World War III

When I was a child
We all lived in fear
Of the Soviets
Nuclear and wild
Everybody here
Felt doomed and all bets
Were off as to when
The war would begin

Now it has begun
A different war
Not that other one
We were waiting for
But which never came
Some things never change
As they stay the same
This life is so strange

I always knew that I would die
What changes is the reason why

We Will Meet You in the Moonlight

Not very many maybe one or two
Are those who enjoy these poems I write
A couple of kind friends a select few
Who share with me this long and lonely night

They bare their hearts with me and I hope you
Will join us tonight by the full moon's light
Within which we and poetry agree
To dare in the moon's unblinking eyesight
By word and thought and spirit to dance free

Come out and play awhile and you will see
Why some of us are so devoted to
Wearing our heart on our sleeve and believe
That we might change the world for good someday

We have a lot to do and we need you
Though we might end up failing anyway
Still we believe the journey is the goal
Questing for meaning meeting heart and soul
We will meet you in the moonlight: tonight

People have hurt you as they desert you
Your tender heart feels hardened now my friend
But should you someday find your way to me
Then I would bring you home where sorrows end
That you might know the truth to make you free
So that your heart and eyes need never spend
Another night of loneliness and tears
For I would love you well and harrow hell
To lift that heart to feel those eyes to see
Beyond those hurts to hopes freed from those fears
Of love and loss which darken your young years

Today your heart feels closed and far away
But someday you will see what love can be
You bud to bloom again another day
My heart is true and I will wait for you
In my heart there is room for you to bloom
My heart will hear what your heart has to say
None can desert you there where none can hurt
Come home when you are ready come and stay
With me and find your home where sorrows end
My love my child my sister and my friend
Whenever you are ready: come to me

This Bronze Moon of July

The moon rose enormous tonight
And seemed newly born with its light
Aglint minted gold
Though timelessly old
The moon magic burned burnished bright

It rose shining more like the sun
Blazing bronze on the horizon
In brightening fire
An arc of desire
From brass to gold to platinum then gone

It was rarified
As it clarified
And then it moved on

But I will remember
This bronze moon of July
In bone-white December
To warm me as I die

Transcendental Sonnet #1409:

Some few still say of global warming: no such thing
But I can hear alarm bells sounding: ting-a-ling
And it is a hundred and two on my front porch
Somehow right now as I watch global warming scorch
My neighborhood with understood immediacy
I would say this theory feels like reality
To me but please I am not looking for a fight
With touchy and defensive people on the right

Yet right would seem a relative term in this case
I am no scientist though and I leave with grace
Taking cold showers and saving my flowers from
Present climate changes and as for those to come
Good thing for me I am so sensitive to cold
It looks like I will still be hot when I get old

In this land of milk and honey
When a beggar asks for money
And they always do
I give them a few
Dollars along with my blessing

And I do not mind confessing
That I have been there
Have been everywhere
Up down and sideways on the bum

So I never mind sharing some
And if I saw you
I would help you too
We hold on and do our dharma
As we ride the wheel of karma

And it turns so fast
And we cannot last
And all we have is each other
Who am I? I am your brother

In fact I am you
Indeed you are me
And the wheel turns true
Until we are free:
Dharma for karma

Adventure awaits us
And misadventure too
Daily life debates us
Challenging us to do
That which we cannot bear

That is unless we dare
To cross over borders
Transcending disorders
Defying our own past
To find the now at last

Adventure awaits us
And misadventure too
But destiny fates us
To do what we must do
To get from here to there

And where is there? To be
Within the now and free

Climbing steeply
Focused only
On my goal
Lest I fall

Feeling deeply
Thinking lonely
If at all
In my soul

Some people watch
From down below
But none can catch
Me should this go
Wrong this long
Deadly song

Up at the top
The winds are strong
With a sharp drop

And you ask me
Might you come too
As you task me
To remain true

I will
But still
The way is unknown

We all climb alone

Not yes not no
Nor maybe so
Not an answer
No suggestion
Just a question

And the dancer
Dancing unknown
However small
Is not alone
Part of the All

And together
Now not whether
When nor somehow
As karma turns
One candle burns

And the question
Is the answer
No suggestion
Let the dancer
Fall into All

Satori Sonnet

Contemplating the Gateless Gate
I enter the riddle of All
Transcending to a weightless state
I neither rise nor do I fall
See hear nor feel but am the Real
Surrounded by the summer sky

Depression has been digression

Now to embrace the butterfly
Now is the time when dreams come true
Now to enjoy and not destroy
For if I hurt myself I sin
Just as I would if I hurt you
Let a refreshing day begin

Open the gate and let life in

I wade into the world warily
As I close one eye and hold my nose
A victim of curiosity
I suppose but this is how it goes:

I get outside and outlast the past
Curiosity makes me go fast
When I know in my case to go slow
Would be to waste the rush of this haste
To experience the universe
As it expands with my consciousness

Richer or poorer better or worse
Joyfully fearfully more or less
Eagerly tearfully I confess
To get outside myself is to see
What I look like in reality
Free of space free of time free to be

Out of context in eternity
I will soar more and more I will soar
As though I have never lived before
All is now new just now me and you
To be and see our way to be free
Intimate in immediacy!

P. L. of Orange and the Shoebox of Hate

A long time ago in simpler days
Which now seem like May in December
There was this CB radio craze
You may be too young to remember
It was Citizens Band radio
And drivers all talked to each other
Of gossip and roads and when to slow
Down if the cops should be a bother

This started with truckers but then spread
To everybody else and it led
To odd situations now and then
For example I remember when
My mother would be watching TV
And when someone using a CB
Would pass the house it would interfere
With something she was trying to hear

Mom got upset about little things
So she wrote to "The Troubleshooter"
In a very well-written letter
In those days before the computer
Not expecting the trouble it brings
To go against what is popular
In a column in the newspaper
I just wish that she had known better

But my mother weighed in as "P. L.
Of Orange" and she really caught hell

Angry men thought she was a man too
And wrote in detail what they would do
To P. L. of Orange if they knew
Where she was just because she complained
The Troubleshooter writer explained
People were crazy he was lazy
And forwarded their letters to her
She kept them in a shoebox of hate

We never knew who those people were
But she is dead now and it is late

How the Best Get Better

So now you face alone
That schoolyard jealousy
Of the majority
At the first suggestion
Of nonconformity

With their only question
Who will cast the first stone?
The least talented will
Bluster forward to still
The voice of heresy

There is no argument
For stupidity
It is a compliment
Give the herd the word:
Go ahead stone me

Thank them for their scarlet letter
It is grace
By which now you break their fetter
In their face
This is how the best get better

Not the end my friend:
You just won the race

Under the Dog Star

Under the Dog Star how shining you are
As hearts soar on these hot high summer nights
The moon embracing brings us near from far
Rises surprises astounds and surrounds
Us with unnumbered unexpected sights

High summer opens to us like a rose
Full-blown without revealing what it knows

For it is left to us to navigate
This high summer night feeling as it grows
Enchanted by moonlight nourished by fate
Blooming on time never early nor late
And always now though we never know how

Under the Dog Star we howl to the sky
Consuming all that which fate will allow
Ourselves consumed but if this is to die
It is but death of death the hidden door
Of life and none could ever ask for more

As in the darkness we lie down to soar

A Somewhat Unusual Song

No more would I be shat upon
By crosspatch cranks be spat upon
With something like impunity

That simply will not do for me
Enough shenanigans and more
That is not what I came here for

But having said this I will say
I send my love to all today
Who have goodwill I bear no ill

I really want to be your friend

Should you be so kind as to lend
An open heart an open ear
And curiosity to hear
A somewhat unusual song:

I invite you to sing along

I Am Going to Win Somehow

Is it just me or do you see
A hope not seen for me before?

I do and dare to ask for more
Of life within the earthly span
Of this mere me this mortal man
As my desire makes manifest
Belief that all will turn out best
Will not be recalled as tragic
But as being kissed by magic

This life is going well for me
Despite those who would see me fail
Their impotence will not avail
Against the determination
Of one chosen for creation
Of beauty as duty as love
I take my orders from above

I am completely certain now:
I am going to win somehow

Before the Tide of Time Bears Me Away

I wish I had more money and more time
So I could give away a thousand books
And I wish I were funny in my rhyme
Each time to bring a thousand faces looks
Of delight to bring light into this gloom
Which hangs like stale smoke in a dark barroom

It would be so nice to brighten things up
To read my poems entertainingly
On the street corner and have a tin cup
So passersby could leave quarters for me
I find I cannot always be funny
Just as the sky is not always sunny

But I know I would if only I could
Prevented as I am as you can see
As black and white give way to shades of grey
For me as for you some bad and some good
Some laughter and some tears in my brief day
Before the tide of time bears me away

Still using such means as I have I strive
To make the most of my being alive
Life is good and I would be understood
As someone who tries to make it better
Embracing the spirit by the letter
Fighting the bad while embracing the good
Every day in shades of grey I would be
The best I can be one man being free

Candle of Our Hope

Enough of all the crass vulgarity
Of those who care for war more than the poor
Unworthy is their harsh hegemony
Of you and me and in the end they bore

They huff and puff and seek to frighten us
Are darkest when they would enlighten us
But they are only sadly misused tools
Enslaved without their knowledge by the fools
Who own and operate the world today

If we think independently we are
Thought blasphemous subversive and bizarre
They wish they could just make us go away
But this is our land too where we were born

So why will they not allow us to warn
That something is wrong in the USA?

I am a cat with claws and I strike back
When cowards lie in wait to then attack
When I am weak as they sneak up on me
I leave to the justice of destiny
Their judgment but we will be free someday

Yet even in this darkness I see light
The candle of our hope flickers somehow
That here among the wrong one thing is right
No yesterday tomorrow only now:

This love which you and I share here tonight

Your Lock On My Liberty

Just who in the hell
Are you
To presume to tell
Me what to and not
To do?

I think you forgot
Just who
I am and you are
You brought on this war
And I ask "what for?"

As we watch your star
I hear destiny
For both you and me

They say you are great
I say you are not
I leave you to fate
Where hypocrites rot

You speak of free speech
As my freedoms die
But stick like a leech
Because I ask "why?"

Just go away now
Back under your rock
As I fight somehow
To destroy your lock
On my liberty:

Get away from me

Transcendental Sonnet #1408:
I Too Am an American

Do you think if you threaten me
Then frightened I will speak no more?
It should not be that easy for
Mongers of fear who will not hear

Though I am small though I am poor
I am not squelched so easily
By you and your gospel of fear
Nor anyone under the sun

You think I am under your gun?
No! I will speak as I see fit
And finish what I have begun
I suggest you get used to it

Save your threats intolerant man:
I too am an American

I Triumph Today

Between womb and tomb
Does the world eat us
And then excrete us
Within a locked room
Where each is alone
With each to his own
And only the gloom
Such light might provide
As leaks from outside?

Between womb and tomb
That is how it seems
When we lose our dreams
And sorrows subsume
The hope we once knew
When skies which burned blue
Have charred to dull black
When we lose our way
And night steals the day

Now I steal it back
To live free by choice
I have found my voice
And now I will speak
It is not too late
To struggle with fate
No more being weak
By strength I rejoice:
I triumph today

When conservatives speak of uniting
They mean we should unite their way
Keep still and march in lockstep reciting
Whatever they tell us to pray

If they can't legislate morality
All at once they still never stop
Their march to absolute hegemony

As Supreme Court justices drop

With blinders on they see themselves climbing
And they think they are near the top
In the distance I hear midnight chiming

I can see the barren valley
By the bone-white light of a knowing moon
Leading back to the back-alley
Where all of us will be united soon

All Roads Lead to Rome

The republic yields to Republicans
A four-year-renewable emperor
As strong as those ancient ones ever were
The winners the sinners and publicans

Watch what you say they don't need a reason
To whisk away those who would annoy them
Down Gitmo way they say they destroy them
Hang on like a flea to your liberty

You'd better pray they don't call it treason
Have a nice day just smile and enjoy them
They can be funny spending your money

That is to say the money you do not
And never will have because they forgot
It belongs to you but what can you do?

"Not in my name" was the name of the game
But not anymore they say this means war
And take down your name as someone to blame

That which we hold dear is worth fighting for
Gitmo or get less all roads lead to Rome
Divided we stand but stand for our home

No One No More

I feel myself fading slipping away
Perhaps it will not be necessary
After all as I thought after the fall
For me to commit suicide someday
As gradually I slip out of me

The restraint which has kept me here this long
The question of my culpability
My blood on my own hands becomes less strong
As I do and begins to fade with me

On dreadful websites whenever I say
Anything about not wanting to live
The judgmental mockingbirds come chirping
"Just die! Go ahead! You ought to be dead!"

Blindly anonymously usurping
Nature and nurture nor will they forgive
Me their misperception that I am gay
Would that I were had never known her nor
The others I once thought I would die for

Forget me I just need to get away
And die only for me: no one no more

We Will Get Through This Somehow

Late the hour and great the power
Our world is filled with madness
But let us refuse to let
Our hearts fail now for sadness
Nor let us have one regret
We have done the best we could
And we are not finished yet
We will do the best we can
Grim the struggle understood
But the best is still to be

Stark the power and dark the hour
Solidarity my friends
All for one and to a man
Me for you and you for me
As we grapple toward the good
Mind the means and eye the ends
Reach relentless toward the light
Rising to the challenge now
Roll your sleeves up hold on tight
Side by side through this long night

We will get through this somehow
