Anyone watch the address by the president lastnight? I hear he is proposing to assist Africa in the fight against AIDS! WOO HOO! I support that! I must admit I didn't watch it, but I hope we can talk a bit here about some of the ideas and issues brought up lastnight by the pres!

Ok, who wil be the brave one to get the replies started ohmy.gif

I didn't see the president since I was in class, but I did hear the democratic response.  I had to laugh at the part where the gov. of Washington said that the democrats would continue to support affirmative action and encourage equal opportunities for all employees.  What an oxymoron - if I ever heard one.

Anyways - I taped the address, but am in class again tonight so will probably watch it tomorrow. I'll get back to you on that one, Dara!

Much love,
Becky

Thanks for the reply Becky! Let me know what you think when you watch it later, ok? Good luck in class tonight! What classes are you taking by the way? I am supposed to be taking an educational law class along with the second half of my thesis...but I think I will drop the law class...HHHmmmm

Dara ~

Thanks for asking!  I'm currently taking Statistics, Intermediate Accounting II, and Microcomputer Accounting Applications.  It keeps me busy, needless to say.

I only have one quarter left - two classes to take for graduation - Intermediate Accounting III and Payroll Accounting.  I will graduate in May!!!!  Yippee.

I had to take two separate Business Law classes (I and II).  I loved them!  But, I'm not sure how educational law would go.  Good luck.  Hang in there. I know you can do it!

Much love,
Becky

I agree with you, Anne:)

Why do you support foreign aid? The world's population is already grossly artificially inflated thanks to Europe and North America sending supplies to the Third World.

The enviro-activists always bitch about the population crisis, and the solutions they propose are always: birth control and abortion for all the world's women! But dare they suggest that the Third World be left to its own fate? No, that is too controversial, and downright mean, darn it!  :o

i think we should give 3rd world countries education, and supplies so they can try and become self sufficent....

Don't you think that by continually providing Third Worlders with medicine, food, and other supplies that they will actually be less self-sufficient and more dependent on the First World?

Really, since the end of colonialism 55 years ago, much of the Third World has done little to prove they can construct and maintain healthy, prosperous societies.

To clarify, when I say "Third World" I mean Latin America, Africa, and Asia except for the Oriental nations who seem to be an exception to the rule.

It would appear we have a Libertarian on the site.   Busy, busy, busy!  (A Vonnegut reference; for those who know, no explanation is necessary; for those who do not know, no explanation is possible.)

Christian idealogy in and through politics - the two should not mix, and not be used as a blackmailing tool with a mix of patriotism.

Peta, well put! I agree woth that statement you made 100%... Religion and politics SHOULD NOT MIX, should NEVER mix! I want to tell you, that YOU saw more of his speech than I did, as I didn't even WATCH it!

So, just out of curiosity, why would your comment cause an argument? I think you are very intelligent, and you brought up good points, especially that you are not even American!

Thanks for the contribution here, you are the best!

Peta you worte:

"Sometimes I wonder whether patriotism in US terms is different to patriotism in your homeland and mine (ie - it is perfectly normal to question and analyse in a public context without being labelled as a terrorists, or unpatriotic. I am sure that, like me, you love where you live, but don't like what's going on). I like the advice I was given many years ago - You can love the person, but not love what they do. I like to parallel that to politics - I love my country, but I don't like what the PM is doing to it."

I know of alot of people here in the US who feel the same as you do. I think that there are MNAY people here who think they HAVE to agree with everything the Pres does, or it will be anti-american of them. I , ont he other hand, think iti s good to disagree with political happenings if that is how you feel. Thank you for bringing this insight here, to our political forum!
Feel free to keep the political topics coming, as I am not really that political! I am sure you can tell! But I promise, no fights here, only open minded conversations!

Dear all,

I thought this would be of interest. The other day, our government, here in the UK, released a document on the dangers of Iraq. Colin Powell called the document "a very good paper" when addressing the UN. The paper included a lot on the terrorist "links".

However, there was one mighty flaw. Someone - with wonderful observational skills - found a lot of it to be very familiar. It turned out that the whole thing had been COPIED from a University of California student's work. It even included the SAME grammar mistakes. Even worse is that the document is 10 YEARS OLD! And, worse again, facts were changed to make it look like there were great terrorist links in Southern Iraq.

Incredible? Downing Street is VERY embarrased. This is more than spin, this is PEOPLES' LIVES. Shocking ohmy.gif

Peta, you wrote:

"I also think of the bombing in Afganistan, and how this has effected the everyday people living there. Sure, they may be rid of the Taliban (which they are happy about), but now they have lost people that they love, and are homeless and hungry. Will the US restore their homes and fill their bellies? Will the US provide educational facilities? As usual, this is left to the humanitarian groups to fix............."

I understand your position on how the bombing in Afghanistan has affected the people.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if the world could be an ideal place where  no one suffered at the hands of another?

However, I wonder how it differs, really, from the punishment that is given to those who break the law - even in our own country.  If someone murders, rapes, etc. should we not punish him/her because of the effect that may have on his/her family?  If the offender goes to prison and the family is left without income for food, shelter and clothing - should we not send the offender to punishment for his crime?  Of course not.  People are accountable for the decisions they make.  Saddam is a dictator who needs to be removed from power.  No amount of negotiations will cause him to voluntarily step down.

Am I supporting the war?  Perhaps. It should certainly be the last resort.  Am I scared?  Absolutely.  I am scared to death.  But when dealing with a man like Saddam, there may be no other alternative.  Unfortunately, the people of his country will suffer an aftermath - just as the family of the offender sent to prison does.

Just my opinion.  Glad to have the conversation.

Dear all,

I'd say this - Iraq is very weak now. Much less powerful then 10 years ago. Don't you think that if it had the capability, it would have attacked already? How about we talk about the US's huge nuclear capability...
