An Open Hand
The path to fulfilment will be long and hard
The days will be dry and the nights will be cold
Write down every word on your route
And should your memory fail you on the return
And it almost certainly will
Then there might still be a chance of reaching home
To the warmth, to the comfort, to the heart
The learning for enlightenment will be tortuous and lonely
The eyes will be red and the ears will ache
Work to understand each grain of intellectual sand
And when you encounter a fallen bridge
And there will be many
Then you might have the capacity to design new arches
And pass unhindered into the glory of celestial unity
The acceptance of faith will be painful and relentless
The back will be whipped and the pride will be degraded
Maintain the endeavour, keeping resolute and clear
For distractions will be continual
Then the image should be in focus, the clarity pure
And the journey will end with the light, and an open hand
