Anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive over eating, are something many teenagers experiment with. Many people believe that anorexia is the worst possible disorder, but every single one of them can lead to death. Experts say that almost one percent of young women are starving themselves to death. Although you can not always tell if someone has an eating disorder, there are things you can do to find out, and ways to prevent it.
A person with an eating disorder may often withdrawal from social activities, contain many secrets, have an obsession with mirrors, or scales, and/or avoid events where there might be food present. Others tend to wear baggy clothes to hide weight loss or become very moody. Some people may lack energy, have dramatic hair loss, sleep depravation, or erosion of teeth enamel.
The national institute of health says that one out of every ten cases of anorexia nervosa result in serious health problems, such as death. One of the problems is, that the brain may grow smaller, which will also cause the person to act differently, or think differently. Some anorexics may become dependent on illegal drugs, or have severe depression.

Roze,
That may be something you would want to add to the paper - the "why" of eating disorders. Many people with eating disorders have a history of abuse - physical, mental, sexual, etc.
Just an idea. I'm not sure what the length requirement is for this, but if you need some more ideas I'm sure there's enough people around here that could pitch an idea or two.
But, it sounds great. I think you're heading in the right direction. You'll do great on the paper!
Much love,
Becky

The national institute of health says that one out of every ten cases of anorexia nervosa result in serious health problems, such as death, and that one thousand people will die from an eating disorder each year. One of the problems is, that the brain may grow smaller, which will also cause the person to act differently, or think differently. Some anorexics may become dependent on illegal drugs, or have severe depression.
Low self-esteem, perfectionism, cultural pressures, difficulty on expressing ones feelings, and or history of sexual abuse causes many eating disorders. Those are only some of the causes, others can include parental obsession with their child’s weight, or chemical imbalances in their brain.
Some people live their life with the feeling that they are not good enough, and that if they became thin everyone would like them. But that is only a lie that the media, family, friends, and people tell you. Who decides what’s right? Who decides what’s thin? In some cultures your considered rich if you’re overweight. Here, it’s the total opposite. When did people stop caring about other people? If they live or if they die. Society has made it where overweight people are “dying to be thin.”

One of the problems is, that the brain may grow smaller, which will also cause the person to act differently, or think differently. Some anorexics may become dependent on illegal drugs, or have severe depression.
A person with bulimia may have recurrent episodes of binge eating, which is eating more food than most people would more often then most people. They sometimes feel like they have no control over what they eat or when they eat. Many people with bulimia will constantly make themselves throw up after eating in order to lose weight. That is called purging.
There are two types of nervosa bulimia, one is purging, and the other non-purging. In the purging type the person will either make themselves throw up or misuse laxatives, diuretics, or enemas. When a person is a non-purging bulimic, they may over exercise or fast. They would not do it as regularly as vomiting or using laxatives.
Bulimia often causes kidney dysfunction, urinary tract infections, dehydration, constipation, diarrhea, seizures, and or muscles spasms. Other times it may cause cramps, chronic indigestion, for females it can cause loss of menstruation, and it also strains many of the body’s organs. Bulimia also results in death.
Compulsive overeating may cause the person to continue eating even after he or she has already been full. It can affect men or women but appears twice more in women. Some people tend to eat a lot when they are feeling depressed thinking the food will help them, but actually it makes them feel worse.
People also use food as a way of dealing with stress, and someone who is stressed more often then not may eat more often. After they "binge eat" the person tends to feel self hate, and or disgust. Someone who is a compulsive overeating may be so embarrassed about their weight that they sometimes avoid certain activities that have to do with exercise. They could try many different diets to lose weight, but always end up coming off them.
Sometimes a compulsive overeater will eat little in public, but secretly eat even more to make up for what they lacked. They also believe that most of their failures were caused by their weight, and make weight the center of their life. They can also become deeply depressed. Over eating can cause cardiac arrest, of which you can die, arthritis, shortness of breath, fatigue, high cholesterol, and or hypertension.
Low self-esteem, perfectionism, cultural pressures, difficulty on expressing ones feelings, and or history of sexual abuse causes many eating disorders. Those are only some of the causes, others can include parental obsession with their child's weight, or chemical imbalances in their brain.

Very good Roze. Though it is a mere scratch on the surface of what is underneath an eating disorder. I am sure there are some cases out there of dieters gone too far, but for most of us who live with our ED's, it is MUCH deeper than to accheive a look. One thing that upsets me more than anything else is that people think anorexia is a vanity isue...Those are the people I know have no idea of the truth of it all...
ED's usually stem form abusive families, controlling dictatorship type families. The response many of us take is to control our bodies at any cost, it becomes and obsession, a lifeline. Without my constant dieting, fasting, etc...I would feel severe panic and hurt myself in other ways. Really, it has nothing to do with trying to look like a supermodel, not for me anyhow! It has to do with a survival technique I have had since I am a kid, a terrible fear of losing control over the only thing I can control...myself!
OH BOY did I rant, sorry! Roze, your paper is good, I am sure you will do well on it. Sorry, I dont know where all that came from!
Love,
Dara
