On every freedom issue, conservatives cling to the past until it is ripped from their desperate fingers by liberals (AKA progressives). Lets take a look at some of the big conservative losses:

1. Slavery. The Romans thought slavery was here to stay, and it was, for many centuries. The first GOP president, Abraham Lincoln, drafted Union soldiers to defeat the conservatives, and the 13th amendment to the US constitution, forbidding involuntary servitude, was passed in 1863.

2. Women's Rights. Conservatives fought against women's suffrage tooth and nail. Losing that fight, they fought to maintain laws controlling women's reproductive systems. They lost that in 1973 with the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision. Now they are fighting against equal pay for equal work. They will lose that one too.

3. Workers' Rights. The US government used to call out the National Guard for business owners and shoot striking workers for them. Now labor unions have the right to organize, collective bargain, and strike for fair wages and working conditions.

4. Corporate Greed. Today the conservatives want to pass laws restricting consumers' rights to sue negligent manufacturers and environmental polluters. They will lose this one too. Trial lawyers are actually public protection lawyers fighting against corporate lawyers.

Today, November 3, 2004, after the re-election of George W. Bush as President of the United States of America, it looks like liberalism in a temporary retreat. The majority of American voters have spoken and they want four more years of anti-progress.
