Does anyone out there use the Golden Section to compose their artwork? This is an ancient system that can be found in the organic world. The ancients saw this system represented in nature in such places like the sunflower, the nautilus shell, the human body, etc. The Egyptians and Greeks thought that since this system seemed to repeat itself in nature, it must be the work of the gods. So, they recreated it in their art and architechture. These teachings were understood by the Rennaissance artists like Leonardo, Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Carrivagio. The great masters used different rectangles that are formulated using the golden section depending on their subject matter. These people are considered masters because they were actually creating their subject matter using this "sacred geometry" rather than simply copying what they saw. There is much more involved such as how they approached using the grid and breaking it down into smaller parts to place their subject matter in the composition. This system is really beautiful and has been lost to many who teach art, so they just aren't learning it anymore. I just wondered if there were any others who are trying to learn this system (like me) or use it in their art on a regular basis.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

no, but it sounds interesting

Are you an artist?

Hi Ellemi

I play with a little bit of an art style with designing lattices. I'm sure it's been thought of before but its a lot of fun to compose a complex lattice and with a clear mind one can see the very thinking involved and the perspectives derived from what you discussed with the Golden Section.

It's easy, try overlapping basic shapes to form a consistent design and watch the fabric take form. I'm new to this website but i'll try and put one of mine on sometime.

Phi

· Phi = 1.61803399887…
· The Golden Ratio is a geometric proportion discovered in antiquity that turns up in sculpture, botany/leaves/seashells, and galaxies/planetary orbits, and in the thermodynamics of black holes.
· Nature appears to have chosen the logarithmic spiral as one of its favourite shapes.
· The golden ratio is embedded in such geometric forms as the cube, dodecahedron (twelve faces), icosahedrons (twenty faces), octahedron (eight faces), and tetrahedron (four faces).
· Euclid stumbled upon its significance in antiquity.
· Make a square inside a rectangle and the draw a square outside it. The new rectangles are also golden rectangles, and the ratio between the squares is the golden ratio.
· Leonardo Da Vinci, an Italian 15th century artist, inventor, and sculptor, rediscovered the balanced perfection of the golden rectangle and pencilled it into his masterpieces. Connecting a curve through the concentric golden rectangles, you generate the mythical golden spiral.
