Inside

I used to be brittle before I broke
I used to argue with you and doubt you
I finally got the fire with the smoke
Taken to task by mistaken belief
On my part that I could live without you
I failed to see it coming but it was
The bonfire of my vanities to burn
Away my chaff and something like relief
Simply to laugh at myself and to learn

A hard landing but an awakening
Of what was always there inside of me
Important enough for the risk because
Of the secret only the fire could bring
To light by burning and yet not consume
The essence within now burnished now free
Liberated as a burnt offering
Made free by the fire which burned the long night
Reborn by eclipse into morning bright

A flame to unfold like the lotus and
A flame to burn not for heat but for light
Inside of me by which I understand
That this is important that I must be
So important hard things had to be done
When hard things done the hard way turned out right
Whatever it took to get me to see
People have purposes and I have one
Inside of me inside this poetry

So it Does

So if it matters then it does
And if it does not then so what
It does not matter if I do not mind
A dream I had but then forgot

If it is like it never was
It only matters if I mind
And I do not

What matters to my mind is other minds
Especially those still open to know
Before before becomes behind
Which cannot be prevented but who try
That this is always a good time to grow
And get to know our humankind

Whatever matters objectively
If there is such a thing
We know what matters to you and me
Better than anything
We mind what matters to us you and I

So one who said he does not finds
The one who matters is the one who minds
Who feared being disappointed before
But now what matters matters more

We need each other it turns out to be
And need to know that we are not alone
That we matter to minds beyond our own
That human solidarity
Is what you need as much as me

So if it matters then it does
And if it does not then so what
And we will love us just because
We matter whether it matters or not
Remembering a dream we had but then forgot

And it is like it always was
It only matters if we mind
Matters of us me and you
So it does because we do

So it does
Because we do

Right About Now

Looking at myself in the mirror as
My life becomes clearer I see
I wanted an adventure and it has
Been and now is clearer to me
Revealed in my face and my memory
As from the why through to the what
And from believe all the way through to know
What I am doing and have done
Remembering a few things I forgot

A little sadder but I like to think
A little wiser maybe though
A little like I stepped back from the brink
But the final act has begun

Wanting an adventure I have been one
Being rather than having when
I have nothing left but being to then
Find myself in the mirror as
I find myself smiling at who is there
That old familiar paradigm
Who is here and would know me anywhere
Wearing this old familiar face
This entity lost in space and out of time

And only me to show me how
The best of my being is right about now
Looking at myself in the mirror as
With what is most right about it
My life becomes clearer I see

I wanted an adventure and it was
And is and I do not doubt it
The adventure I ventured forth to find
Turns out to be inside my mind
And this is the gift which is given me
Right about now by destiny
I wanted an adventure and it will be
And only me to show me how
The best of my being is right about now

If I Am Dead

It may very well be when you read this
I am already dead and gone
As they say though I do not believe that way

If I am dead I did not go away
And now look what page you are on

Whether I am alive or dead
I thank you for this page you read
And I hope you can feel my kiss

Who write write to be read alive or dead
And if I am dead this is what I miss

Saturn's Rings

I do not know how you do it
But that is the way these things are
However you know you knew it
Shining easily like a star
Inspiring me comfortably
Though both of us wore Saturn's rings
How you do it I cannot see
But that is the way of these things

I do not know how you do it
But I was glad for you to be
Though it was madness even so
Where worst gets worse before it brings
Out the best from our sufferings

Glad you were with me even though
Now I may never know how you
Do it but I am glad to see
By shared insights and offerings
What I do not know but you do

I do not know how you do it
But I know you brought me through it
Shining easily now a star
People to see places to go
Inspiring us comfortably
Though all of us wear Saturn's rings
But that is the way these things are
And that is the way of these things

Step by Step

Step by step I will take the hill

As surely as the hill has taken me
And has taken awhile and will take me still
Taking the hill is a matter of the will
An acceptance of reality
As it really is and not the way some say
Who have some axe to grind some tendency
Some deficit of curiosity
Something less than we care to be

We turn out to be extraordinary
As good as we dare to be anyway
And since I am the one to put a price on me
My opinion matters though it hardly flatters
So to save myself a false economy
I will declare myself priceless and leave it
At that then convince myself to believe it
Taking the hill is a matter of the will

Step by step I will take the hill

A Question Answered Yes

In the contention between love and fear
That dialectic driving human lives
Love always wins though sometimes the hard way
Is the only way to win around here

Like Jesus for example but he won

At the end sometimes is the place we start
Sometimes we have to bear a curse to bless
A thing well done as something well begun
When our victory is what fear cannot see

And the purity of the heart of love
The altruistic essence of its flame
Is the part of it I am proudest of

A quest without hate or anger or blame
Without limitation intrinsic to
Itself as it soars though it crashes too

And if it crashes still we know its heart
Pure with its ultimate victory sure
Another of us aspiring to be free

Who since we have known fear now understand
Love is a question and not a demand
And more than anything a statement of
Acceptance open to embrace to say:

I care about you as I care for me
To share the universe with hand to hand
To live love on the breath of victory
And to be here when the answer arrives

When the quest becomes a question answered yes

Beyond

for Ashleigh as she goes to Oregon

Beyond the pink and purple morning clouds
A moment past time to eternity
Beyond the preoccupied morning crowds
Behind your eyes inside is where you see
Beyond your street is more to meet is more
To see than you have ever seen before

Alone with love you see the petals of
The lotus as it unfolds there within
Where inner eyes open and you begin
To learn how to see by the light of love
That it turns out love is God after all
God is love and they were right about this

But maybe they loved God a size too small
As more concerned with punishment than bliss
And once you fall in love with God you know
That they must have misunderstood God when
They misunderstood love since now as then
You have to fall in love with love or fall
Victim to the victims of fear again
Unready for the universal kiss
The light of love is what the lonely miss

And now you know and grow and go your way
Beyond the preoccupied morning crowds
A moment past time to eternity
Beyond tomorrow beyond yesterday
Beyond the pink and purple morning clouds
Behind your eyes inside there where you see
Beyond your street is more to meet is more
To be than you have ever been before

Love Song

Parlous and perilous it has been
To rise and fall and rise again
And this is the way this life turns out
I see
But rising and falling either way
Uphill and down and come what may
Love is what all the fuss is about
For me

And this is the way this life turns out
Giving and taking living and making
Love is what all the fuss is about
For we
Who know its magic yet cannot explain
What no one needs to (who know what I mean)
Rising and falling but rising again
To be

The Other Goodbye

I remember now it was inviting and
How it was exciting I remember now
Here in the here and now I remember how
It had its ugly underside I understand
But I understand what was exciting was
What was real what I feel at this late hour still

It has to be this dangerous to be this much fun
And is only made more beautiful because
Although it had its ugly underside and does and will
And I have slipped and fallen there a time or two or three
That is not where you look if you are looking for me
Since I am here in the here and now to be and to stay

So this is not goodbye this is hello
The other goodbye in another way

I once believed it all works out but now I know it does
And it has to be this dangerous to be this much fun
Although it is the hard way it works out even though
The easy way gets harder at the end of the day
I still believe in miracles because I am one
But it is only a matter of time until I know

Although it is the hard way it works out even so
At the end of the day the hard way is the easy way
By which I mean to pay attention to the in between
To feel the forgotten and see what the unseen was
To be here in the here and now to be and to stay
I once believed it all works out but now I know it does

So this is not goodbye this is hello
The other goodbye in another way

Transcendental Sonnet #1434: Friend

with all my love to all my friends

Ultimately what it will be is you and me and how
We got along and did right or wrong and then would be now
Because it always has to be and always is somehow

And it will come down in the end to what kind of a friend
I was because you just know that is how it has to be
When I am invisible except reflected by those
I chose or who chose me to be the mirror I suppose

But I can be your mirror and your mirror can be me
And it turns out ultimately what it will be is now

My seeing is the freeing of my mind of my being
Never left behind nor lost ahead but always simply
Now being and now freeing and now seeing being free
How meaningful it is to be the me of you and me

To be that kind of a friend it comes down to in the end

Within Darkness

When light is long and low late in the day
Waiting for me within darkness is dawn
The only thing left when the dark is gone
And nothing lasts forever so they say

I have done it the hard way for so long
Pomp and extenuating circumstance
Not really knowing what I am doing
Trying to do right and not to do wrong

Growing up as a boy in a bubble
I cannot complain but I do anyway
Since everyone else can as well as do
If I complain I have it coming too

Though I have nothing to complain about
And I am content because I know that
The light is on within when it is out
With the equipoise of a diplomat

I can embrace the one or the other
I could reach for the light but why bother
When the wheel of life is the rheostat
Bringing the light up and down and around?

It only goes to come around in fact
Whenever the light is lost it is found
Returning from its turning back intact
When night is longest then light comes again

The sun is still there where storms are brewing
Here where love surprises on the rebound
Where no one wants to be any trouble
And nothing lasts forever so they say

The turning and returning I live by
Beginning up east and ending down west
To me yet continuing through the rest
Unmoving and yet always moving on

And all things turn in turn within the dance
Turning as light and darkness interact
Around the wheel of life across the sky
When light is long and low late in the day

And I am content because I know that
Waiting for me within darkness is dawn
With the equipoise of a diplomat
The only thing left when the dark is gone

A Healing Dance of Our Common Things

for my friend Edwin Cordevilla and the Facebook Poetry Community

All of nature conspires to cause me to see
Every season each year every hour each day
The simple glory of how it is to be

And I see it now and this is how I pray
My offering of thanks in these patterned words
Imitating other animals and birds
One with them looking for my place in the sun

Facing east and lifting my soul to the sky
Embracing love wanting to share it though none
Can really describe it to nonetheless try

By means of symbolic signification
Of love and of its ramification by
Means of grace through time and space to bring your face
To a smile awhile by magic for a spell
Of all the spells I know my favorite one
Which I have practiced and enjoy doing well

And the lotus unfolds only asking me
Take a chance to see what the universe brings
And make a healing dance of our common things

Where we may speak what may not be spoken yet
What has to be spoken by someone somehow
Where we may remember before we forget
About the simple glory of being now

We may be bruised but we are not broken yet
Here where life is love and love is poetry
All of nurture inspires and rouses to see
What we have in common in the commonplace

Every season each year every hour each day
The simple glory of how it is to be
And I see it now and this is how I pray

Turning west returning my soul to the sky
None can describe it but nonetheless I try

Transcendental Sonnet #1433: Saturday Night

Saturday night is a good time to be:
Better than any weekday then and when
At its best a romantic fantasy
Of two romantic fantasies entwined
So that they have no choice but to remain
Fantastic when Saturday night is gone

If you believe it is easy to see
In dreams coming true again and again
Returning with the turning of the days
Down Saturday nights into humankind
Up Sunday mornings of divinity
And ever further inward to always
Ages on ages as the dance goes on:
Saturday night is a good time to be

What Matters

I have come a long way but had a long way to go
And am still going and coming so I cannot see
If I am there yet or if I get there how to know
Where there is if where there is has specificity

What we always thought could never be is probably what
Will be because of something like the sense of humor of
A universe of multiversal serendipity
As we remember things we never knew and yet forgot

It all comes back to us and now it all comes back to me
I never knew what it was if always what it was not
But the purpose of the exercise turns out to be love
Which turns out to be everything our source and destiny

Love is what matters when reality shatters leaving
Only a black hole where the mirror used to be
When life is disjointed and I am disappointed in
Everything else love will never stop believing

I have come a long way but it took awhile to begin
To stop caring about broken mirrors and such
When life is disjointed I am not disappointed (much)
The first to the finish is not the one to win

And I believe in love as the only thing I know
I have come a long way but have a long way to go

Spring Lotus Song

for my friends Aurora and Robert

This is the thing the thing about spring
The thing about spring to make you sing
If only in your heart silently
When you sing in spring you sing about
Living and about celebrating
Everything leaving none of it out

To sing in spring is the thing to bring
Totality to reality
Behind out of sight and out of mind
A quintessentially simple thing
Though out of season quite hard to find
Happening all at once wherein we
Are emboldened to abandon doubt
A season though doubt would clutch and cling
About everything in spring we sing

We know what we are singing about
Each with our note in the harmony
This is when all of us finally
Forget ourselves and get it in spring
Everyone at once having their say
Singing everything so it makes sense
A sounding resounding tapestry
Hearing it here in the inner ear
Where only the inner eye can see

When you sing in spring this is the way
Manifestations of life appear
When the signs of life are most intense
And God is not far away but near
As here in your heart waiting to be
Your lotus unfolding day by day

Ah!

This is the thing the thing about spring
The thing about spring to make you sing

Faith

I think of my ancestors who applied
Themselves to perfection such that they died
Anyway but who took their chance to try
And do their perfectionistic best to
Move on up and get a piece of that pie
And got it and had it and ate it too
And stayed imperfect but I understand
This trait fate passed down to me by their hand

I think it could be the strength of their faith
Was that they were weak and afraid of death
And were not hypocrites enough to lie
About it and if they doubted it they
Just put that part of it on layaway

Since they somehow had an awareness of
The strength of their faith and knew it was love
Beneath all the shalt nots and shoutings peace
Above the tumult of it all
A loving goodbye a peaceful release
Becoming a leaf in the fall
And till then doing the best we can do

I think it could be the strength of my faith
Is though I was weak and afraid of death
And am not hypocrite enough to lie
I am now no longer afraid to die
Becoming a leaf in the fall
Since I somehow have an awareness of
Above the tumult of it all
The strength of my faith and know it is love

Transcendental Sonnet #1432:
Great White Wings

for Patricia Lance

Great white wings behind and over me
The love of my mother
Great white wings to find and cover me

The love of none other
Than she who gave me this life arrives
And comforts me and shows
That she on these wings of love survives
That she is and she knows

And that I never need face alone
The madness of my days
The love of my mother for her own
Is here now as always

Great white wings to find and cover me
Great white wings behind and over me

Transcendental Sonnet #1431:
Hell of a Show

How entertaining to be

I am and I am not sure
With that shared uncertainty
Which we endure but the cure
For which is mortality

Cure and disease as it were
An irony I regret
(Entertaining even so)

I remember what was good
All that possibility
With what was bad understood
And let go of now by me

In all a hell of a show

And it is not over yet!

Something Out There

The universe is beginning to look
A lot more interesting now than what
We used to think of as the way it was
As all the laws of physics we once took
For granted are turned inside out because
Though we thought we thought a lot about it
Yesterday when we thought less than we knew
Today we know we knew less than we thought

The universe keeps surprising those who
Think they have it figured out but who miss
The universal heartbeat pulsing through
All even them since it feels like a kiss
A kiss beyond any doubt about it
And sometimes we fear some things being true
Like that something out there we feel in here

The common name we have for it is love
And because hate is only love gone bad
The opposite of love we know as fear
Tingling along the shadowed edges of
Us where what is known and what is not known
Contend and conspire to leave us alone
Without knowing anything only this

Fear is the feeling which can drive us mad
But we feel love's heartbeat within our own
Though we hesitated to admit it
Yesterday when we thought less than we knew
Today we know we knew less than we thought
There is an it to get and we get it
I think we always got it but forgot
There is something out there we feel in here

Lotuses Unfolding Everywhere

As we come to learn
It is better not to interfere
With lotuses unfolding
As we come to turn
Inward to watch the blossom appear
And see what it is holding
We need never earn
That universal scolding
Of being embarrassed by impatience then
When all we need to do is be till when

Not doing anything but being there
With lotuses unfolding everywhere
Surrounding us around us and within
Wherein the process is to begin
Again since beginning is what we do
Where our lotus dreams begin to come true

There is the where within the wherein
Within at the point we know to be
The still point of the me as of the you
The irreducible essence we
Recognize as where we really are
As there we recognize each other too

This is the there where we find
The heart and the soul the point of view
And also the state of mind
Which make us each a separate star
Make us feel active and like taking charge
Like making things happen and living large

But we should leave the lotuses alone
And simply be happy that they are here
To bloom as they know best till when unknown
When we will know there where we will know why
Not doing anything but being there
Separate stars together in the sky
Lotus dream constellations coming true
Watching the blossom appear
Learning not to interfere
With lotuses unfolding everywhere

Here We Are Again

for my fellow survivors

We suffer in this life but not in vain

The most important things we learn
We learn by accident
Each of us could have gotten killed
Yet here we are somehow

"Better to marry than to burn"
And other odd advice
Whether misunderstood or meant
Was our hard way to learn
Requiring virgin sacrifice

There is where our youth went

It took the skills of our most skilled
Attorneys and physicians
Scratching their heads at our limitations
Matching them though through their ministrations
To barely squeak us out of some
Tight spots and awkward situations

Like being strapped to gurneys now
And then along the way
In ambulances to the promised land
Learning hard lessons of the day
Through occasional crackups in both kinds
Crackups of bodies and crackups of minds

We have been overcome but we have overcome
And having overcome what overcame us
We came through what we thought was hell
And we came through it pretty well
We might be stubborn but we understand
And nobody else survived to blame us

So... here we are again

Whether meant or misunderstood
Feeling good about being now
Being well and doing well by doing good
Seeing the universe by giving a hand
Freeing the multiverse by taking a stand

Falling or diving in any case arriving
Being and seeing and freeing ourselves to
Keep having accidents and learning as we do
The most important things we ever knew

A little wiser... here we are again

Toward a Philosophy of Being

In our universe of unfolding multiplicities
Where and when anything can happen and everything does
With so many choices and chances confronted by these
As well as so many other questions questioning through
Our multiplying multifoliate realities
We might fear how it might be as opposed to how it was

But how it was might not be how it is or it might be
And we are only here and now no matter what we do
Only this for this moment with no further guarantees

Yet nothing but possibility is nothing to fear
For us here in the now of being now and being here
And whether it is serendipity or the unseen
Or likely the former in the service of the latter
Here we are as we are now at the heart of the matter
The meeting place of time and space on the point of the spear

We who have been and who will be
On the point of the spear right now and right here
Are those who are and one is me

Happy to be here as to be anywhere
And it looks like this is the place
Happy to be now as anytime I might
Now when time intersects with space
Where there are a lot of questions in the air
And we hope things will turn out right

But things turn out right multifoliate ways
Each of them worth being to see
And where and when our imagination says
Trick or treat as we go and grow
Imagining down our nights and up our days
Dreaming them we make them so

In the in between of never and always
Remembered and yet waited for
In the equipoise of nothing less and nothing more
Right now right here on the point of the spear

Simply Because

Big dogs are stepping out in the out of doors
Large dogs on the town maybe one of them yours
Trotting right along as graceful as you please
Tippi tippi tip on tapered pointing feet
Tails like banners bobbing brightly on the breeze
Sniffing and sneezing should they happen to meet

And bark bark bark as they party in the park!

Those large dogs on those streets these big dogs on these
All over the city stepping out tonight
Out to taste the air of an evening in spring
Smiling with their tongues out because it feels right
Tippi tippi tip and a clicking of claws
Toes tapping out happy-ever-aftering

And woof woof woof as they dance up on the roof!

All the big dogs from distinguished to funny
Find a night like this to be too good to miss
It might have something to do with the weather
Especially now it is so balmy here
Temperature might be a factor whether
The night feels right after day bright and sunny

And bow wow wow they are barbecuing now!

Large dogs looked forward to an evening so clear
Some sporting sweaters all slipping their fetters
The best dogs because good dogs know no betters
And where are they trotting? I cannot say where
But they cannot either not till they get there
And why are they stepping out? Simply because

But is my tale of tails true ? ...I wish it was!

Courage

Because the universe is a multiverse
In which what is so is so and so and so
And everything is going all at one go
Turning and spinning and losing and winning
I choose to choose the better over the worse
What I would like to know beyond what I know

And though I know I am late to have done it
And though some who ought to know might be surprised
I choose to change for the better now because
I would like myself to be self-realized
Choosing the high road and having begun it
Doing my best I am better than I was

Though that was the best I knew how to do then
Now is better late than never I suppose
I will get where I get and will tell you when
I get there if I do so everyone knows
That all I ever wanted was to be good
Enough or if not then to be understood

If I can feel the corners of the now then
I think I can accept my position here
And can find my way to the moment of when
If things like the corners of the now come clear
Something to show me life is not meaningless
Something like the corners of the now I guess

Death has an appointment and does not delay
To take one so life might another one bring
I am old now and tired of being afraid
And though some being paid and some being played
Playing on others for pay can live that way
I choose to not be afraid of anything

I choose with all my heart to stand up and say
I choose now to not be afraid anymore
I choose now to turn from the dark toward the day
This is what I think I might have come here for
This is what I think I came to overcome
In a time for courage I choose to have some
