Aunt Blanche's Third Move

for my friend Robert

"Three moves is a lot like a fire"
My Aunt Blanche used to say
Just to stay put was her desire

But Aunt Blanche moved away
Her forwarding address was clear
In the sweet by and by

"You want to find me? Look up here"
She said but had to die
At last to find stability

And with a catch which caught:
I see her grave and see that she
Stays put no matter what

We Are the Show

for the Young Americans

We are not explainers
We need not explain the inexplicable
We are entertainers

When nobody else can do the show we will

We are the menders
Of brokenness you see
We are the benders
Of our reality

We are transcenders

We are the show as far as we know
Who find it inexplicable to be
Just like you do but

We are not explainers

We wonder about but are not sure what
It is in the end we
Wonder about when we wonder then
We are left to wonder just like you do but

We are entertainers

Knowing what we do not know we have a show
To do and to be and be as we do
We are the show as far as we know

And who we are but you?

Who Knows?

How did this happen to me
That I am become as I am now?

All I did was happen to be...
And then I just kept being somehow

But it seems to be addictive
Since I am curious to see
The future lived presently
Nor has the past been predictive

I just never know
How my life will go

I meant to set your world on fire
To melt your heart by my desire
And always aspire to inspire
You higher to higher and higher

I do not know if I have done so

But

I am curious (no matter what)

And the random reinforcement of it all
Ascending in the rise
Fascinates no less now in the fall
Seen up and down through young and old eyes

And as the world goes
Around and around
It is probably best just to say
Head in the clouds feet on the ground
Like me today:

Who knows?

Holes in the Sky

In the dialectic of love and fear
Some people have a scripture about it
As in my own tradition I have one:

Peter says "perfect love casts out fear" and
So do I without reason to doubt it

And loving imperfectly understand
Since having been loved that way I know how
As much as something like this can be known
Love is never afraid and always kind

And no matter what has happened before
There is nothing to be afraid of here

Escaping frightened and frightening priests
Forgiving ourselves for what they have done
Free human beings now not burdened beasts
Having left that way of thinking behind

Love brings us together to love the more
Here where at last they have left us alone

We look for the love we were looking for
Disinterested and simple and small
And caring for each other far and near
We would just like to make it better now

Perfect love is pure and enough for all
To dare to break through to our humankind
Marked with a drop of our blood and a tear

Let this be our sign of better begun
At the crossing of the heart and the mind
Though having survived what we have we are
Believers in love unafraid of fear
Who may never find it but who may try

Let this be our sign of better fought for
A galaxy our own and each a star
And where there are dark places we know why

As finding the love we were looking for
We shine the more for the holes in the sky

Let this be our sign that we loved and won

Pretty Good at Parallel

For something to be normal it is supposed to be
Perpendicular
To a tangent at a point of tangency

I have gone off on tangents aplenty
And yet I am not perpendicular

If ever I was or ever I were
To be
That way that would not be me

Though there are a few things I do well
Being pretty good at parallel
For example and possibly poetry
Perpendicularity
Is a rarity
To me

I stand a gentle contrapposto apropos
To one who does and yet who does not know
Who cares quite a lot
And yet who hopes to think he wishes he did not

Happy in the Here and Now

It took me all this time and is taking
The rest of whatever remains
To me for all this breaking and making
These universal labor pains

Whatever it is I am going through
Which is and yet hardly explains
The mindful process of my getting to
My destination which is now

I am not really going anywhere
But everywhere as I learn how
The hard way of course as I always do
To get to here from here and there

To care about nothing and everything
To escape invisible bars
To remember how to smile even sing
And to find myself in the stars

I am going to get through this somehow
And someday I want to be free
I want to be happy in the here and now
And I want to be friends with me

Time for the Impossible

for my daughter Maria and her new Master's Degree

What is it that some lack
Though they have everything (what is
Possible anyway)?

What is holding them back?

They are doing nothing that is
Impossible today

It is time for the impossible now!

Because some things matter no matter what

Are these things possible? Possibly not
And are they improbable? Probably

But now is always the best time for me
And for you too the best time there has been
For seeking if not for finding out how
To go all the way nor settle between
Because some things matter no matter what
And should be done though some say could not be

Don Quixote de la Mancha knew
Like I do and like you do too
No if perhaps and but no maybe

No time like the present baby!

Where the Light Goes

(from my perspective as a bipolar paranoid schizophrenic psychotic)

Tonight knows where the light goes and gets out of the way
And when it comes everything hums and it is today

If it were always night it would only be half right
With parallel disarray if it were always day
But two as to are balanced as today and tonight
The turning of the wheel to the learning of the real

Opposites in balance turn the wheel the middle way
Below as above to turn and learn and come to know
What comes to mind at times like this when I look within
Myself to see tonight leave so today can begin

I learn by turning to and not by turning away
When everything is nothing and when I am no one
Then nothing is everything and I am everyone
It is love after all in the rise and in the fall

At times like this when the light is rising within me
As tonight is leaving so today can begin me
Again as it has always been again and again
I am learning the real to the turning of the wheel

And the learning of the turning is love even though
It only seems to go to come and to come to go
To learn by turning to and never turning away
In the rise and in the fall it is love after all

And when it comes everything hums and it is today
Tonight knows where the light goes and gets out of the way

Blue Moonlight

And so all right then here we are
As you reflect blue moonlight in your skin
The shadow of a distant star

And I cannot see how this could be sin

Waking and yet dreaming about
Blue moonlight shining without from within
Whispering we wonder about
If this could happen somehow that we win

We bet ourselves and here we are
To be before we go

And though tonight when near and far
Ours and a billion other dreams begin
I am no gambler but I bet
It all on you and blue moonlight tonight

Remembering you I forget
About who thinks that this is wrong or right
No looking back and no regret

How do I feel that I know this is real?

We bet ourselves and here we are
To be before we go
Blue moonlight is the way I feel

Enough for me to know

When

Some say they feel we were deceived
By those who taught us what
They thought they had to and believed
Some do but I do not

Themselves deceived they could not know
And none of them could see
Not curious enough to grow
They never would be free

They thought they did but did not know
Too careful to begin
I think they meant well even though
They shut me out from in

Though not intending to deceive
They did as they were told
But could not see could not believe
At any age too old

Now I see they were afraid then
Of our asking when and
They made us wait but God knows when
And now I understand

They simply could not simply be
And thought it better to
Avoid too much reality
So this they did and do

They did the best they could with such
Assumptions as they had
Though their presumptions cost us much
And some of us went mad

But through the madness I survived
What others had to miss
And here at last I have arrived
At now in spite of this

And I forgive them all now as
I hope for better days
Though I remember how it was
I always have always

And that was then and this is now
As that is always then
And now as then I wonder how
But now is always when

Love is Why

Riding a blue world round a yellow star
Life is the mindful process of the wheel

A stillness actualized in motion
The journey is the destination now

In body and mind inside us and out
Not where we are going but where we are

And that we are is what we are is real
And as we are going we find out how

Some find inside us and others find out
That we are not as alone as we feel

If we are islands love is the ocean
If we are lonely stars love is the sky

And as the wheel turns we learn love is why
And why not as we once knew but forgot

We are here to remember who we are
Riding a blue world round a yellow star

Where the Stars Bloom

On my way into the expansion of consciousness
It is like a canyon but its opposite
Like here is there and this is that and like more is less
And the wondering the making sense of it
Like entering a canyon of consciousness wherein
Down goes up and what is ending must begin

As far away and as close as it can be

On my way out of the contraction of thoughtfulness
Into that opposite canyon of meaning
I can see how to find the impossible no less
Than everything from nothingness by gleaning
Everything is possible anything nothing less
Everything gleaning meaning from nothingness

All times present time simultaneously

Nothing ever lasts forever nothing but nothing
And the essence of ever of us the soul
That essential part of us a part of everything
Part by which we participate in the whole
Of everything completely in the completion of
The constellation of us as drawn by love

Out of nothingness we see that we are everything
Out where the stars bloom like flowers in the spring

Raindrops

A couple of raindrops falling through the sky
Two raindrops you and I are we
Who took a look at try
Deciding it looked better tried as done

A couple of the tried and true
Who do not try but do
From try to do out of the blue
A couple of raindrops you and me
Of many raindrops two and I am one
Being now seeing how to fall is to fly
When we become the sea

Wherever we are forever we remain
A couple of raindrops you and I
We who cycle sea to sky and back again
As raindrops you and I are we
Who do not try but do
And doing is our destiny
A cycle unending as unbegun

Being now seeing how to dry is to fly
From try to do into the blue
A couple of the tried and true
When we become the sky

A Transcendental Intimacy

I see across the sea in my reflection
Someone is looking back at me there
In a moment of conjoined introspection
Joining here and there at everywhere

Coming and going in either direction
Connected as by universal telephone
In a transcendental intimacy
Here and there at everywhere and I am alone

But someone is reading my poetry

Across the lonely universe tonight
We see
Not before nor after not ahead nor behind
Someone and I are neither here nor there

Though much is wrong yet so much else is right
That we
Across the sea tonight in our reflection find
Someone is here looking back at us there

Where someone is reading my poetry
Across the lonely universe tonight
In a transcendental intimacy
Where here and there are joined at everywhere

Three for Two

I

I get depressed on Mother's Day
And Father's Day too
I never noticed Children's Day
Except for you and you and you (and you)

I just wish there were a day for all of us
And if there is not never mind all the fuss
For me at least
(I am a beast
I know)

I believe in holidays
As I believe in always
Although
My mother is gone
And I am alone

I keep keeping on
But have always known
That I am a misfit ultimately
They do not have a holiday for me

II

Why is it always the "fear" of the Lord
They want? There is something about that word
Which is awkward and does not translate to
Love as some think that it does and some do

With nothing to lose but my fear I say
I will love the Lord and not be afraid
Somebody wants to control me this way
But love over fear is the choice I made

I believe in a God who feels like a kiss
And having lived fifty-five years in fear
I believe we need a little love around here
Nor need I be afraid of hell for this

My choice made I am not afraid to live
And I am even less afraid to die
I would live love and I would die to give
My fellow humans the right to ask why

And then if they forgot to ask why not
I would gladly ask on their behalf too

III

Hey you
(Who know who you are and who I am too):

I know it is madness but I want to be
And do
The highest the purest the noblest the best
Of me for you

Just because it seems like my destiny
And just because it seems like the rest of me
Will follow too

Although I am broken
(Am nobody)
It is unspoken
(If spoken by me)
That this is three for two
(And two is who?)

I know it is madness but: I love you

This is How

You have listened to me and have understood
That I am the one to listen to
Whatever you tell me between you and me
To not only listen but hear you
And to not only hear you but understand
I have felt a lot like you do too

You who came looking for me by whose hand
The future liberates the past to be
The freedom of the present presently
Where both of us are only always now
I will love you by listening to you
I can make it better and this is how

We have found the nature of reality
More interesting than we had thought
Both more complicated and less than it seemed
We woke up by morning and forgot
What was by night before and the dreams we dreamed
To remember them no matter what

We feel each other's feelings and it feels good
As I love you by listening to you
We have listened and have understood
That I have felt a lot like you do too
By what we say and what we do not
We can make it better now and this is how

Crazy

for Lindsey

I am an unsuccessful suicide
I am and do but I have tried
Not to

I took my lethal dose of Valium
But took the tablets one by one too slow
Which gave the paramedics time to come
With time for those who cared to call them
Time for my madness to appall them

An unsuccessful suicide (I know)

And thinking about it now I am glad
If unsuccessful even so
To be alive now though still mad
Being here being astonished by you
As I remain
Alive to you as you do what you do

Just me (again)

You make me crazy but in a good way
A way which makes me want to stay
With you

For Lindsey Hastings

I love it when you visit me and share
The sunshine of yourself and we are there

And when the sun goes down it winks at me
And when the moon rises I see your face
And I think about serendipity
And when the stars come out I feel the grace
And feel the glory of our empathy

And there it all is in as above us
And we are all of time and all of space

And maybe there is a God to love us
And maybe all I ever needed was
Just you just me just us and just because
Whatever this is this is the thing I
Sing the thing I sing and my everything

I am too grateful to ever ask why
But why not is as good as anything

Come with Me to the Come What May

Come transcend the commonday
Come with me to the come what may

We might even find the meaning where
Looking for the meaning honestly there
Is not made demeaning dishonestly
By the tendentious intervening
Assuming and pretentiously
Presuming to tell you and me how to be

I prefer to take a chance on the come what may

Come away to the dance of the come what may
Where what is uncommon soon
Cheek by jowl like tick and tock
Will rise up like a harvest moon
Or two or three as common for you as me
In lines foursquare and chockablock

Come transcend the commonday
And may the uncommon be
As common for you as me
Come with me to the come what may and see

The Midst

for Pamela Mullins

I am in the palm of the hand of God at
The center of the universe where my soul
Is serene and secure in the promise that
Though all fall apart around me I am whole
That I was broken once but not anymore

I asked and the answer is becoming clear
As I was asked when my answer was the same
Healing the stronger to journey the longer
Developing secret wings by which to soar

Not like Icarus to sail the sun through air
But in the here of the inner atmosphere
The here always simultaneously there
The here of the where the there of the here
Here where the universe calls my name
Reminding me what I came here for

In the palm of the hand of God there my soul
That which was broken once but not anymore
Is here at home at the hub within the wheel
Where everything balances far into near
The eye of the storm the midst of what is real

I remember now what I came here for
I was broken once but not anymore

The Stair of Everywhere

I used to be a misfit but now I fit
Myself and this seems to be the point of it
An older man with hair past my shoulders now
As experiment in how long it can grow
Because I have stopped getting haircuts somehow

Not that I got them I just had them but I
Think I had the last one three summers ago
And I no longer worry about my hair
But that it is still there as I am still here
And that it is still there is enough for me

But if I were there then my here would be there
And yet there is only where here would appear
But appears to be as good as anywhere
And it seems like a good place for me to be
But I am only in this heartbeat this breath

And the wiser I become the less I know
But the duller my eye the sharper I see
And there round the corner of my eye is death
An older man turning ascending the stair
Our eyes meet but there is nothing left to say

I will wrestle with the angel for the dawn
Turning ascending the stair of everywhere
One who though turning will never turn away
One who sees death round the corner of the eye
To the top of the stair where the light is on

Turning ascending the stair of everywhere
To the top of the stair till the night is gone
They say it is hopeless but I want to try
I used to be a misfit but now I fit
Myself and this seems to be the point of it

I will wrestle with the angel for the dawn

Inside

I used to be brittle before I broke
I used to argue with you and doubt you
I finally got the fire with the smoke
Taken to task by mistaken belief
On my part that I could live without you
I failed to see it coming but it was
The bonfire of my vanities to burn
Away my chaff and something like relief
Simply to laugh at myself and to learn

A hard landing but an awakening
Of what was always there inside of me
Important enough for the risk because
Of the secret only the fire could bring
To light by burning and yet not consume
The essence within now burnished now free
Liberated as a burnt offering
Made free by the fire which burned the long night
Reborn by eclipse into morning bright

A flame to unfold like the lotus and
A flame to burn not for heat but for light
Inside of me by which I understand
That this is important that I must be
So important hard things had to be done
When hard things done the hard way turned out right
Whatever it took to get me to see
People have purposes and I have one
Inside of me inside this poetry

So it Does

So if it matters then it does
And if it does not then so what
It does not matter if I do not mind
A dream I had but then forgot

If it is like it never was
It only matters if I mind
And I do not

What matters to my mind is other minds
Especially those still open to know
Before before becomes behind
Which cannot be prevented but who try
That this is always a good time to grow
And get to know our humankind

Whatever matters objectively
If there is such a thing
We know what matters to you and me
Better than anything
We mind what matters to us you and I

So one who said he does not finds
The one who matters is the one who minds
Who feared being disappointed before
But now what matters matters more

We need each other it turns out to be
And need to know that we are not alone
That we matter to minds beyond our own
That human solidarity
Is what you need as much as me

So if it matters then it does
And if it does not then so what
And we will love us just because
We matter whether it matters or not
Remembering a dream we had but then forgot

And it is like it always was
It only matters if we mind
Matters of us me and you
So it does because we do

So it does
Because we do

Right About Now

Looking at myself in the mirror as
My life becomes clearer I see
I wanted an adventure and it has
Been and now is clearer to me
Revealed in my face and my memory
As from the why through to the what
And from believe all the way through to know
What I am doing and have done
Remembering a few things I forgot

A little sadder but I like to think
A little wiser maybe though
A little like I stepped back from the brink
But the final act has begun

Wanting an adventure I have been one
Being rather than having when
I have nothing left but being to then
Find myself in the mirror as
I find myself smiling at who is there
That old familiar paradigm
Who is here and would know me anywhere
Wearing this old familiar face
This entity lost in space and out of time

And only me to show me how
The best of my being is right about now
Looking at myself in the mirror as
With what is most right about it
My life becomes clearer I see

I wanted an adventure and it was
And is and I do not doubt it
The adventure I ventured forth to find
Turns out to be inside my mind
And this is the gift which is given me
Right about now by destiny
I wanted an adventure and it will be
And only me to show me how
The best of my being is right about now

If I Am Dead

It may very well be when you read this
I am already dead and gone
As they say though I do not believe that way

If I am dead I did not go away
And now look what page you are on

Whether I am alive or dead
I thank you for this page you read
And I hope you can feel my kiss

Who write write to be read alive or dead
And if I am dead this is what I miss
