Transcendental Sonnet #1116:
Driveway Daffodil

The fairest most fragrant daffodil here
Is always the very first to appear
And it grows where one would never expect

A place all other daffodils reject
In my driveway in a crack in the back
Concrete on either side tectonic plates

A tiny earthquake defying the fates
Pearl in the oyster from a grain of sand
I touch it and grasp life within my hand

I hold it in my heart a hopeful spark
And it is blooming now out in the dark
Months ahead of all other daffodils

Small things like this help heal us of our ills
To heed the seed hope brings which springs to need
