Full Version: Guilty pleasures

I think we all must have guilty pleasures -- silly things we do, which are harmless, give us tremendous pleasure, and are just a little too embarrassing to admit.  Well, I'm changing that now...with True Confessions!

1.  There's a show on tv called "Blind Date".  It's completely vulgar and moronic, and I can't watch it often enough.  I sit in front of my television, giving the show all my rapt attention, then I force my poor husband to discuss the episode with me.  Watching this show is sort of like staring at a train wreck.

2.  At Thanksgiving, save the chi-chi, whole-berry cranberry sauce, and give me the real stuff -- the kind that looks like the can.  It slides out of the can with this extremely satisfying "shlmph" noise, and it has impressions from the can's concentric rings and seam.  Also, when you put the serving platter on your dining room table, the cranberry sauce keeps on wiggling and moving for a long time.

3.  I have a 45-rpm collection.  The songs have no common theme whatsoever, except for the fact that I happen to like all of them.  When I'm home alone, I'll play them, really loud, and sing along and dance around the house.  If anyone ever walked in on this, I'd probably keel over from mortification.  I mean, this is a collection that includes such immortal classics as "Oh Denise" by Randy and the Rainbows.

4.  "Cheese balls" and "cheese rolls" = disgusting, processed cheese food, formed into shapes and rolled in nuts.  Why do they taste so good?

5.  Another tv show:  "Unsolved Mysteries", hosted by Robert Stack (the Elliott Ness of my youth).  It has a tacky theme song, bad direction, and cheesy reinactments...what could be better than that?

Ok, boys and girls...I've come clean.  Now, it's YOUR turn!  :)

1.  Absolutely adoring and playing with my children.  I am a perfectionist and can't stand dirty dishes in the sink, a toilet that needs scrubbing, dusty furniture, etc....  But, I forsake all of that for time with my kids.  That just means that I'm up until the wee hours of the morning catching up on everything else.

2.  Playing the piano.  A little bit of Jazz and Ragtime, but my passion is with Classical music - Beethoven is my absolute favorite.  Mozart holds a close second.

3.  Garage Sales!!!  Other people's useless trash become my treasures!  Who would have thought I'd find things like a Longaberger basket at a garage sale!  And kids' clothes are the best find!

4.  And Dara, I'm with you on the choice of music - Metallica is among my favorites - along with Nickelback, Ozzy, and 3 Doors Down.

Am I boring you yet?

Just me!

Becky,

Good choices in music! AND I am a clean fanatic as well! I NEVER put away my mops, with 2 big doggies running in and out aLL DAY, AND A WHTE kitchen floor, you can only imagine the mess! I also have 4 cats who mess up the rest of the house! BUT, I love them alll dearly and wouldnt trade them in for a cleaner house! I also cannot go to bed with dishes in the sink, I cant leave for work with messy floors! I am a bit crazy... ;D

Love, Dara

Dara,

Two dogs and two kids!  And a husband who doesn't suffer from OCD like I do.  Thank God for the swiffer sweeper!

I found myself straightening the fringe on the carpet last night.  Uugh.  You don't realize that you will be the one with a problem with the fringe until you own a rug.  It might be worth the investment to replace the rug. What do you think?  LoL!!!!!!!

I wouldn't trade anything, either.  Oh, and if you're a bit crazy, then I am, too.  Good company though.  I couldn't pick a better "crowd" in which to belong.

Much love,
Becky

Chrissy,

I think it's hilarious that you call people "Lips"!!!!  That's so very, very funny!

If it's ok with you, I'm going to pretend that "Lips" is the acronym for "Lori is pretty suave".   smile.gif smile.gif  Now, you can call me "Lips", and I'll just nod my head and say, "That's right".

Thanks for adding some real fun to my day,
Lori

I really love this thread!  Thank you, Lori, for starting it, and thank you to everyone who has contributed so many interesting replies to it.  Let me see if I can think of some guilty pleasures of my own...

That show, Blind Date; I watch that too!  I especially like the Hall of Shame feature!  Most of those people are such idiots on their dates; they know nothing of the art of love!  And then there is Elimidate, that's a good one too.  I watch them in the middle of the night, with my cat, Freddie Noodles, curled up on my lap.  I always groan aloud at how stupid those men are with their dates, what horrible social mistakes they make, and Fred always enjoys it.  He seems to watch it too, and when I laugh out loud, it makes him purr; he's happy when I'm happy.  I saw Blind Date last night, and this idiot guy drank too many shots of tequila, and then vomited like five times, all the way back to the girl's hotel room; he did it in a bag in the cab, by the side of the road, behind a dumpster, all over the place!  It was incredibly disgusting and incredibly entertaining.  I should go on that show and demonstrate how to be suitably gentlemanly and civilised, but it probably wouldn't be entertaining!

I also like to make up silly songs and sing them around the house really loud.  I like to sing a silly song about Silke to Johann Strauss's Pizzicato Polka, using lots of funny nicknames for her in German; I have several funny little songs I sing about her.  I also call my daughter funny nicknames, like Guava-top and Pigsy; Guava-top because, when she was a baby, her head reminded me of a Guava, and Pigsy... I don't know why.  I once had a really cute little dog named Pigsy, and Maria's really cute, maybe that's why.

I love to watch The Simpsons, but that's really not so strange.

I read every horoscope I can get my hands on, and also the horoscopes of my friends and loved ones.

I always wear Converse Hi-tops; all my shoes are Converse, and I won't wear anything else, ever.  I also have to always wear shorts, baggy, high-school-boy shorts.  Skater shorts.  In fact, I have to dress like a skater all the time, every day.  In the evening, I like to put on black leather and go cruising in my enormous, throbbing, 1965 Chrysler, which I call The Mighty Chrysler.  I have fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview mirror, and when I see a pretty girl, I rev the engine, which is really, really loud, and backfires.  When it backfires, flames come out of the exhaust pipe.  Deeply, deeply cool, baby.  It's like 300 horsepower, at least, maybe 400.  It's been in my family since the day my Grandpa bought it.  It's a sweet and cherry and badass ride.

I exercise compulsively.  I absolutely have to do my 101 pushups every day, or I feel fat and lazy and disgusting.  I lift weights everyday too.

I love my cat more than most people love their kids.  I love my kids more than most people ever love anybody.

I love to listen to opera, really loud.  It's overwhelming, shattering, orgasmic, especially something like Puccini's La Boheme!  Oh, yowza baby!  I also love Wagner.

I like to listen to funky old records--vinyl--of German songs, really old stuff, and sing along really loudly.   You should hear me!  Good grief!

I love to take walks in the middle of the night, and look up at the stars on a clear night.  I always point to the brightest star and say, right out loud, "there is Silke shining in the sky!"  And I don't care who hears it.

I have never gotten over the death of my sweet mother on November 23rd, 1998, nor the death of my wonderful grandmother on November 8th, 2001.  I will never, never, never get over either of these.  I've given up ever expecting to.  Actually, I never get over anything...  I am the most sentimental person I have ever known.

I am a poet, a dreamer, a lover; I am an everlasting child, lost and trying to find my way home...
the_black_cat
i love whatching dragon ball z
listening to blink 182
eating brocli and cheese    and geting in my bed with every stuffed animal i own
+Steven Curtis Lance
Hey Black Cat!  I agree with you about Dragonball Z, Blink 182, and stuffed animals!  I wish I liked broccoli like you do, because it's supposed to be so good for us, but it's hard for me to eat broccoli.  I suppose the cheese would make it better though.  There's this Mexican way of making broccoli which is good--if vaporizingly hot!--but otherwise I find broccoli to be very problematic.
roachman1215
Steve, what the mexican way of making broccoli? I'm Mexican and I've never heard of it.

speaking of food...

-letting my mom satisfy my taste buds
Cheese fondue, Zwiebel Kuchen!! Spaghetti Bolognese and Tiramisu and the Xmas dessert we have every year...strictly Moms recipe!!!
The Xmas dessert goes along with the same Xmas story we hear every year,
I'm hooked to traditions
just like driving to some junk food enterprise before I go back to my boarding school...
ok that's not such a good tradition as the one before.. but hey

-i love restaurants, (Chinese!!!... remember those years in Hong Kong) my fathers wallet suffers everytime he comes to Germany
(you've probably noticed... I don't mind being spoiled)

-music... I like it so much that I seem to, in an awkward unusual way become one with my stereo.. plugging in my earphones.. letting it go through me... without noticing anything or anyone that tries to come through to me from the outside

the same goes with art....
IT'S ALL Conspiracy (BADAMM BADAMM)

--------------------------------------------------------------------
I am an annoying entertainment seeking, life-enlightened sexually driven female out there searching for the ultimate truth... and you're fragile brain to connect with

Oh yeah... when I'm in a good mood I start becoming ridiculously silly.. i start bouncing all over the place or write nonsense in Mind Brain.. like right now...

Wahay......

I'm also in the bad habit of excessively analysing past, present and calculating the future.....

I'm completely, perfectly aware of my inner child and when I'm happy it shines through...
(in a very odd way... I tell you...)
