Heute
bleibt mir nur
die Erinnerung
an Tage wie gestern ...

My dearest darling girl, I take this to be of Sander, and I love it as that; you speak wisely and well of loss and memory in general and of dear Sander in particular in these words. Most of my favorite people are gone now, have passed on to a land as yet undiscovered, about which I can only dream; I hope to meet them there. Only you and I are left; stay with me! Stay with me, for I am lonely here. Our time is coming, has not yet quite come, has never been before but comes, is coming now.

Stay with me. As Mahler said, "meine Zeit wird noch kommen." My German is all rusted and lost, but the memory remains; our time will yet come. Stay with me.

I love you.

I need you. It is lonely here.
