Transcendental Sonnet #808:
Should Poetry Offend
I wasted a couple of sonnets worth
Of life doing what I have done since birth
On this day sad to say have been made tense
By those who think poetry is "nonsense"
I would have so much more now to show you
Had I been but left in peace to grow you
Those sonnets of my fancy undisturbed
Instead of being bothered and perturbed
Perhaps I can make up for lost time now
And write about how I love you somehow
Forgetting those who do not love nor see
The tongue of love is this our poetry
Should poetry offend then let it be
Defending the offense that it be me
