Curious

Already born curious at the age of nineteen
I went into a coma to the in between
Saw many things unseen but more than anything
I saw the love I take to be the love I bring
Saw the law of love through the in between unseen
That I would live by love in spite of everything
Above all love could answer all my questioning
Questioning my answer if you know what I mean
The answer I guess to the question being yes

Not to be a Judas nor a Peter even
Not a doubting Thomas but a curious Steven

Overcome

With liberty and justice for some
The best of us the worst of us say
The rest of us wait to overcome

Dreaming of some overcoming day
Wondering how it may ever come
But tomorrow never comes that way

When how is not then but now to fight
For the many as good as any
Held down too long but becoming strong

Now is the how or never because
The time is right if ever it was
To bring in that day out of this night

Bring in the spring to rise in the fall
With liberty and justice for all

Maybe May Be

for all my friends all over the world

When all we have is our dreams it seems
Time then to dream whenever we are
Now maybe find out how not too far
We rise who fall not too far after all

Side by side like two stars in the sky
Or three then four when a thousand more
To rise and fall we who wonder why
After all ask what we are here for

But never mind how it seems now we
Are for as far as the eye can see
Even though dreams even so come true
Maybe as happy as we may be

And may we maybe we see trouble
Get through whatever never to know
Trials but transcend them all and each
Never make that same mistake again

Falling but to rise again when we
Learn to earn then whatever they teach
Maybe this may be the way we win
What may be and not what may have been

Revolving evolving when we go
May we live love then may it double
Triple or whatever it may to
Stay forever for the love of you

We are whatever we are now and
Maybe it may be it seems to me
Maybe may be how we understand
This is what came true for me and you

Happiness was never out of reach
Rise like a phoenix fall like a star
The sky is the limit now we know
We who though we go are who may be

Reality for better or worse
Maybe may be and not just what must
We hope and trust to stardust through dust
Riding the wheel of the universe

Gold

The gold miner does not share in the gold
He gets what he gets does what he is told
And digs for the pigs until he gets old
Having been bought and sold: out in the cold

Still though the gold mine owner does not share
Where he is going he will not need it there

Tumbleweeds

for Franziska for everything

I watch tumbleweeds grow even though
Apparently slow yet even so
I see them grow rounder get fatter
Each day if only I look away
I know down the lane in the meadow
Wanderers grow to wonder like me

When they tumble to stumble upon
Why they go then before they are gone

Stumbling up out of the ground they say
Tumbling we are the weeds that matter
With what it takes to make a snowman
Here in the desert who know we can
Blow on out of here anytime we
Feel good and ready lonely but free

How we tumble to stumble upon
Why we go now before we are gone

Stumbling myself in a jumble I
Find myself tumbling wondering why
Though tumbling not yet stumbling on to
Why I go like the tumbleweeds do
But one thing I am pretty sure of
Is what it is as let go and love

When I tumble to stumble upon
Why I go then before I am gone

Blue Eyes

for the Laughing Daffodil

The Daffodil shows me
How warm blue eyes can be
My mother's were brown and
I never understood
Blue eyes could look so good
But now I understand

The Daffodil knows me
And sees me through the blue
Of the sky sees me through
The Daffodil owes me
Nothing but she gives me
This song that outlives me

Fall

This is how America will fall
If it ever does
Conquered by the fascists after all

No future because
Of the fact the fascists love the past
Only and lonely

No now but what was
When held fast by the past first then last
Slow to forget yet fast not to know
No how but has been

So how now may be
Conquered by the fascists after all
If it happens then

This is how America will fall
But get back up when
We remember the future again

Country Boy

for my landlady Linda
the Lady from New Yawk
for being understanding

My shoulders are brown having shouldered the sun
I came to be a country boy now I am one

First I left my keys out of my pockets then
My wallet too when I never need it again
But once a month at WinCo for all I know
For even though late a country boy even so

As with dusty dogses of the desert I
Just try to make sense of life before I must die

Oyster

Not touchy not much he must just be sensitive
In the give and take he could take as well as give
But would give them hell as well and never forgive
For awhile anyway for a day or two say

Even though this Steven-ness could go to day three
When should you smile then he could not stay cross somehow
At a loss for words again but through poetry
Because it was his only way how then as now

However he had been whenever he would be
To be just how he must be now then to be who
For stubbornness in questing for the best I guess
Does what he does his way whatever he may do

Through life to everlasting possibility
Or pursuit of the impossible more or less
Never mind the rest should the best of him allow
Because the one and only could be lonely too

Not touchy not much he must just be as you see
An oyster who has made of all his pain a pearl
Of great price costing all of it all for a girl
Or in my case me as the Princess and the Pea

Understood

long laugh the Daffodil

I.

Love is what we come here for
All of us becoming here
We who love us less or more
Giving by forgiving live
Up to love or down to fear
We are what we love to be

Not forgiving fearfully
Is not living not to me
By the giving of my heart
I come to become a part
Of everyone and all of
Us completed by our love

II.

When it comes to love above
All I do have plenty of
It like you but never knew
I would ever be one who
Wished a wish that could come true
An ideal becoming real

By its light aright to see
How love now is you me too
Brought to be through love to feel
We are having come this far
After all not too far but
Further than we knew we could

III.

Far enough to find out what
It feels like when it is real
In and of the why we are
Who are love by love to be
Being you by being me
Now when we are understood

What it feels like then is love
When it feels like what is to
Be embracing facing you
To embrace reality
Face the possibility
Maybe it was meant to be

Standing heart to hand you and
Me too we who understand

Fishbone Clouds

another one for Paul
the last one pretty small

Fishbone clouds are wishbones in the sky if you ask me
When I see them then I give flight to fantasy
Or else they just take it taking flight to stripe the sky
With something to wonder about if not know why
Unmaking the day done in the colors of the sun
Through the fishbone clouds to the wishbones of destiny

Through day to night from light to light when seen then unseen
Becoming fingers through between the stars see what I mean

It Is

for Paul Torrez

There is something there
I confess I guess
That is everywhere
My faith more or less

Below as above
But what do I know
I think it is love
Above as below

So what I think of
It is it is love

Again

I look within my heart and find you there
O Laughing Daffodil who are the air
I breathe to bequeath you the exhalation
Of my love transcending explanation

Better than I say written down this way

So you may remember me when someday
The November wind has blown me away
And you look within too and you find me
There that I have not left you behind me

Where to be again the lost is found when
You look within your heart and find me where
We were there then in the garden again

The Meaning

as much as anything

My children fell in love with afar
Going away and so they are
But their dad is in the desert where
Though nowhere there at least the air
Is clear out here where I am now to
Do what it is and how I do
Being one to get my doing done
If one must do it I am one

For love though never mind about
Going out but about to find out
The meaning in the when between
Growing to know whatever I mean
Revolving to the meaning of
What evolving then it means to be
Why we are whether near or far
With love from afar for everyone

What anything means anyway
That I can only explain as love
Just lonely me for all I know
Not going though growing even so
Going my way I stay today
Showing how knowing now becomes me
Here where at least the air is clear
Seeing the light by the desert sun

What tomorrow learns today I see
Turns out better than yesterday
By learning when turning daily
I progress then like this poetry
That being mine means everything
To me and to some means something
The meaning as much as anything
Enough for me or anyone

What I Do for Love

for Judy Muehr and menthols in the mail

It may not be important but
I will say it no matter what
Still saying it my way of course

The truth as spoken by the mad
A bastard of the great divorce
Daresay but say it good or bad

For you never know it may be
So for all we know as maybe
Something you never spoke of

Out loud anyway whenever
What is shared unspoken between
Has broken through out loud for love

Shared there between as what we mean
Released to life and spoken free
The words that have awoken me

A possibility or not
Produced by our propinquity
Mad-spoken to reality

Remembered from what we forgot
Recalled from what we never knew
But always was in me and you

And furthermore this either/or
Is way more than enough for me
To live die and go to hell for

Live going through die going to
But either way improbably
What I do for love is poetry

The Real Thing

You can hate me and call me a God-hating
Mofo so-and-so but it seems like masturbating
To me when I see you in your ecstasy

Perception is reality and that is just me
And that is just you so whatever you do
Just be happy but you really must know even so

If that is what is up there I can stay down below
And do the real thing in reality

The Likes of You

for my Facebook friends

I would get what I could yet
What I get is you are it
Met unmet the it to get

In the meaning in between
Facebook friends you should know this
Where you know there what I mean

Every like is like a kiss
To me you mean this to me
You make being better be

Going though not knowing
Just where why should I care
If I know or not just go?

The distance not too far
From here to everywhere
When I am here where you are

The many chosen few
Then we are anywhere
And though not knowing growing

Any of the many where
We know life is tough enough
Not to make it not so rough

Better than it was because
To me you mean this to me
Facebook friends you should know this

You make being better be
Tendered by the likes of you
Every like is like a kiss

No Regret

Confusion arises when illusion comes to be
What is not surprises when it becomes apparently
And though we surmise how the surprise is what is now

When what is not becomes what is and then again somehow
Turning for the best as if it were some kind of test
Of our imagination learning curiosity

It seems to me that anything might be then if we
Want it bad enough when our dreams are tough enough to see
Illusion through confusion to possibility

But confusion-free illusion needs us both to agree
What is or is not that we remember or forgot
It might have been illusion that led to my confusion

You would shine on fine without me no doubt even so
But think before you tell me no about how we could grow
Forever might be now or never for all we know

With you or without you I am on my way today
To find out for myself about reality for me
And should you say no tell me go still I will go my way

What is or is not I will have no regret:
I love you (and you still may love me yet)

Madsongs

I. American Too

You say I should leave my country
Who tell me I could go

My freedom makes you feel unfree
And I guess you would know
Who have no idea of freedom
And chosen to be dumb
In the face of monstrosity

"Love it or leave
It" you say you believe

Still I would speak free
My country too and unlike you
Who tell me leave my land
Now I think I understand
How I will always be

To love but love it true
American too

II. The Highest Form of Foolery

In admitting an inadmissible idea
Deceiving myself to be a fool but to be a
Fool for love the highest form of foolery to be
Though much too old so bold as to be such foolery
And no fool like an old fool like an old fool like me

What does it mean in the in between that I have been
When I loved then and still and now I will be again
Believing what but love itself existentially
What do I do but choose to be and not not to be?
Nor do I go too far being love is how we are

And no fool like an old fool like an old fool like me
As a fool for love the highest form of foolery

III. Little Old Me

So here I am in the here and now
Alive and I guess this is how
I do it getting through by a smile
Hoping to do it for awhile

Being in tune with the universe
Doing better having done worse
Wandering wondering on and on
Going until going is gone

And doing until doing is done
Being me and the only one
Knowing what to do growing to be
Only lonely little old me

Seeing myself alone I see
Myself being in good company

My Star

a star known as the Laughing Daffodil

We found each other in the dark
Attracted by a spark
Of hope that someone understood
As if anyone could
But someone did and here we are
To be each other's star

A spark across the dark from one
To one a love begun
To never end to have a friend
Forever understood
By someone who is one who would
By you and by me too

And so we are each other's star
And my star I love you

Dog Star

Black and tan at either end
And his four paws
Bow-wow-wowser is my friend
Simply because

Whose snout is it all about?
Well I know who
I let in and I let out
Who gets me through
Day in day out and no doubt
Dog I love you

Rising like the dog star
Bowser here you are

To Resist

Built on bravery and pride
Slavery and genocide
Liberty and justice for
Some becomes another war
In sight to fight the right who
Wrongly now would punish you
And me should we see just how
This is no democracy

But with bravery and pride
Let the rest of us agree
Time has come to turn the tide
Just do what we must do now
To resist as we insist
That the rest of us exist
Though left out we have that right
Left us to resist tonight
