Living Within

Pacing back and forth across the frozen linoleum
Soles turn to ice
Fluorescents beaming down from above
As if interrogating a criminal
Convicted for an act of love

An idea when conceived seems so right
Naked limbs yearn to reach out
And love a tiny creation
But don’t seem to know how

A decision made by one affects the lives of two

Embrace the life implanted within?
Emerging into the world with inquisitive eyes and toes
Curious to learn from its bearer

Or destroy the chance
Of two eyes gazing upon the sun
As it has never seen the light of day
Of four eyes locking for the first time
As if their bond had been shared since the birth of time

The body urges this foreign visitor to stay
But the brain sends its farewell wishes as if a visa has run out
The heart cannot endure the sight
For a piece of its puzzle is lost forever

Sweat drenches the skin
As tears glide slowly down the face
No anesthetic strong enough to conceal the pain
Numb the soul

The light burns out before life breathes
Darkness extends her hand
Grasps but another soul
