Full Version: I need some controls
BrainMeta.com Forum > Science > Neuroscience

Okay, I'm developing a little questionnaire for... well, I'm not gonna say what 'cause I don't wanna put ideas into peoples' heads. This isn't being overseen by an IRB and it isn't an official project, though hopefully it will be at some point in the relatively near future. I'm needing some controls to take it so I can continue to design and tweak to get it to some sort of version 1.0 presentable form. Do you mind helping?

Note: #18 is a multi-choice answer where you can have more than one answer (I've highlighted that text in red). All other questions are single-choice. Please don't skip any questions because I won't really be able to use your other answers then to formulate a score. If you do have any questions about certain items, please ask and I'll try to clarify as best as possible without leading you. And if you'd like to give any feedback, that'd be welcome too.

In most of those cases, it all depends on these major things:

Is this a stranger or a friend?
Is he/she good looking or not?
Does she/he act friendly towards me or not?
Is this a formal situation like a college class or a party?
How many people?
Is this a first time im seeing all of them?

I cannot answer the questions without these conditions answered.

Joesus, sorry, I probably should've clarified: I need you to pick a number, 1-9, rather than in between.

I would say go with whatever you do most of the time. So in this instance, average out the different environments.

For all of these questions, just assume there is an understood [in general] before them. I'm wanting to know about your behaviors in general, and while I'm sure for all of us these are going to vary according to situation, I would like you to take sort of an "average" of multiple environments. How do you usually feel? How do you usually act? etc.

No need to be sorry, I did pick a number, it's the number indicated by the "X" to the right of the number on the line that follows the number.

Ah, thanks. I was wondering if you did that, but wasn't sure to which side I should mark it. smile.gif

Obviously if one were to talk to me directly about my interests the topic would tend to have that flavor about it.
However if someone were to approach me with the usual. "Lovely weather we're having" lead in it might tend to be on the other end of the scale.
Being that I teach and also Remodel Homes I have interests in both, and the majority of people I talk to are interested in what I do and how it can be of help to them. Invariably the topic of my interest becomes the topic of their interest and I listen and facilitate the understanding and pursuit of their interest by making it my interest.

It's really not about me. wink.gif

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but in the end, what single number would you pick? I can't score 4 and 8. I can mark it as unanswered, though that would score as 0. I just can't score two numbers for a single question (except for 18 of course, heh).

For those who have now taken the test, would you mind taking this quiz (it's shorter)? I'm using it for comparison. Thanks!

Also, if you feel comfortable, either here in the thread or via PM, would you tell me your age and sex (only if you're comfortable).

No thanks for me? Oh well, guess I should reply with my AQ score.
I got a fat 30, which kind of puts me on the edge of Aspergers syndrome according to that test. I'm very interested whether your results were similar or more comprehensive.
Rick
That test may be skewed. A mathematician may score high due to his interest in numbers.
trojan_libido
That may be true, but its a test thats been used for a while from what I can make out, so I'd still be 'clinically' diagnosed near to Aspergers or another derivative of Autism.

My interest in numbers is almost entirely based in mysticism and philosophy, rather than mathematics (despite my training in maths). I certainly don't feel like mathematics is an innate ability, unlike people like Tesla and Einstein who seemed to suffer from mental 'reorder' (disorder in this context doesn't quite cover it).
rhymer
Pleasse bear in mind that many social questions are biassed because I am deaf in one ear and have constant 6.5 khz tinnitus as loud as someone talking! I do not seek more than two people at once - it causes confusion.

Well, I am expecting that even though I'm using Meta members as some of my controls, that on average you all will fall a little closer to "autism" than perhaps other non-autism related forums just because this is a very intellectually-focused group.

I have about 35 autistic adults who have filled it out so far (although very few controls atm, only 7), and the majority of them are falling within the 50-80 range, with a few on the lower and upper ends.

So far, except for trojan who suspects he may be ASC, the highest score I've gotten from a control is a very eccentric co-worker of mine who scored 38.

trojan scored in a similar range that most of the autistic adults (diagnosed or not) have scored. The second highest score from Meta is rhymer, and like he mentioned it's probably due to the hearing loss and constant tinnitus. But he is still below the lowest autism score I've gotten yet.

(I'm not giving precise scores to people for reasons of confidentiality and this also is a new test and the scores are not validated nor proven reliable, so I don't want to affect anyone's opinion of themselves.)
gehirn
Ah, rhymer, forgot to ask: Do you feel comfortable letting me know your age?

Wasn't sure since you gave your sex but didn't put age, so didn't know if you purposefully or accidentally skipped it.
trojan_libido
I do suspect I'm a little high on the scale because I have some autistic/asperger tendencies, but I'm far from the scores the diagnosed peeps got. But I think a lot of psychological symptoms labelled as ADHD or Autism are not a binary on/off syndrome, I see them as a scale which everyone has.
rhymer

I think I would score above average on this test. I have quite a few autistic tendencies.
