They said I was no one nowhere
They forgot about answered prayer

But now it looks like I might be
Able to write my poetry
With skill at will experience
Having made all the difference
For the better by the letter
The help of God some stubbornness
And years of sweat: no more no less

I have to write it anyway
But now it seems that judgment day
Regarding poetry and me
Might go a little better than
Once thought for this mere misfit man

To laugh last really is the best
Thank God and never mind the rest
I seem to have "arrived" somewhere
I think I might have gotten "there"
I guess if you write thousands of
Poems and give them all your love
In the end it might turn out right

A spark before I lose the light
And silent slip into the night

Make the Most of It

We come we go before we know
And we hardly have a chance to
Turn around as sunflowers grow
Toward the light as we advance to
The coming come-what-may each day
And the tune which we must dance to

We rush yet let us not forget
To see the sights along the way
Hurry yet need not let worry
Prevent us from being lovers
Of love itself of each other
Every sister every brother

(As the angel of death hovers)

Impatient fate will never wait
Yet let us make the most of it
To our mutual benefit
Loving dearly seeing clearly
That though life can feel so very
Real: it is just temporary

Heavy Freight Train

Heavy freight train coming through
From across the continent
In your song I lie content
All alone tonight with you

Coming through my lonesome town
Full of shattered dreams and pain
Sing your sweet old blues again
With us all as we fall down

Heavy freight train shine your light
For the broken for the blind
Sing with those who weep tonight
Solidarity in kind

Other trains in other lands
Sing their brighter songs by day
My old freight train understands
Always night and far away

Here where lonely poets roam
Lost and always far from home

Old as Forever the Eye of a Child

No one can stop the wind nor silence me
We travel together ragged and wild
My fellow wanderer and I are free
Singing and bringing a new point of view
Old as forever the eye of a child

Can you hear us? We come singing for you

Some say I am fifty some say fifteen
No one understands me nor do I care
I know who I am I know what I mean
I am a rambler between here and there
Looks like a good time for a change of scene

You think you understand but you do not

Now nothing really matters anymore
You might have known it once but you forgot
Who the poets are and what they sing for
You used to be a poet but you lost
Your soul somehow: I wonder what it cost

Your ears just cannot listen anymore

Once it is gone then it is gone for good
The pencils have no erasers in hell
Did you do any good? You sure did well
You talk among yourselves are understood
I cannot afford what you have to sell

What I say is blown on the wind away

I am a wanderer who sings for free
No one can stop the wind nor silence me
We travel together ragged and wild
And you would rather not hear what we say
Old as forever the eye of a child

Two for the Road

Breath of the desert breathing in the fall
Under an enigmatic crescent moon
Ushering autumn sweeping in the dawn
Singing to me in the turning-leaf tree
Maybe hope blows in the wind after all
Riding in on the desert dawn wind soon

Once I had a love but now she is gone
Dried away with summer gone with the night

Breath of the desert you can make things right
She went away but you bring a new day
Even if I am forever alone
The road is worth walking though I know not
Where I am going nor where I am blown
Bring up the sun now and make it shine hot

Once someone loved me but then she forgot
The wind the only constant I have known

Breath of the desert fellow wanderer
We are two for the road: we always were

Together Under the Sky

I like to meet people and look them in the eye
Our hands touch our souls touch and we feel we are real
In that moment of encounter we both reveal
We are meant to stick together under the sky
As we wander together here wondering: why?

Notice how we seek each other and you will find
The answer between us in the question we ask
Without one another we are deaf dumb and blind
We need to be together and this is our task
To listen to touch not worry so much just be

Together touch by touch all of us you and me
And only the lonely will know what I mean but
The lonely is everybody no matter what
When we come together is when we become free
To listen to touch not worry so much just be

We are meant to stick together under the sky
I would like to meet you and look you in the eye

Sleep pauses my life to keep me alive
A little death to keep great death at bay
Deep well where I drink deep think deep and thrive
My necessary nourishment each day
By which I dream ideas to poetry
Through dreaming heaven comes on earth to me

No news is good news now so I refuse
To wake up to take up the tidings now
The rude intrude but I exclude them use
The time to heal when dreams are real somehow
To grow to know and then to show them all
What I see in dreams sleeping through the fall

I hunker in the bunker of the moon
And see more clear than those who lie awake
The fall is falling hard now it will shake
Their narrow nightmare nation hard and soon
In my night visions I see dark and deep
That we are most free to be when asleep

When I wake up and make a cup of tea
Breathe the scented steam and recall my dream
Sleep sifts the grain from chaff and poetry
Is born from when I silent lay as dead
Its voice is my own as it sings through me
Some shout of war I sing of peace instead

Some shout of hate but I will sing of love
Whether or not it is granted to me
To know it myself at least I know of
All the sweet pleasures love brings to this life
I once had a lover once had a wife
My heart still beats: my best is yet to be

What are we here for? To make love not war
Why have we been given heartbeat and breath?
To live to love to bring life not bring death
Is peace some folly of the innocent?
If peace is trespass I do not repent
As nightmares come true I will dream for you

The same skull grins
Beneath all skins

Struggling for meaning searching the keening
Of an obese culture starving to death
With an obscene vulture sucking its breath

Seeing my surroundings falling slowly
I catch on my tongue one pure and holy
Snowflake in the middle of the burning

I can feel my heart my soul returning
The hour is late I find myself in Rome
An empire falls as I rise: going home

The same skull grins beneath all skins
The same Christ died and rose for sins
Before behind and after all

A snowflake in the burning fall

Transcendental Sonnet #1422:
Suddenly as in Dreams

Carissima mia

I know an angel-girl whose face is on my mind
And now her wings unfold within my heart
The sight of her so bright it nearly makes me blind

This is the way those happy endings start
Which people wish for all their lonely lives so long
And my wish tonight is simple and strong:

Angel-girl I would like to be with you tonight
I need some help remembering the moon

But if you would come shining in its blue-white light
I think all my wrong things would turn out right
I know the words I just forgot the tune

Suddenly as in dreams surprising me without warning
Come shine your light on me and very soon
Even though black night seems endless bright will dawn the morning

Transcendental Sonnet #1421:
Maybe Baby

I come from a line of violent crime
A whiff of menace in the air
I pet my purring cat and write my rhyme
But I always remember where
I come from and who I am after all
My father was a hitman cool and tall

We made good money in Prohibition
The house always wins the roulette wheel spins
Even now during this Inquisition
Which is the reign of George the Second here
Another family founded on fear
But they were never cool: and now this fool

All I want to do is write poetry
But maybe baby best not mess with me

Transcendental Sonnet #1420:
Young at Any Age

I have punctured egomaniacs
Spun some hard-right wackos on their backs
And mostly enjoyed the to and fro

But the more I know the less I know
The less some know the less this is so
They know it all and they always will

These are the people who make me ill
And why I hang out with kids these days
Since they are not so set in their ways

Those who are young have an open mind
Young at any age they leave behind
The stupidities which enslave these
Prematurely ossified lost souls
Who preach doom and gloom from their black holes

To Open the Door

A universe
Is one size too small
Living the law to the letter

A multiverse
With spaces for all
Of infinity is better

Time inorganically chopped into bits
Gives nervous moderns those postmodern shits
Fraying time's fabric until no space fits
Food for thought their theses into feces

Defending the indefensible
Uninformed by multiplicity
Is in itself reprehensible
Amoral moral duplicity

A mind which only looks behind
Is blind unkind insensible
Do we dare could we care for more?

What do we have to lose should we choose
Multiversity? We have done worse

The lotus opens to the kind
I hear the knock which breaks the lock
What are we here for?

To open the door

Running in Place

Written without contraction
With the whole heart
Abstraction as reaction
Such is the art
Of a misfit motley man
Groping for grace

Growing as fast as one can
Running in place
Trying to outrun the past
And that one face
Of both love and hate at last
Running out of time and space

Embracing absurdity
With conviction
By action of redaction
Undistracted I would be
If only in refraction

A poet as poetry

No Nevermind at All

Often worse but sometimes better
I never know which way the wind will blow
As in spirit so in letter
I am the moodiest person I know

Yet if I go outside and take a ride
And ladies smile at me and like my car
Remember who I am and put aside
My enemies remember who they are
And think of how free it is to be me
I quickly recover my sanity

To hell with those whose hearts are cramped and small
As in spirit so in letter
I need pay them no nevermind at all
This old boy is feeling better

Those cramped and small hearts better stay away:
I take my rightful place again today

I never felt this patriotic till
These patriots took my country from me
I fear that they will never give it back

I know now what I lost I feel the chill
Of emptiness where my home used to be
They stole its heart and broke it in Iraq

And if I try to talk to them they yell
They tell me to shut up and go to hell
(When they speak of hell I wonder if I
Am already there now before I die)

They say that only they know what is best
And for me to just stick to poetry
Just write my books and they will do the rest

But they remind me to watch what I say
That liberty has limits as I see
That freedom is no longer free today

Then they remind me: they are watching me

Remember Light

I watch now as my country is destroyed
Grateful for the gifts of grace I enjoyed
Remembering life and love I knew here
Astonished by my love for you my dear

My darling now as we go into night
Remember how it was: remember light

You know I was nocturnal anyway
Night time was always my best time of day
But things are not so simple anymore
We lost the battle now we lose the war

Oligarchy of Inadequacy

An oligarchy of inadequacy
Is draining democracy from you and me
Did fear contribute to these darkened days?
Were voters really that afraid of gays?
Some thought it was God's will but maybe not

Some thought they remembered but they forgot
If they ever learned what these scars we earned
Really mean so they demean what they see
As challenging what they think they believe
They wish we would just shut up or else leave

Yet that which is best for us for them worst
Is that we who disagree were here first
A family known as Humanity
Bound by family honor to disagree
With an oligarchy of inadequacy

We ride an impatient world spinning very fast
It has a very short attention span
Only human dignity and kindness will last
With dignity let us be as kind as we can

A great many questions and the questions are great
Changing times are challenging and the hour grows late

Bend or Break

That chill which you feel in your bones is real
This is not just another autumn now
An unknown door blows open to reveal
An answer to an unasked question: how
Is the unimaginable to be?

We could never bring ourselves to allow
What waited out there knocking at the door
To enter our mind but put it behind
Us out of our thought and now we are brought
To that moment all those nightmares were for

We were trying to deal with it in dreams
And though we always woke up now it seems
That this is not a nightmare anymore
Some weep to find out we are not asleep
But take heart it is time to be awake

The storm is coming: either bend or break

Kindness at the Fall

When everyone has gone out of their mind
Society has lost civility
All that is left to us is to be kind
That we not be part of the cruelty

When everyone else has gone dumb and blind
Let us have civil tongues clear eyes to see
Let us be human let us be humane
And rising above the brutality
Of the age vow never to inflict pain

Let kindness begin with you and with me

When everyone else thinks only of gain
Instead let us share with those who know loss
Though we have little some have none at all
Turning aside from the dust and the dross
Of overripe decadence doomed to fall

The fall is coming: let us not fall too
I want to struggle toward the light with you

Equinox Eve

for Lori

Now after that yesternight rarity
Of rainbow thunder lightning chased away
The shards of summertime a clarity
Has dawned blue lucid still on me today

Not one leaf moves in the autumn-dawn sky

This blue bowl of silence under which I
Am forced to contemplate to wait as fate
Prepares for dark and light to calibrate
In equipoise to balance night and day

I believe in love today the eve of
Autumnal Equinox so come what may
They say this is the calm before the storm
That this is how the hurricane begins

I have something hurricanes cannot harm
I know a secret: he who loves most wins

The Sky Itself

Now I see the sky a silken ceiling
Of delicate decadent drapery
This morning a soft sensuous feeling
Comes through my eyes goes to the heart of me
Challenging me to hold my head up high
But doing it coyly caressingly

I never want to miss another sky
Like this one I would kiss one every day

How wasteful to look down and throw away
Such indescribable treasures to be
Given away daily offered for free!

From this morning forward I vow that I
Will shed the blindness which has blinded me
And no longer fail to notice the sky

For the sky itself has reminded me

Fall Has Fallen On Me

Having slept all day I woke up at five
Reluctantly at first but later was
Grateful to find myself here still alive

I first noticed that things had changed because
Of the late light glowing through my window
Orange and violet speaking of change
A rumbling expectant feeling that strange
Events were in store above and below
The sky was spectacular everywhere

Then I turned around and saw a rainbow
The like of which I never saw before
Filling the sky so broad so deep so high
That I have never seen anything more
Incredible less plausible yet there
It was and then it faded then was gone

But left its after-image as came on
From all sides all at once lightning flashing
And violent thunder booming crashing
Followed on this eve of the dawning fall
By the sweet scent of unfamiliar rain
After dry months the most welcome of all

Then except for flashing now and again
Of lightning as thunder drummed its refrain
It was night all at once but still the moon
Full and white and brilliant soared above it
All as the fall stormed in without warning
And so it will remain until morning

Fall has fallen on me and I love it
Alone with the moon in the afternoon
Of the year just where I want to be: here

Come Sweet Night

Salmon pink with cotton balls
Lightly scattered on the walls
Of the early autumn sky
As the day is drifting by
To allow the evening in
Soon the magic will begin

Come sweet night and sing to me
Silent songs of mystery
Show me stories in the stars
Radiant Venus ruddy Mars
As tonight the harvest moon
Rises as I fall to swoon

Bathe me in celestial light
Warm sweet early autumn night
That your silent sanctity
Sanctify my love and me
We are parted near and far
But together where you are

Lance at Leisure: Sunday Seizure

I have drained all the books which I have read
Emptying what they said into my head
Where all stands stacked and neatly filed away
In readiness for reference someday

But standing in my bathroom this morning
Addressing the porcelain in the thou
Fainting falling backward without warning
I found myself in the cat-box somehow

When the light returned the eternal now
At leisure from an apparent seizure
The glasses I wore were on me no more
But somewhere else entirely on the floor

Once I woke in the emergency room
Lying at attention in suspension
But after this morning's miniature doom
A cat-box instead of a triage bed

I have gone from degraded and confused
To blithely bemused absurdly amused
The day got off to a rollicking start
I give myself to life with all my heart

We think we are so smart and then we find
Though we may be we all are flying blind
You could end up in a cat-box like me
Drained back into books for eternity

Harvest Moon in Pisces

These eyes have seen so many full moons rise
Yet each and every one a sweet surprise
And a harvest moon like a gold balloon
Is the best of all in the early fall

Which as she rises clarifies bone-white
An incandescent lightbulb in the night
Transfiguring to fullness from the new
Reminding of the ripening of you

Climbing the sky floating freer lighter
Lotus of light blooming higher brighter
Though a friendly face to earthbound creatures
Inscrutably haunting are her features

She neither smiles nor frowns but watches waits
Reflects on us reflecting on our fates
Then when the night has ended all too soon
She wanes to wax another rising moon

And I will be surprised again though I
Dream of her shining advent in the sky
Her face yours and mine three as one alone
The moon is love: close distant known unknown
