Manatee Man (work in progress...)

I like to see a manatee
Or two or three you know I do

I can dig a dugong can you
Dig a dugong in the ocean
Mind a manatee in motion
Or find time to rhyme one with two
For love to be beneath the sea
In dugongly devotion true?

Well I can a manatee man
And devotee of dugongs too

The Stupid Hour

The dirty tricks of politics
Practiced by the indefensible
Imperial style at the stupid hour
Put me in a bad mood right away
In the morning without warning when
I wake up to bad news again

The stupider then the greater their power
I see now and somehow it hurts me
How we allow such monstrosity
Out of fear for that is how it is here
Now out of tune with the universe
Though love gets better fear gets worse

The madness incomprehensible
Makes no sense I see and it sticks
To me as it brings midnight midday
At the stupid hour a nightmare of fear
But their fear is not what I dream of
And I am not afraid of love

Not fearful enough to conform
Wising up when stupid is the norm

In Dog I Trust

for Alexander and all my friends in Aklan

If she pees there he must too
Bowser and Marisol
One outdoes another
Does because the other does
Doing what dogs do

One and two and then them all
Because it always was
And must be that they see
Spelled between them in their pee
Being just to be

As sister dog and brother
Who see no reason why
But why not do or die
For dogly duty somehow
Being without fear

Seeing how in dog they trust
When how of why is now
There where is why not here
What dogs do just how they must
Doing what dogs do

In dog I trust then too

Unafraid

Fear causes the resentment
Preventing the contentment
Of bully boys who get mad
Have it all yet have it bad
When actually they are sad

Since bully boys need love too though
They have trouble asking so
Tough they think they know to be
Their bully boy reality
But are afraid of me

Since a bullied boy knows how
Love must rise for fear to fall
Rage to turn the page be gone
Like the dark before the dawn
Time moves forward and life goes on

Love is how of the here and now
Here where I know no regret
Better now than ever yet
Love remembers then I forget
To get mad after all

When the future meets the past
Unafraid of love at last

Even Steven

I.

Late fifties smoker of Kools
Probably doomed rented roomed
In the desert far away

Unglad sufferer of fools
Suffering them anyway
Writing poetry madly

Lighting up to start the day
Uncut hair still mostly there
Long short of groomed sort of doomed

II.

Deciding to have his say
When others would not sadly
One to speak for who could not

Once a right good Lutheran
God misunderstood as fear
Not quite as good as he thought

Wrong then left a better man
Than when he felt better than
More or less for now and here

III.

Somehow being come to be
Better than he was as he
Is and does the best he can

Schizophrenic paranoid
Come back to life who should not
Some said with his mind destroyed

With his right mind left behind
By unkind reality
But his right heart could not be

IV.

As one who never forgot
One when he could then would not
Getting it but getting late

Better late than never though
Someone who has come to go
Even Steven even so

As one suffering gladly
From the old familiar pain
Of being human again

V.

Giving it all he has got
Left and right now he feels good
Being to be understood

For when he found forever
Then it was now or never
Whenever for whatever

Having come to terms with fate
For what is nor what is not
November now as ever

Loving being loved to live
To remember and forgive

About Poetry (work in progress...)

I have learned a few things about poetry
Like try not to say but to make me see
(If you see what I mean) the meaning is this
It lives between the lines and it feels like a kiss

You have to show me how for me to know
Inspire me to see in my heart within me
Show me you know how to feel what is real
And always leave room for the daffodil to bloom

Though I am a madman actually
Mad rhymes for my best or worst of times
I have thought a lot about poetry

Yvonne Moved On

for Bud

Big shovelheaded wild Yvonne moved on
(If that was her name) she went as she came
Who came as she went too whatever she meant
Left leaving me doggone glad she is gone
A fully leaded bulldog big and bully

But there through the wild bamboo you can see
Her manatee scowl now out on the prowl
Out getting her groove on gone off moving on
Though leaving her memoire cherie with me
To never forget her wherever she went

Out shovelheading about living fully
Moving on big shovelheaded wild Yvonne

Fig the Big

for Linda, Fig's mom

Fig the big le Fig(aro)
Fattest cat by far I know
Belly out on either side
Is a feline double-wide
Sitting in the sink to be
Cool in his enormity
When I go to the bathroom
The elephant in the room

Fig the big le Fig(aro)
Can get stuck in the window
If he is not careful to
Slip and slide and slither through
On the exhalation of
The inflation of his love
For there is so much of him
Or nothing but to love him

Fattest cat by far I know
Fig the big le Fig(aro)

As it Happens

for Daffodil

You thought I was gay for the first year or so

I wondered too then but now I know
Who I like as it were is you who are her

I thought you were the Laughing Daffodil
Then seven years now when I always will

As it happens to be how with me
Now somehow so happy it happens to be

As it happens happiness happens to me

For a Mouse and Me

Home Depot in the winter and
Life goes on I see
In the garden section where
I saw two reasons

Some common thyme in common time
A mouse within a store-bought house
Herb with a verb an action rhyme
In time with thyme where sticks and bricks
Obfuscate where a mouse lived there
Gone home forgotten in a pot
Was there a mouse there? I guess not

Spring is coming I understand
For a mouse and me
At the intersection there
Of the two seasons

When they come together
A change then in the weather

About Now

for the Laughing Daffodil

I. The Good Stuff

It feels good to be kind
Like I am growing
Puts me in my right mind
Like life is showing
Me the good stuff how to be
Human by humanity

It feels good to be me
I find being kind
Part of a family
Finally knowing
If better late than never
How now is our forever

And how this is enough
Now is the good stuff

II. The Rhyme of Time

Now is the rhyme of time because
Of all the when that ever was
Or will be then it still will be
Now again how it is for me

The only when I ever am
Or was for I am bound to be
Again now yes sir then yes ma'am
Now what and why and how I know

So now I am though round I go
Then to be found now when I do
A present time commends me to
And recommends now then to you

Forever how whenever was
The rhyme of time is what now does

III. Before I Go

I want to be better want to unfetter
Myself from my past at last
Would like to evolve before I go and grow
Try to solve as I revolve
The riddle of why I am before I die

Live though I may never know
The reason in the season of my turning
Tomorrow from yesterday
Whatever the reason never stop learning
Never turn today away

And being better for having been worse
To be a star pupil of the universe
A student of being here now to be
In the fall the best of all the rest of me

The Gospel of Austerity

They left the good news of their Lord
For bad news gone right overboard

The gospel of austerity
Means all for me and none for thee
The masters say this is the way

After a crash to smash the poor
The more according to Ayn Rand

Reminding us and binding us
Behind them so that we may see
Again as always now as then

But mind you they are finding us
Steady and ready for our say

We would like to ask some questions
The makers take no suggestions
Though up above from down below

(They are afraid of us you know
Actually who understand

That they are doomed factually
Only a matter of time and
When yesterday then not today)

Let austerity remind us
How that was then and this is now

And let us put them behind us
Let it be now not then again
Now that we know what we must do

To share is socialism to
Makers taking from me and you

With their false gospel coming true
Old impotents swing rubber swords
Bring nightmares sing like overlords

But I know now and you do too
The time has come to overcome

Weighed in the balance found wanting
The masters of the all for some
Succumb to their nightmare haunting

The right is wrong but we are strong
All that is left is to break through

Rise up and sweep them all away
In the dustbin of history
Just what we must do to be free

Now then has been and this is how
Tomorrow comes for yesterday

We understand that this is war
Our freedom up to you and me
Who know what we are fighting for

Though they are then so we are now
Left to be right how we must fight

Before today becomes tonight
The clash of time the time to smash
The gospel of austerity

The Magic

for Daffodil

In the lonely desert the sound
Of one dog barking in the dark
The only sound for miles around
Down here while up there like a spark
A star is falling down

Though where it falls is here where I
Reach out my hand up to the sky
So that it will not touch the ground
And I embrace it to my heart
Now may the magic start

The magic is the music of
The universe a song of love
That I have heard now from afar
Have felt within me who we are
And how we never die

A song unending unbegun
Of when the stars fell I caught one
Where I will keep the magic to
Remind me then and there of you
Together though apart

The magic calling us to be
Whatever is whenever how
We know to be forever now
Or never like a falling star
The magic: you and me

America Again

Our little fascist problem in America keeps
The rich up but the poor down like the mother who weeps
That her children only mattered until they were born
Like when the soldier mattered until he got shattered
Then after that got little but a little fascist scorn

Our little fascist problem will never go away
Until the rest of us wake up and fight back someday
The right thinks they are right for they have been wrong so long
Everyone forgets they are because they are so strong
And though we shatter still we matter so now this is how

With all the money in the world they think they can win
Nor will the poor fight back they think but let us begin
Who struggle day and night to fight this wrong make this right
Not that way of yesterday but by tomorrow's light
And though they may forget today let us remember now

The more they forgot us the more they brought together
The poor who remember love before fearful weather
Of November who we are reclaim our dignity
As American as anyone with liberty
And justice not for some of us but all humanity

Our little fascist problem in America got
Bigger when we looked away then but now we are not
We got discouraged and they got their way for awhile
All the money in the world their anger and their bile
But by surprise we rise to win: America again

Illusion

The illusion of duality
With its us and them mentality
This superstitious opposition
Of mine not yours and not hers but his
The paranoia from tribe to tribe
With suffering I need not describe
Because you know and feel what I mean

The black and the white of suspicion
Causing a shadow to fall between
This fearfully lonely position
Always was and will be as it is
Entirely unnecessary
Unnatural though ubiquitous:
So this is what has come between us

And we would be a community
Should we ever be given the chance
But we could never learn how to dance
When we were supposed to be afraid
Of each other then our minds were made
Up for us a chorus of the sheep
The shepherds kept from going too deep

It is only an illusion
Sown to sow lonely confusion

There Will Be Stars

for Daffodil

Summer wind is blowing
The sky is high and bright
The cactus is growing
And showing off its flowers
There will be stars tonight
And all of them are ours

Constellations named and
Unnamed who understand
Our configuration
Here on the desert sand
The arcs of sparks of love
As above so below

The sky can tell us why
Though we already know
Turning and returning
Another passing by
Each other even so
As below so above

Here alongside learning
If only for awhile
Never in the turning
To ever turn away
But say we ever may
Returning with a smile

The sky is high and bright
There will be stars tonight

Elephant Songs

for Alexander in Aklan

I. The Elephant in the Room

See the elephant in the room?
His way today of yesterday
Is trumpeting judgmentally
Of iron inequality

His not hers nor yours anyway
Or the never-now-ever-then

The elephant is in the womb
For frightened sheep how they should be
Nor ever would be free again
Of what only they never see

For fearful hate consumed with doom
Of the likes of us you and me

Love could be how we finally
See the ever-then-never-now
Free for now the only way how
Of the elephant in the room

II. Seeing the Elephant

It is about race so they say it is not
Firehoses tried to wash the memory
Away but the stain remains I see

Pain written red in black and white now of
How I remember though they forgot
The biting dogs of hatred on TV

As some remember more immediately
Beaten on the street in the name of love
I was a child but it still hurts me

Seeing the elephant looking away
No more this way I can see yesterday
Tomorrow today to my sorrow

I hoped we would be better someday somehow
But I know we could do better than we do now

III. Iron and Rust

His table is laid but the elephant is afraid

And what is he so afraid of? He is afraid of change
Apparently inherently I find kind of strange
Though once I was no stranger to the danger of this fear

But I learned through change the only constant now and here
That how to be is growing knowing all will be all right
Sure as night comes after day then day comes after night

The elephant is afraid now how his bed is made

When some things are unchanging some becoming as they must
Is when we learn the difference between iron and rust

Regret

To remember what you would not that you could not forget
This would be regret

Whatever you would do
Though some never do
(I took forever to)
You should know for sure
To let go is the cure
The only one yet

I would learn the hard way (the only way I ever do)
But could not forget

Let go and go
On going: no regret

Destiny for Two

for Daffodil

Having a cup of tea taking a wait-and-see
Attitude of gratitude for making it this far
More or less unscathed on the outside anyway
Only on the inside now from lonely yesterday
When fright at night reminds me then was not all right
Though now looks promising so will be the thing I sing

I will be mindful still of what is behind me
Where I will find it there not to bind but remind me
I waited for tomorrow when it never came
Then it became today again only yesterday
Here where it is today because it always was
Being all the same today by any other name

And yet every night tomorrow comes at midnight
Let tomorrow never come till it becomes today
Surprising tonight by this rising light I see
When I look in my heart then and I find how you are
There with me where we share this cup of destiny
For two: for you the best and the rest of me with you

Having waited having seen being having been
Seeing you be Daffodil I am again

Backlit

for Daffodil

When you said I was beautiful I was
You made me that way then I was because
You saw my body backlit by my soul
And if I rock it is because you roll

When I say you are beautiful you are
Some miracle become some shooting star
But not as beautiful as you will be
Then blooming your beautiful destiny

When I look for you I need not look far
There you are up in the sky above me
And down in my heart where the songs all start
Where you are too then because you love me

Though I say it now and I always do
As I always have so I always will
It goes without saying how I love you
My star my song my Laughing Daffodil

And if I rock it is because you roll
I see your body backlit by your soul

Chocolate-Covered Berries and Brie

for Daffodil

When we sat on Pride Rock as we do
With chocolate-covered berries and Brie
By the setting sun of Saturday
My legs were desert brown by yours as white
As the moon waxed later then that night
Through gossamer to porcelain and on
My mind as you are I find my star
Rising afar where you are like my dawn
My sun to warm me when you are gone
Making me live then to see you love me

So I would show you I love you too
How I see you in the sky above me
Now love is found all around we see
How we agree loving you loving me
Something like forever whatever
Some may say when we love us anyway
Today like yesterday then we are
Tomorrow the way we will always be
As we for something like forever
With chocolate-covered berries and Brie
