"I've always followed my father's advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be goddamn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble.

John Wayne"

From Joesus' sig line. I once heard John Wayne say "Never apologize, son. It's a sign of weakness." He was wrong.

Depends on the context.
If you apologize for being who you are because it offends another person then it would be a sign that you suffer from self worth issues and can't find acceptance with yourself.
Back when black people used to ride in the back of the bus and drink from separate water fountains they also had to apologize for sharing a close space to a white person.
In that case I would agree with John Wayne saying "never apologize." It shows you have respect for yourself, without disrespecting others.

But "never" covers that and every case. Inevitably, one will wrong another, from time to time, perhaps inadvertantly. In those cases, only assholes never apolgize.

I usually prefer that people do not apologize to me. The word "sorry" is so meaningless is todays society.

Sure, for trivial things. There are cases I have experienced where an apology makes all the difference.

A recent example is on the high school robotics team where I serve as a mentor. Two of the students disobeyed an order to put on safety glasses. Later, one realized his transgression and apologized. The other student who did not apologize (and continued to act disrespectfully) was placed on probation. If a student should be injured because we do not enforce safety rules, it could result in the disbanding of the team, a loss to everyone.

Very impressive, you are lucky to lead such an eventful life. I wish I would have had those opportunities when I was in high school. I can understand how that student obeying what you asked for is important to the team. However, I do not agree that an apology is necessary for that action simply because people apologize for just about everything these days, and its usually just to save face, not because they are truly sorry. Maybe my outlook is pessimistic....but I am not so sure about it.

In this case I have known the kid who apologized for three years. He thought about his behavior, developed a regret, and came over to me later and aplogized in private. I think he was sincere, as he knew that I would look on his apology as an honest attempt to improve himself. The one who did not apologize did not have it in his character to even consider it.

I never ask anyone to apologize. It must be the original thought of the one who feels he has done wrong.

But then if someone is being an asshole it would be discordant to ones sense of being to attach yourself to the need for an apology. In that case assholes serve us to detach from social situations that draw us into discord with our sense of Self.
Assholes...everybody has one and they pass shit so we don't have to handle it. wink.gif
Rick
If someone did something really horrible to me deliberately, I would not expect nor would I be inclined accept an apology. It would take an extraordinary explanation.
Joesus
I've looked at everything that I thought was done to me and turned it back to myself and my own creation. I have found where each action created a ripple effect that turned my life toward self realization and greater awareness revealing a gift for my growth.
It may have taken years to realize the effects but it still is what it is.

I can understand that. There is no bad experience if it makes us learn and grow in the long run. However, I was robbed at gunpoint once. Had I been shot, things might be different.
Joesus

Being robbed at gunpoint makes for interesting conversation. I had a girlfriend who was pulled from a car in New York and raped in an alley.
I think I'd rather be robbed at gunpoint.

Hmm. He said "do what I say or I'll blow your fucking head off." His revolver was leveled at my belly at the time. Naturally, I had nothing to say, but did exactly as I was told.
Joesus
Best not to argue with someone who can't tell the difference between your head and you belly...Probably wouldn't accomplish much.

More left-brained, or more right-brained, more Neanderthal or more Cro-Magnon ?
Have you read Stan Gooch`s books ? About the importance of the cerebellum ?
According to Stan Gooch, we are the cross-breeds between Neanderthal Man and Cro-Magnon Man...
