith, added to that of others like you--which I profoundly respect--what scientific evidence do have for what you believe to be true?
How much respect do you have for what science has to offer us about the nature of things?

ad hominems, Lindsay? I would characterize it as questioning and attempting to shed light on Jellybeans primitive beliefs about the bible being the word of god and that all non-believers go to hell. These are children's tales that have no respectable place here.
Lindsay
Okay, all I am saying is: Let's challenge JB2's beliefs, not JB2, personally.

For example, I will ask JB2:

JB2, what, other than your personal faith, evidence do you have that the King James version of the Bible is infallible?

I respect your personal faith that this is true, for you; but now present your scientific evidence that this must be true for all who question you.

What is your evidence, please? Can you do this?
YES or NO?

FELLOW POSTERS: Unless you want to keep it a secret, please, in your PROFILE tell us about your BELIEFS and INTERESTS
As it is not easy to, especially at my age, to remember individual interests, or who believes what, theologically, may I suggest that in your profile you, and others, post your basic interests, and your beliefs about God, religion and the Bible so that we can all check it. You are free to add to, or change it, as you wish. BTW, I post my beliefs, at this point, in my profile.

the universe itself is scientific evidence that there is a Master Architect.... there is proof all around us... but the biggst key is faith....for they that come to God must believe that He is... without faith there is no belief.
and yes... i agree that the KJV is infallible.. there is no mistakes.. i have read the Bible through.. never found one contradiction... can you show me? and if you find one.. allow me time to show you it isn't contridiction... i don't have all the answers.. i am not all knowing.. but i can get an answer for you.

Hi Jellybean,

I am not going to give you flack for your faith. However it might interest you to know that the bible does have quite a few errors and contradictions in it. This should of course not threaten your belief, but hopefully make you ask some questions on authenticity from a book that lets face it was written by mere imperfect people.

Have a look at these for example
God sent his prophet to threaten David with how many years of famine?
(a) Seven (2 Samuel 24:13)
(B) Three (I Chronicles 21:12)

Did Joshua and the Israelites capture Jerusalem?
(a) Yes (Joshua 10:23, 40)
(B) No (Joshua 15:63)

Jesus descended from which son of David?
(a) Solomon (Matthew 1:6)
(B) Nathan(Luke3:31)

Did Judas kiss Jesus?
(a) Yes (Matthew 26:48-50)
(B) No. Judas could not get close enough to Jesus to kiss him (John 18:3-12)
Lindsay
JB2, like Culture, I offer the following in the spirit of dialogue, not as flack:
Check out Acts 12, in the King James version. It refers "to Jews"--as does much of the New Testament--as if to imply that Jesus and his followers, including Peter and the other Disciples, were not Jews. The Good News Bible translates it simply as "the people"--a lot less anti-semitic tone.

Acts 12: 4, translates Paska as Easter--the name of the Norse goddess whose festival was observed at the vernal equinox, about March 21. All modern tanslations use PASSOVER, which is what it was, for all Jews, including those who became Christians. It seems that the KJV has an obvious error in translation?

BTW, the Romans called this celebration aurora (dawn). The Greeks called it eos, from which we get our term 'east'.
