We've been through this already. Philosophical genres aren't meant to stereotype, they're meant to shortcut. I'm simply looking for an easier way to explain myself, and not an idea to live by. Besides, Mr. "Man-fisher", I'm sure the only reason your Ascension cult has any members is because you labelled them as something.

I've been over this too many times to count. If you're not helping the topic, get off the damn thread.

obnoxious little tyke, ain't he?
Agnostic4Now
This "obnoxious little tyke" started the thread in order to get answers to his questions, and not to get irritating preachers knocking on his door like so many Jehova's Witnesses.

I'm sorry, Joe, but we've already had religion and we don't want any right now! I'm sure someone else that has nothing in life to hold on to can use your preachy belief systems though!
joe
There's always more to see in life than the quick judgment that is thrown out at the irritations that you make real.

What you should do if you are really hating life and the things in it is hide inside a cave and forget about exposing yourself to outside opinions or the possibility of running into people like me.
Or just get over yourself and find the good that is in life and what you see as irritating.

As long as you throw out an idea like, "hey does anyone want to categorize my beliefs," you are wide open for all of it. IF you don't want it don't ask otherwise don't blame anyone but yourself for sticking your neck out.

I suppose you could ask only those that will give you the answer that you want to hear but then the question would be more along the lines of a poll to agree with what you want to hear with the request that anyone who might not align with your particular way of thinking please do not respond.

Whaddya think?!
Agnostic4Now
Wow..... I guess your religion doesn't believe in rehabilitation if I should just go live in a cave.

But anyway, I'm not buying what you're selling! Quit knockin on my door! You're not telling me what I am, you're telling me what I should be, and I don't want it!
joe
Really? You think that I can influence you? I never imagined so much.
Agnostic4Now
I did at one point think you could, but I've heard what you have to say about what you belief, and there isn't any more influence to be made. You have influenced me, in that now I know what I am not. Thank you very much. Now there is no more influence, and you are repeating yourself.

If you want to know what I am, you may check my new thread, Food for Thought, read the article and my posts on this thread, and then contribute to the cause: finding what my thoughts and feelings on life correspond to philisophically. Otherwise, I don't need religion.

I dont know if this will help at all, but i'm going to post some lyrics which partly convey my oppinion.

Redefine - Brandon Boyd (Incubus)

Imagine your brain
As a Canister filled with ink
Yeah, now think of your body
As the pen where the ink resides
Fuse the two, KAPOW!
What are you now?
You're the human magic marker
Won't you please surprise my eyes?
It's in your nature
You can paint whatever picture You like
No matter what Ted Koppel says on channel 4 tonight
So modify this third rock from the sun
By painting myriads of pictures
With the colors of one

I'm sick of painting in black and white
My pen is dry, now I'm uptight
So sick of limiting myself
To fit your definition

Picture the scene, where whatever you thought
Would, in the blink of an eye
Manifest and become illustrated
You'd be sure man
That every line drawn reflected a life that you loved
Not an existence that you hated
So, must we demonstrate that
We can't get it straight?
We've painted a picture,
Now we're drowning in paint
Lets figure out what the fuck it's about
Before the picture we painted
Chews us up and spits us out
I'm sick of painting in black and white
My pen is dry, now I'm uptight
So sick of limiting myself
To fit your definition
Redefine

I know that you have already said this is for a "short cut" but cant you just tell people you follow no religion, just philosophies. Most people wont even take the time to listen to listen to all this stuff... and im sure telling a select few wouldnt hurt you.

My main point (of this mostly pointless) rant, is that by defining yourself as something, just limits what you are actually conveying yourself as being.

You are you. If others dont want to understand, then they are not worth the bother.

Sorry for any inconvenience this rant may have caused. smile.gif
Agnostic4Now
As I've said before, any pidgeonholing is not done by me, it is done by people that choose to see those shortcuts as stereotypes instead of groups.

I know very well, that by telling people I am not religious that they will probably stop listening to me and ignore me. Why would I want them too? I'd rather people try to see what I'm saying and open their minds than close them off and remain ignorant (though I'm sure Joe has something to say to the contrary).

Defining yourself never limits yourself, it just lets you understand who you are instead of being confused. No one's definition really falls into a group and doesn't stray from that, like a stereotype. But living your life without understanding who you are makes you a tool for other peoples ignorance.

No offense to anyone's tastes, but could we stop posting lyrics? I have a band, and I probably could have posted about twenty of our songs that correspond to what I'm saying by now, but I'd rather save it for another board.

Take care of that arm.

DISCO STILL SUCKS.

'Nuff said.

Which arm, the right or left?
Rant
You, my friend, are not confused. You are simply pragmatic..or a 'pragmatist.' This is supported by your rejection of any metaphysical beliefs - i.e. a soul.

I find pragmatism a useful approach to methodology...critique and evaluation...but all together unfulfilling and NOT the natural state of human existence.

I think belief systems come from a pragmatic application to phenomonological experiences. Ultimately you may be wrong, but you'll feel right. Even an atheist at some point, must concede he has FAITH there is no God.

You'd like Heidegger, Sartre and from the realm of pshychology, Jung. I find the Theories of Knowledge that admit the required LEAP most inspiring. There's nothing gained in nihilism. The self satisfaction of 'everything is relative, but this statement' is vaccuous and quite contradictory to how we actually live.

Have a day.

So guys, I'm back, if anyone remembers me. BTW, I've been gone for like a year, and my thread's still front page news. Thanks, kids.

Anyone seen Joe around?
rhymer
hi A4E,
It's nice to have you back.
How ya doin?

Joe is still around, bless him, but I don't respond to his posts anymore.
I find I can't sleep when I read his posts - he lives in a different world to me, so I have decided to leave him alone. Mind you Joe [sussed] knows that I will talk to Him again.
Catch up on his posts; they are as illuminating as ever.

What have you been up to?

Best regards, Bill.
Agnostic4Ever
I'm fine. It seems like this forum has died. Lately, I've been on www.randi.org 's forum as Disbeliever, and on www.musicianforums.com 's as SubtleDagger. Though www.randi.org has some conversationt hat's so intellectual, I can't even get through the vocab.

Nice to see someone's still on here. What about Laz, and Dan?
rhymer
Hi agnostic4ever,

It's worth you having a read at Shawns notes in 'news and feedback' to find out the story of recent site non-availability.

Joe and Dan and everyone else is still available as far as I know, it's just that they are not aware that the site is back up and improved.

An interuption to service often causes a delayed callback of members. I'm just waiting patiently for folks to return and continue where we left off. I'm hoping we all get together again for a grand cchristmas party on-line - that would be most appropriate. Maybe Shawn should email all members inviting them back [but he is so busy...].

How do you like the Invision Board?
I know the chat room has gone, bit that didn't seem overused. I enjoyed my forays in there though.

I'm currently having a read at http://www.humantruth.org/ referenced by Shawn on the conciousness Board.

cusoon, Bill.

hi A4E,
as Bill mentioned, in early Nov, this site went offline for a week due to server load generated by the php pages and the amount of traffic. The server problem has since been fixed, and so it shouldn't go down again in the coming months.

With the amount of traffic that passes through this forum daily, it's very unlikely to "die" now or anytime in the future, though it does get sleepy at times, it seems. The way I see it, you get enough people in a forum, and there's bound to be discussion. There are enough people here to ensure continued discussion, so you don't have to worry about this forum dying.

About the chat room, this could relatively easily be added again, if that's what you all want.

I've heard from Joe recently, but Dan, I haven't since the site came back online in mid Nov (I think he took offense to some of the debates he engaged in here), and Laz has been very occupied with his work and probably also with his website.

I'll see about emailing members about some sort of Christmas party. I like the idea! Thanks, Bill.

take care,
Shawn
