factcheck.com was a funny gaffe by Cheney. I am also intrigued that he would direct people to factcheck.org when it is clearly not one-sided

Yes, that's really out of character for him. One would think that he would realize what a double-edged sword that is. Naturally, when the facts are on one's own side (more or less), one doesn't mind handling double edged swords, so the Kerry partisans frequently refer others to the real fact checking place (factcheck.org).

Regarding Ben's link, those stories show some similarities with the Vietnam war. In Vietnam, General Westmorland "solved" the problem by designating areas called "free fire zones" within in which any human being could be considered "enemy combatant" and killed.

The people living in those zones were not told of the situation, so consequently, atrocities were the rule of the day. In retrospect, General Westmorland was a war criminal of the worst kind, and the two commanders-in-chief, Johnson and Nixon, are also culpable, because they had full knowledge of the strategies and tactics being executed there.

By the way, now I see that there is considerable evidence that John Kerry's courage in giving testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1970 significantly shortened the war, resulting in the saving of thousands of American lives. Indeed, he is doubly the hero.
