Full Version: Thinking in 6 Dimensions

Alright this is one fast consciousness expanding thing to try out. Alright lets start off with 4 dimensional thinking.

Here is a hypercube

Do you see how it works? Maybe these will make it easier

Maybe this way of looking at it will be easier for you...

Understand it a little better now? Its really multiple cubes contained within the same space, co-existing at the same time.

Alright once you can understand the hypercube, you are ready for the big leagues, 5 dimensions!

First look at this picture, pretty daunting isn't it?

However, never fear, max is here! How about we make that Penteract a little easier to understand hmm?

Now if you can understand the hypercube, you should be able to see that a Penteract is really a hypercube coexisting with another hypercube in the same space. At least, thats the way I think of it.

Okay now if you thought that was easy, maybe I will give you a real challenge. Da da da dada!

Say hello to the 6th dimensional cube, the Hexeract :-)

Okay now lets make this a little bit easier to comprehend. It is really 8 squares contained within each other.

Okay this one should take you a while to get through. Hope you enjoyed thinking in extra dimensions, maybe I will do the seventh dimension later on.

Can you explain the significance of these geometrical objects, other than to make philosophers from mathematicians smile.gif Have they been used in any theories or calculations?

Nice work though, those shapes make your eyes water like Escher on a windy day with hailstones!

The pinkly colored cube is missing a line on one of its faces. From its 9:00 point, as the (hyperdimensional) crow flies, to its 12:00 point.

Very nice btw, the colored lines help a lot it making sense of it all.

Some people are trying to use the calculations from E8 (the most complex geometrical object known to man) as a basis for the calculations for a theory of everything.

Mainly these represent a real world belief that there are not 3 dimensions, but 10.

This mainly deals into the realms of theoretical physics, quantum mechanics, particle physics, astrophysics and mathematics.

Most of the applications for these shapes mainly involve theoretical physics. The string theory for instance, is a good example of how scientists are using these geometrical shapes in scientific theories.

Can you imagine the tenth dimension?:

Very cool video, thanks for the link.

Cool video indeed. Hey Hey brought it to the forum first a good year or so ago. Although thought provoking, the explanation of the dimensions 5 through 10 are purely metaphysical speculation. Not the marriage between Metaphysics and String Theory, as Rob Bryan, the author (a musician by trade, by the way) claims it to be. So, take it with a grain of salt, as they say. Still, cool video.
