Adrift in the Storm

Beleagured brother, adrift in this storm,
foul desperation has beseeched you
cry for this merciful abyss
to swallow your wanting soul.

Far too long you have wandered
aimlessly amidst decadent transgressions,
searching ever assiduously
for answers to questions unasked.

These questions have forsaken you
as they drift beyond reach with reason.
Clutch of the deadman, your act of defiance,
renders futile upon this driftwood dream
as it tenders its submission
beneath your sinking breast.

Shallow breath struggles defiantly.
Resolve beckons you above the surge.
The lighthouse in the distance
bids its hearty welcome to you,
"Fear not this abyss which summons you."

Sound disposition shall steady you.
If temperament feeds on persistence,
surely these waves of grace
shall carry you home.

Kevin, this poem reminds me of my struggles with depression, and the struggles of others whom I have loved, some of whom I have lost. I think it is a very good and strong and empathic poem about this problem; at least that is what it means to me. I like it very much, and I am so glad you shared it here. It's just what I needed right now, to be perfectly honest with you.

Thanks.

As always, the cinematic sweep of your language is breathtaking. You get better all the time, and you always were really good! Keep at it like this, and surely you will be a great and respected poet someday, and everyone will know your name. I'm just so glad to have known you in the early days.

Best of luck to you, and, as always...

+Goofball,

Yes, you know who I am. Now I have three fans, my wife, my mother, and you. Actually, I just received something far more meaninful to me than being published anywhere. Two young girls and a young boy in different parts of the world selected me to do a report on a modern poet for their school projects. I had to answer questions and give them bios. Just to know that I may have potentially touched their young hearts, or better yet, inspired them to write themselves, is the most gratifying thing I could have wished for. Kind of like what your work did for me.

Your poetic friend,

Kevin
