I am new to nootropics and was wondering what others use and what's worth my time and money, in terms of effecs long and short term. For the most part they seem to be safe and usually enhance memory and awareness or something along those lines. What are the common OTC nootropics in the states? Can you overdose or get all gibbered up in the head for mixing nootropics?

Any information would be helpful

also I've been taking 2-5mg of vinpocetine daily and read somewhere that some contain 20mg per dosage. If I take 4-5mg and the bottle reccomends only 2 daily would that be advaisable?

Hi there,
Yeah I'm kind of new myself with nootropics. I know there's alot of good web sites out there if you just search on google. What a coincidence that you would ask about vinpocetine dosage. I just bout the same kind, only 5mg. I diddn't know they went any higher than that. It would be interesting to get some info on that. I would hate to think I've been taking weaker amounts than I could. If I were you I wouldn't do anymore than the bottle recommends but, let me know if you find anything out. I like to keep an overall ballanced caution when trying new things. Still I would like to get the maximum benefit out of vinpocetine if I could. I'm sure someone here would know about it, they seem to be a bright bunch.

rhymer
If you look on the web, the Company which manufacture (The Memory Secret, Inc.) vinpocetene recommend 2 by 5mg tablets daily with food.

Not recommended for pregnant ladies or under 18 year olds!

Thanks rymer. Do higher mg ammounts exist? What's the deal with that?

Re higher amounts:-

there was no mention in medical references, and since there is no known 'recommended minimum intake' I would conclude that if you were to take more it would be at ones own risk!
I think it is extracted from the plant vinca, so is natural, but the concentration is hardly natural - you would possibly have to eat bucketfuls of the stuff to get as much as you do out of two tablets!
Take care.

Regarding Vinpocetine....it is a semi-synthetic compound made from modifying vincamine (a plant compound found in vinca minor). Research in healthy adults have focused on 20-40 mg daily and it is considered very safe….unless taking other cerebral vasodilators (in which 5-15 mg may be more appropriate) I would recommend the higher doses and always take with food.

specific drug names, availability, and effects. Nootropics effect neurotransmitter function, for the most part. So how specific can we be in targeting neurotransmitter systems? And what do we do about desensitization? Sustained drug delivery results in desensitization rather quickly, but even episodic and transient drug delivery doesn't solve this problem. Also, what neurotransmitters do you think are optimal to effect through nootropics? Are neurotransmitter systems the optimal target, or should we be targeting something different?

how about more on receptor antagonists? NMDA-R, the different GLU-Rs, or the different ACH-Rs?

Some have proven effective for dementia like Memantine for NDMA....glutamate has several subtypes receptors of which NDMA, AMPA, Kainate, and Quisqualate are members.

Acetylcholine has 2 main receptor classes...muscarinic and nicotinic, but acetylcholine antagonists would have a negative effect on memory and cognition.
