Transcendental Sonnet #1222:
Magic Comes in the Dark Unbidden

for Silke my seagirl

The most important things are hidden
Fairies are very shy
Unicorns are real if unridden
Not only birds can fly
Magic comes in the dark unbidden

Disbelieving folk are divorced
From natural reality
Their minds are frigid firm and forced
Disdaining what they dare not see

Should seagirls swim to such as these?
I would not have them cast their pearls
Nor model their agilities
Before such swinish unworthies
Who see the sea but not the girls!

Great Poem! I like how it delves into fantasy, it reminds me of old Irish poems based upon their mythology. Very nice.

Thanks, Mandy!

I'm doing a new book called "Magic," and this sonnet will be on the back cover. Silke did the fantastic cover illustration. You can see more about it at my site at:

My last book, my Collected Poems, is 728 pages, with two sonnets to a page, but this time we're going to have--for the first time--just one to a page; the book hasn't gotten hugely fat yet. It should only be about 250 pages this way. My editor will begin tomorrow, on Silke's birthday. It's already her birthday in Germany--where she is now--so I will be singing Happy Birthday very soon on the phone.

I'm glad you enjoy my sonnets, and take the time to comment on them. I will try to be around here more, and I'm sorry I haven't been; it's just that I've been really busy getting this book together. It's fun, and it should be nice.

Did you read the one yet about it raining inside my car today? That's a true story. I'm sure there is some fascinating scientific explanation, but it sure was embarrassing in its effect on my pants!

I didn't know you had books. But from the sonnets that I've read I'd wager they're wonderful collections, and that is a great poem to use for the back cover, very fitting.
