What exactly is an eating disorder?
How and Why can we manipulate the simple, essential, innante act of ingestion to such an extent as to utterly destory our existence?
As Marya Hornbacher says in her book WASTED, "I don't know where the body begins and the mind ends," I am also plagued by this question. The torment of an eating disorder arises out of the violent conflict between the body, the mind, and also the soul. Harmony is dissrupted. We will the mind to destroy the body. We estrange the soul. And who is left, in the end, to reep the benefits? No one is left. BEING is broken. maybe we turn out thin, maybe we don't. Life and reality shattered.
After reading Dante's INFERNO several times, i use the inscription Dante reads on the gates of hell to best describe my descent into an eating disorder. He reads:
Through me the way into the doleful city
Through me the way into internal grief
Through me the way among a race foresaken
Abandon every hope, all who enter here
That is;ANOREXIA NERVOSA.
