Transcendental Sonnet #554:
Seven Years of Famine
Before Silke
After my marriage failed I embarked upon
A solitary journey of the heart
My wife was lost and my young family gone
And I was in limbo living apart
I took care of my mother until she died
I lived like a little boy or a priest
I took care of my iron Grandma and tried
To find a sense of personhood at least
From taking care of children I came to bear
The brokenness of three generations
Trapped between then and now between here and there
In manifold hopeless situations
I assumed I would never be loved again
I became numb to the constancy of pain
