Transcendental Sonnet #820:
My Younger Cousins Are Middle-Aged Now

The years have come and gone yet I remain
Nor do I feel that I have grown older
And life grows sweeter I cannot explain
How I grow warmer as some grow colder
But I am just getting started somehow

My younger cousins are middle-aged now
They are cross and arthritic and dumpy
I have never been fat it could be that
Their lives have been too smooth while my bumpy
Life of twists and turns keeps me on my toes

All they do is sit and count their money
And eat and vote Republican God knows
Swelling up like hogs nor finding funny
That I though poor grow backward as each grows
