When I was a young university student, I served in the chorus of an opera company in performances of Gertrude Stein's and Virgil Thomson's masterpiece, "Four Saints in Three Acts." I will never never never forget these words, nor should you (approach them with an open mind, and you will reap rewards; they shaped my poetry):
"When this you see remember me
It had to be it had to be"
"Pigeons on the grass alas
Pigeons on the grass
If they were not pigeons what were they?"
(That latter one always reminds me of Republicans! Sorry!)
Please go to your local library or search the web and discover Gertrude Stein! You will never be the same again. "Bake" some Alice B. Toklas brownies!
