Future Embrace

Change is terrifying
Change is clarifying
See tomorrow rearrange the sky

I can see embracing dreams come true

Love is terrifying
Love is clarifying
See the future written you and I

Embracing one another as new

It will not be scary
You need not be wary
Tomorrow comes today if we try

The future and I both embrace you

This Riddle Love

Wounded wary from the sins
Of betraying lovers lost
Knowing too well that the cost
Is no less than everything
Broken hearts begin to sing
This is how the hope begins

Stirring in abandoned hearts
Which will not be silenced now
Life now turns from death somehow
First a taste then wanting more
Hearts beat faster than before
This is how the magic starts

What was done becomes undone
Hearts beat hard and heads grow light
Things feel strange but strangely right

Hearts are pounding one to one
Out of body out of breath
Life-rush of the little death

On earth heaven is begun
Two by two by me and you
This is how the dream comes true

Point and purpose of it all
Nothing better and above
All else soars this riddle love
By which we are raised to be
Beautiful again and free
Rising only when we fall

Soaring on imagination
Pure crystalline trajectory
Evocation invocation
Of that which some say dare not be
But the blazing revelation
Opens our eyes to the hidden
Truth that nothing is forbidden
To dangerous dreamers who dare
To dance on water skip on air
And sail transcendent everywhere

Come fly with me into madness
We will give the slip to sadness
Giddyup to giddy gladness
On the unicorns of the dawn
Till the last of the dark has gone
Mad with beautiful tragedy
The kindest kind of comedy
Astride horned horses of the morn
Ride with me where our dreams are born
Where truth and beauty make us free:

Make love make love make love with me

Two for One

Come along with me
On a date with fate
Into ecstasy
It is not too late
Not too late now nor
Will it ever be
The days stand still for
Acts of destiny
And they always will
As they have and still:

Two for one are we
Nothing is stronger

Nothing lasts longer
Than when two ones make
One and we can take
On all anyone
Can dream under sun
Or moon: two for one
On a date with fate
Into ecstasy
It is not too late
Come along with me

If Only

Perhaps I was mistaken
Perhaps that seat was taken
Just a small
After all
A digression
Yet one which leaves me shaken
And forever changed

My heart rearranged
As it threatens now to fall
In love once again
But I fear the pain
Nor do I know what to do
Except that I should
If only I could
Somehow forget about you

In Your Face

Alone with hope as the light grows dimmer
Wrapped in blankets in the summer
Scanning darkening skies for a glimmer
Smarting as the world grows dumber
And as hope and I keep growing slimmer
I might as well enjoy life now

They say if I give up the bad guys win
Whether or not the narrow will allow
Or the constipated agree
Homegrown foreign hither and yon

The crazies bookend both sides yang and yin
I might as well keep keeping on
Straight down the middle after this riddle
Despite the judgmental judges of sin

What the hell might as well make the most of me
Time to get to it time to just do it
I might be mistaken but I was born free
Like you to do what all of us once knew
We are here in pursuit of destiny
Not just to wait but to grab hold of fate

So whether the tightasses like it or not
I will do what I am here for but forgot

Gag Order

"From politics it was an easy step to silence." - Jane Austen (1775-1817) British Novelist

I must try to be funny no more
All here is anger trouble and war
I make the conservatives furious
But find their hostility curious
They detest questions but I have one
Thus new persecution is begun:

If everything is awful
Does that make it unlawful
To have a sense of humor
And must you start a rumor
That I am just a terrible man
Attacking me as only you can
Whisper and gossip defame and smear
When all I sought was to bring some cheer?

But I should know better than to ask a question
Here at the end of the age now we laugh no more
The only thing they hate more is a suggestion
Like perhaps they might have been wrong about the war

I am not here to fight but just to write
I have plenty of troubles of my own
The might of the right makes them always right
Rule the world then! But please: leave me alone

A Place for Me?

Passing through a long dark tunnel I came
Out on the far side at the other end
Of a nightmare one which I need not blame
On anyone now I just need a friend
A true friend like you who helped me break through

I hope you will stay the rest of the way
With me as my eyes adjust to this light
It could be that I need to learn to see
All over again after that dark night
Of my soul now as I heal to be whole
Once more I remember what friends are for

Friends are for loving and so I love you
What I wished for back in the dark came true
To have a friend and I need wish no more
Here on the far side at the other end
Of a nightmare all I need is a friend

And should you ever need a place to stay
There is within my heart a vacancy
Where you could stay a lifetime or a day
Here with me in friendly propinquity

As you have blessed me now I would bless you
For what might have been might always still be
We know we are friends and our hearts are true
Is there within your heart a place for me?

Hope Becomes Hope

The longer I live the more I care
For others having become aware
How it feels to be ill and in pain
Or to lose it all once and again
For when trouble comes it means to stay

I would like to help scare it away
From good people suffering bad things
One benefit experience brings
Is that I can feel just how it feels
When trouble rocks you back on your heels

Just to be able to say "I care"
And to mean it because I was there
When younger to have known that hunger
That uncertainty that gnawing fear
That just maybe there is no hope here

The longer I live the more I know
That there is always hope even though
You cannot see it even then so
I would like to help someone to see
Hope because that becomes hope for me

Patricia Lance Forever

The love of my mother is with me still
A bond which nothing can sever
In death as in life and it always will
Remain through the pain a beacon to me
The light in the darkness by which I see
Guiding me now and forever

Immortal love which death can never kill
Rock of my soul this world can never break
And when I stumble I get up and take
Comfort that she believed in me
Enough to go through hell for me on earth
To give her life for me and call it worth
It all and call her greatest joy the birth
Of her one child who grew to be this man

If I were loved by no other
Still I am loved by my mother
Forever as only a mother can

A Teachable Moment of Clarity

Having long striven having been driven
To amount to something now I stand at
The crossroads of a teachable moment

This is a time in which fate would foment
Change to rearrange my reality
And now fate is doing precisely that

It is in the darkness I learn to see
At dusk I learn to hope for coming dawn
In winter I appreciate the spring
And see the light brightest when it is gone

Now fate offers me a challenge to grow
To seek and find the all in everything
And learn the more I know the less I know

To taste of the joy of simply being
And experience the peace of seeing
Not through rose-colored glasses nor through black
Embracing what I have not what I lack

A teachable moment of clarity
It is not too late for this gift of fate:
I rise now to my higher destiny

Of a summer Sunday morning
Swing my steps to take me wide
With a notion without warning
I am going now: outside

I have brooded too long gloomy
Where the sunbeams never shine
Out about to still more roomy
Places I will claim for mine

Should the bagels all be eaten
Down at Starbucks on the square
Never mind I am unbeaten
Surely they have coffee there

Pour it steamy strong and tarry
Black as coal and hot as hell
Jolt me till the sky is starry
That I write alive and well

I know I ought to go to church
But like Morticia Gomez Lurch
And Grandmama and Fester too
My father son and maybe you
I mean to wait for Tenebrae
Lest I be overdone by day

Yet step by step one at a time
In line by line eccentric rhyme
Headlong into this sunny clime
Of a summer Sunday morning
Swing my steps to take me wide
With a notion without warning

I am going now: outside

What is poetry to me?

Nothing less than everything
Whether scorned or understood
It is my own heart I sing
Written down in my own blood

No parlor game nor hobby
Point and purpose of my life
Vocation not vacation
Lonely friend and only wife

No cheap trick for attention
Profoundest obligation
The still point the suspension
Of disbelief for magic

The crossing of life and death
Triumphant now then tragic
In my heartbeat on my breath
Living growing in each cell

The made maker makes to be
Curse and build destroy and bless
Heaven purgatory hell
Nothing more and nothing less

Who I am and how I live
It is that on which I feed
All I have and what I give
It is everything I need

What am I but poetry?
I do not write for the shelf
Not to make these books you see
But to save my soul myself

What is poetry but me?

So Late it Was Early

Up so late it was early so I went
To Starbucks to set a new precedent
And I was first a first for me at five
The girl and I surprised to be alive
In darkness as the only ones who were

She asked what I would have I said to her
"Surprise me" as she had already done
And as I had her too and it was fun
Some coffee so strong I needed a spoon
A big fluffy bagel under the moon

A few stars twinkled blue as they knew soon
The night would be over when we must all
Arise from summer dreams into the fall
Stars and girls and bagels and coffee-spoons
Fall's rising suns and summer's setting moons

Shrinking Violet

I have grown too small
For these clothes which fall
Freely from this frame
Which still bears my name
But which got stripped down
In a lonesome town
Purified through pain
Never found again
Just what you see here
What is left of me

Small sharp and severe
Respiring just so
My children can be
Not bereft of me
I live as I can
If transparently
A visible man
Shrinking visibly
I have a few friends
Who telephone me

As I make amends
With mortality
I usually hide
But if I go out
Escape from inside
Two legs and one chance
Kind young people shout
"Hello Mr. Lance!"
The older ones know
A little more fate
So they smile and wait
To see me below

Here I am and there you are
Too far away some would say
Looking up at this same star

I see it another way:

This star shines for you and me
Lending starlit unity
To this night which we both share

Transcendental by starlight
You are here as I am there
No one is closer tonight

You to me as I to you
Star-connected two by two
By this pure diamond light

This is why they have those rings
By which some would seek to bind
Stars by diamonds but find
That "as above so below"
Does not mean that earthbound things
Backward bind the sky and so:

In the heart not on the hand
Promises are made which stand
In the sky where you and I
Living that which cannot die
Sparkle for eternity

I want so much
Nor want but need
To feel your touch
Who haunt me feed
You with my heart
As two flames start
Two flames which know
They are but one
Now as they grow
Their dance begun
Inside of you
Inside of me
One and the same

One flame for two
Which soon will see
Fulfillment in
Its unity
As skin to skin
As touch for touch
We consummate
The will of fate
We need so much
We burn to be
Two of one flame
Who burn the name
Of destiny

Out of the heart of the night
Not infernal nor divine
Timeless and hidden from sight
From the night's heart into mine
Breathes a wandering spirit
Listen and you may hear it

This is what it sings to me:

I will love before I die
That tender intimacy
Which I thought had passed me by
Tonight is looking for me

I thought I had lost my mind
Along with my hope alone
Flying solo flying blind
But my address was unknown

Not in heaven nor in hell
But right here inside my heart
Love will find me wise and well
I can feel the magic start

Whisper you will come to me
Come and keep me company

Where Dreams Begin

Negative positive both or neither
All I can do is tell you what is true
For me and we always see that either
I am figured out or else seen as too
Difficult and dense to bother about
Writing about change and things which seem strange
Unusual of that there is no doubt
Perhaps I am too different for you

But I think not I think you just forgot
What poetry can be when thought is free

I might have theories or suggestions
But I have no answers only questions
And if you want to hear I will be there
And I will hear you too as everywhere
I listen for the still small voice within
Which whispers the truth beyond up and down
Beyond any spin beyond smile and frown
Beyond good and evil where dreams begin

Finding myself where some call paradise
Losing myself sleeping as much as I
Am able with daily dosings of rice
And trying unsuccessfully to die
Between fits of exercise while grieving
For what is gone but will not go away
Such hope as I find is found believing
That someone will find these poems someday

If someone does what might that someone say?
"A fool turned paradise to private hell
But although he lived badly he wrote well"?
For this I will hope for this I will grope
My way through my day which always is night
Trusting to fate it will all turn out right...

If late

The Way it Was

Struggling with a sense of paralysis
Of waiting for the other shoe to drop
A feeling immune to analysis
One which no antidepressant can stop
This new disease this sword of Damocles
This unknown terror destroying my days
I fear that it will be like this always
Until it happens then happens again
I live in anticipation of pain

I know I am not supposed to show it
But it is coming soon and I know it
All I wanted to be was a poet
At least I did my best and got as good
In such time as I had here as I could
But grieve for those younger with their hunger
For their new lives for their husbands and wives
And all the children who never will be
And what we mistook for eternity

We thought it would last forever but
It never does
Always remember no matter what
The way it was

Just Me

I like poetry
To be orderly

I do not expect
To be understood
And as I get good
At it more reject
What I try to say
Anyway I see
As they turn away
And they turn on me

Witticism yes
Verbal winks and such
Criticism no
Thank you very much

Yes I will confess
I am sensitive
To insults some give
In the name of God
Or country or tribe
It always sounds odd
To shout sacred things
In a diatribe

(As the cuckoo sings)

I like poetry
To be orderly

But that is just me

Hollow and alone
No feeling nor thought
Except fear somehow
Dread of the unknown
I asked a friend what
Was left to me now
She told me to do
What I had not done
Though there is no new
Thing under the sun
All things are new for
One undone before

I knew she was right
I needed to know
If I could do more
I needed to go
Outside into light
Perhaps to arrive
Where once I had been
To come out alive
Not hide in between
Living and dying
She said to believe
It was worth trying

I needed to find
A sense of release
A sense that my mind
Could find its own peace
And by believing
This I would receive
The measure of grace
One finds achieving
A purpose a place
For better or worse
For good or for ill
In the universe

To do as I will

It is up to me
If I am to be

A Beautiful World Worth Dying For

Our descending world falls from bad to worse
Minds made up decided divided for
Two in a dualistic universe
Thesis antithesis squared off for war
Jihad Armageddon decline and fall
They hate we hate we all will kill us all

The moon and the sun still soar in the sky
But war has begun now and more will die
Each day as we pray supposedly to
The same God who kills me and blesses you

I never understood that never could
And now ripe for the kill I never will
But I thank God whoever he may be
My loved ones lost will not be here to see
What is to come now that it comes for me
And bid you good night as we lose the light

May we waken in a place without war
Nor forget how our sun and moon soared bright
Daily for all everywhere on this ball
Of a beautiful world worth dying for

World War III

When I was a child
We all lived in fear
Of the Soviets
Nuclear and wild
Everybody here
Felt doomed and all bets
Were off as to when
The war would begin

Now it has begun
A different war
Not that other one
We were waiting for
But which never came
Some things never change
As they stay the same
This life is so strange

I always knew that I would die
What changes is the reason why
