The Heart of Texas

Deep in the heart
of these windswept
Southern Plains
lies the emerald prairie
at the epicenter Heart of it all.

Amidst the longhorn and angus
bawls the coastal grass bows
humbly to the sweet Southern song
that arrives with that sultry summer eve.

June bugs sweep across the golden hues
in a festive dance that orbits the center
of their desire in the confines of my lamplight.

The surreal croak of grumpy old bullfrogs
orchestrated in the pitched chirp of anxious crickets
serves to back the royal inquisition of
Great Horned Owls perched patiently above me.

And in the distance the coyote chimes
his wanting cry in search of another
upon this evening's teaming field.

From the porch I sit with that sultry summer
breeze grazing my seasoned cheek
watching, listening,
to life unfolding before me
underneath the countless
shimmering stars;

slightly less brilliant tonight
in the soft, silver hue
strewn across the Heavens above me.

Deep in the heart of Texas,
by Corsicana way,
lies that emerald prairie
under that sultry summer breeze
waiting to sing me
that sweet lullaby again.
