Fall Has Fallen On Me

Having slept all day I woke up at five
Reluctantly at first but later was
Grateful to find myself here still alive

I first noticed that things had changed because
Of the late light glowing through my window
Orange and violet speaking of change
A rumbling expectant feeling that strange
Events were in store above and below
The sky was spectacular everywhere

Then I turned around and saw a rainbow
The like of which I never saw before
Filling the sky so broad so deep so high
That I have never seen anything more
Incredible less plausible yet there
It was and then it faded then was gone

But left its after-image as came on
From all sides all at once lightning flashing
And violent thunder booming crashing
Followed on this eve of the dawning fall
By the sweet scent of unfamiliar rain
After dry months the most welcome of all

Then except for flashing now and again
Of lightning as thunder drummed its refrain
It was night all at once but still the moon
Full and white and brilliant soared above it
All as the fall stormed in without warning
And so it will remain until morning

Fall has fallen on me and I love it
Alone with the moon in the afternoon
Of the year just where I want to be: here

Come Sweet Night

Salmon pink with cotton balls
Lightly scattered on the walls
Of the early autumn sky
As the day is drifting by
To allow the evening in
Soon the magic will begin

Come sweet night and sing to me
Silent songs of mystery
Show me stories in the stars
Radiant Venus ruddy Mars
As tonight the harvest moon
Rises as I fall to swoon

Bathe me in celestial light
Warm sweet early autumn night
That your silent sanctity
Sanctify my love and me
We are parted near and far
But together where you are

Lance at Leisure: Sunday Seizure

I have drained all the books which I have read
Emptying what they said into my head
Where all stands stacked and neatly filed away
In readiness for reference someday

But standing in my bathroom this morning
Addressing the porcelain in the thou
Fainting falling backward without warning
I found myself in the cat-box somehow

When the light returned the eternal now
At leisure from an apparent seizure
The glasses I wore were on me no more
But somewhere else entirely on the floor

Once I woke in the emergency room
Lying at attention in suspension
But after this morning's miniature doom
A cat-box instead of a triage bed

I have gone from degraded and confused
To blithely bemused absurdly amused
The day got off to a rollicking start
I give myself to life with all my heart

We think we are so smart and then we find
Though we may be we all are flying blind
You could end up in a cat-box like me
Drained back into books for eternity

Harvest Moon in Pisces

These eyes have seen so many full moons rise
Yet each and every one a sweet surprise
And a harvest moon like a gold balloon
Is the best of all in the early fall

Which as she rises clarifies bone-white
An incandescent lightbulb in the night
Transfiguring to fullness from the new
Reminding of the ripening of you

Climbing the sky floating freer lighter
Lotus of light blooming higher brighter
Though a friendly face to earthbound creatures
Inscrutably haunting are her features

She neither smiles nor frowns but watches waits
Reflects on us reflecting on our fates
Then when the night has ended all too soon
She wanes to wax another rising moon

And I will be surprised again though I
Dream of her shining advent in the sky
Her face yours and mine three as one alone
The moon is love: close distant known unknown

Fast Bus

Trapped on a fast bus no one drives
And it never stops
We dare not ask when it arrives

The other shoe drops
When we get there but where will we
Find ourselves and where will we be?

Our fast bus goes and no one knows
So there is no use wondering
As we speed past each blooming rose
But I can hear the thundering

Of the falling sky

The blind man was healed with spittle and clay
He drove a fast bus but he lost his way
Asleep at the wheel he went blind today

Never ask him why
If you startle him and wake him
You will make him cry

It went to his head
Let sleeping dogs lie
Blessed are the dead
Let the liar die

And what about the rest of us?

No way to go but this bus we are on
So we ride blind on our fast bus
No one knows where it goes till it is gone

Jolly Jess Donovan Son of the Sea

sacred to the memory of a sailor

Should there be a short in a wire
Or I find a screw in my tire
I have no one to call upon
Because Jess Donovan is gone

Years ago if we had a mess
My mother would say "go get Jess"
And he lived right across the street
An old sailor light on his feet

When I set the kitchen on fire
The first thing I did was call Jess
Though he alone I should have known
Needed a little help I guess
The firemen came I felt such shame
Jess laughed said no one was to blame

He had no children had no spouse
Had just his mother in the house
Jess Donovan was on the ball
He was the go-to-guy to call
He fixed the wires he patched the tires
He raised hell and did all things well

Jolly Jess Donovan son of the sea
Friend to my mother big brother to me

Turn Back the Clock to a Midnight Knock

Beasts are rutting the nutters are nutting
And all is OK in the USA
The beasts are not invited to the feasts
But we would never fit in anyway

Seems the gloom and doomers are late bloomers
But they have broken out the sunshine now
Guess they read the polls and heard the rumors
About their fearless leader / sacred cow

A short attention-span for common pain
And bitterness is too hot for TV
So we love one another once again
The USA must U-N-I-T-E

Just do it their way or hit the highway
We did that but I wonder if they know
Upbeat and sunny heartwarming funny
The main thing is to get on with the show

Does anything still matter? I guess so
Uplifting money gutwrenching honey
The natter and the patter do-si-do
Pledge allegiance now and have a good time

You dance a jig while I make up a rhyme
And we will leave them laughing when we go

Love in Autumn:
Auferstanden aus Ruinen

No more politics no more arguing
No more angry people wasting my time
No not now when sweet autumn breezes bring
Echoes of Eden shades of the sublime
I am a lover as love brought me here
To turn at this turning time of the year

Oh I will still vote but it never counts
Why do I bother with it anyway?
The forgotten die the body count mounts
I find love the only meaning today
Where love and charity abide is God
To remember to scour the stain away

These people have gone mad yet find us odd
To care is to get out of there but stay
I tried to talk to hotheads for awhile
They never hear a single word I say
And they are cruel even when they smile
The bitter and frustrated are in hell

From now on sweet girl only you and me
The two of us alone with destiny
The lovers are in heaven: all is well

Taking "Yes" for an Answer

It seems my dream is coming true
Now what in the world do I do?

I have barely been existing
Merely waiting just subsisting
Yet now find myself resisting
Eminent emancipation
Feeling overwhelmed and dizzy
Discombobulated busy
With heady anticipation

As finally the rust of tears
Falls to reveal excited fears
Standing staring fate in her face
Steadying nervous hands on hips
To feel yes I have won the race
A scared smile trembles on my lips
To grasp the gift of life by grace

What do you do when your dream comes true?
I look to the sky and say "thank you"

Autumn Dreams

The shadows of advancing autumn night
Are tinted like the leaves they blow away
Crimson amber copper in the half-light
Delight my eyes as night descends on day

Tears in the rain and kisses on the breeze
Autumn is made up of moments like these
Softly advancing on me and on you
Dreams in the air are caressing us now

My darling may your autumn dreams come true
And may I be a part of them ...somehow

To Be Begun Again With You

I want to brush your hair and polish you
The way I really ought to wax my car
But it is nineteen feet long and you are
Just five feet and are so much warmer too

My car is forty so much older than
Your young years an age closer to this man
Who remembers it when he was a boy
When it was Grandpa's car his pride and joy
As it has lasted even so have I
Old Chryslers and old poets never die

The world keeps turning we keep turning too
As leaves in autumn sunflowers to sun
We die at dusk for life to be begun
Again at dawn arisen and anew

I want to be begun again with you

Walkers Talkers You and Me

Misty-moisty morning walk
Bundled up against a chill
Which though some cannot I feel
Ravens scold and parrots squawk
In my heart I shake and thrill
To realize I am real

Sunset-spangled evening talk
The chill has been chased away
By the sweet propinquity
Of my sweet and tender one
Who brought back the sun today
And who shared it selflessly

Day is over night begun
Ravens scold and parrots squawk
In our hearts we smile to be
Joined on this warm evening walk

Two shy faces smile to see
Our world turn around again
All its folly joy and pain
Focus into ecstasy

Walkers talkers you and me

Moonrise

I know tonight is going to be good
Since already in early afternoon
I see the moon over my neighborhood
Of course one never knows about the moon
It beams whenever it feels like beaming
Even in afternoon sun and seeming
The free spirit which we know it to be

Sweet girl it makes me dream of you today
It shines up there like you so far away
But I can feel it shine for you and me
When you look up can you see it there too?
It is a sign in the sky to tell you
And a sign to tell me of destiny
Tonight the moon belongs to us alone

Sweet girl ring me up on the telephone
And tell me you will come to me tonight
Or if it would be better I will drive
All night and day if need be by that light
Which shines to show us we are still alive
Sweet girl I would like to make love to you
Our sky falls dark but our moon rises bright

Transcendental Sonnet #1419:
Tonight?

Believe in destiny
It is never too late
To be surprised by fate
Sweet girl believe in me

For two can still be one
Calling birds are flying
Friendly beasts are lying
Together in the sun

The world is still turning
Life goes on as ever
Revolving forever
The question is burning

Are you lonely tonight?
Come let me make it right

Transcendental Sonnet #1418:
Embrace Everlasting

Beckoning fair one! What are you made of?
Spun of the blue-white thread of the moonlight?
What is this I feel? Is it fear or love
Which draws me to your reaching arms tonight?
Whatever it is I cannot resist
Your mesmerizing call within the mist

Beckoning fair one! Embrace me if you
Are more than shadow if those silken arms
Have substance if you are a creature too
As I am that I might taste of those charms
Of satin and gossamer cloud and lace
And let me lose myself within your breast!

I sought and now at last have found the best
I see the very moonlight in your face

Transcendental Sonnet #1417:
L. A. Answers al-Qaida

In my magic town where dreams are born and deals are made
Here where most of us are in the industry somehow
We are a little busy for terrorists right now
In my City of the Angels we are not afraid

You suicide bombers with hidden agendas should
Be careful on the freeway and in the neighborhood
Because we are a lot tougher than you think we are
God help you if you cut us off in your rental car

The Hollywood Freeway is a power-play parade
Utterly inscrutable to such out-of-towners
As are unable to go with the hustle and flow
Fail to find the Zen and insist on being downers

Sorry we just have no time to be blown up today
Not ready for your close-up so get out of the way

The Simplest Thing of All

I want no more of negativity
Life cannot bless those who merely obsess
From now on it is only hope for me
Whatever I do or do not possess
Hope is free and I can still afford it

The train of thought which leads to gloom and doom
Can pass right by without me aboard it
And anyway there is no longer room
Since everyone else is on it but me

I will not settle for a destiny
Of fear and darkness narrowness and war
Hatched in the brains of idiots today
We deserve better! Why not demand more?
And I daresay I know a better way:

Before and behind beneath and above
The simplest thing of all which we call "Love"

Transcendental Sonnet #1416:
Sweet Girl I Promise We Will Be OK

Listening to Dylan dreaming of you
My sons came and visited me today
I believe in some things as just plain true
Like hope and faith and love and being kind
Even when the world seems out of its mind
My ears are wide open to what you say

And more importantly my heart is too

I have some good strong coffee in my hand
My daughter will visit me on Tuesday
All three of my kids and you understand
Every crazy thing I say come what may
We listen to each other we are one
Believing in life liberty and fun

Sweet girl I promise we will be OK

Let Hope Be Sparked

thoughts on a 9/11 four years later

Maybe they never read Lincoln's speeches
Perhaps they have forgotten Kennedy
I guess they are too young for Roosevelt
But those who rule today seem like leeches
Draining America from you and me

Does anyone remember how it felt
To know the deep goodness of this country
And to be truly proud of our leaders?

When did we settle for bottom-feeders?
We apologize as we realize
Our embarrassment with our president

Do you think about this? Do you doubt this?

Something has changed and not for the better
Killing the spirit shouting the letter
I believe in America: do you?

We can do better we can and we must
Let our sweet American dream come true
E pluribus unum: in God we trust
From many can one future be begun
As God above is love so let love be

Let hope be sparked to kindle you and me

Lady Luna

Because I have kissed it
Because it has kissed me
I cannot resist it
And this it is a she

Lady Luna the moon
Is calling me tonight
I feel her kiss and soon
She will love me in light

The best part of my days
Comes at the end my friend
Once again as always
My Lady Luna's love
Will drive me mad again
Will lift me up above
This cruel day of pain

My Lady! Come for me!
Lift me to ecstasy!

Transcendental Sonnet #1415:
Night Flight

My first three books all might as well be thrown in the sea
Written as they were for one who cares nothing for me
It hurts now to read of the love I poured inside them
I was once so proud of them but now sadly hide them

The last time I talked to her she had them in a box
In the attic with the artifacts like broken clocks
It took the best tattoo artists here from miles around
Working hours and hours on my arm to get her name drowned
To make her star fall in terrible beautiful flame
And to leave a black hole where no one can see that name

Some seeing now ask me "Were you shot down?" Yes I was
But no one ever flew higher than I did because
I have a devoted imagination you see
And for a thousand nights I imagined she loved me

Why

From a cold and still and dark and silent place I seek
As though from a premature grave as it were to speak
Those things which are in the end unspeakable yet I
Whether through folly or stubbornness seem doomed to try
Bearing a burden of a peculiar urgency
To share with you the dreams and visions inside of me

I have made some mistakes along the way you might say
Wrote a thousand sonnets for a girl who did not care
Gave my all and uttermost to someone never there
Beautiful dreams burned to ashes by the light of day
Looking back now I see it was all an illusion
Alone among these ruins now with my confusion

I wonder if anything really means anything

In and out my lungs keep breathing my heart keeps beating
Apparently I have not yet run my course of days
And the sentence continues more of this mortal span
They tell me my consciousness might continue always
In that case please remember me as an honest man
Who sincerely did his best and please forget the rest

So ultimately what do I want and hope to be?
To be a good poet so you will be proud of me

I grew up under the shadow of an abuser.
I cannot forget nor will life let me;
he is here and there and everywhere,
wearing different faces different places.

Inspiration in Reverse

You are an inspiration in reverse
As you do the wrong thing at the right time
Make me bloom better as you wizen worse
Grist for a counterintuitive mill
Train-wreck careenings refracted to rhyme

Your freefall continues and so I will
Never lack negative inspiration
A cautionary tale as one might say
An embodiment and evocation
Of how bitterness eats the soul away

With your example of what not to do
Seen in a spotlight as you fall apart
I wince at your pain as you fail again
Here in the audience mind my own heart
And pray God I never end up like you

As with a shudder I pull the rudder
Away from the scene of the accident
I leave you to rant in your stinking stew
You inspired me whatever your intent

You thought if you made a big enough noise
If you could prove yourself a bully too
Then they would let you play with the big boys
But too late: here comes fate to bully you

May God have mercy on what is left of
You and those who will now be bereft of
You who doubtless wish you had not left love
Back there behind out of sight out of mind

You are an inspiration in reverse
Make me bloom better as you wizen worse

Red Apple

This seems a good day in which not to talk
A day in which to rise above the noise
One in which to think to wonder to walk
To ruminate to celebrate small joys
Of solitude in quiet gratitude
Reflecting clearly free of attitude

An inventory day of taking stock
People argue nature acts: just the facts
While armchair quarterbacks grope and grapple
While irrelevant idiots natter

I am going to eat a red apple

What those talking heads say does not matter
Nor are their minds functional anyway
All I would say on this beautiful day
Is they should struggle less and snuggle more
I wonder if they know what life is for
It is to be enjoyed and not destroyed

Lighten up shut up get on with it go
Our life will be over before we know

September Song

In the misty-moisty morning shady
Hours before the sun breaks through
My thoughts my dreams are of one sweet lady
Fantasies of loving you

The first leaves turning on the maple tree
Here on my quiet old street
Remind me how much I wish I could be
Wrapped within your hair so sweet

Here or there where you are or wherever
Our hearts could ever soar to
Just to be with you and there forever
To cherish to adore you

The world grows smaller every day
Someday soon we will be together
And you are not so far away
Especially in autumn weather

When the wind whispers soft above you
Listen and hear it sigh "I love you"
