Full Version: Doesn't the Mayan calendar end soon?

Why does it end when it does..?
Whats going on in 2012..?
Or simply a case of not being able to devise one that counted further?
If so, why work with something that has known indescrepencies?
trojan_libido
2012 is viewed as significant because the Mayans believe it was the end of the current age, the Fifth World. I'm pretty sure its been redated to 2028 or some other year anyway, but in terms of why they ended it there, they simply believed they'd be around to make a new calendar when the current one "runs out". The "end of the age" has consistently been viewed as the coming apocalypse, when its almost certainly an astronomical event like the precession of the stars through the zodiac.
Succubus
I read a theory that they foretold a large scale solar allignment of all the systems,
and belived the ensuing energy would cause the progression/pull into the next age.
If they could see that event way back then why are we blind to it happening in five years time?
We could say simply that they were wrong,
but is it compairable to the ancients knowing about the whole solar setup way back then,
and people thinking the Earth was flat only a few hundred years ago?
Have we lost vital knowledge along the way?
trojan_libido
One of two things I think are most probable:

There is no such alignment and to be fair I don't have the skills to check it. I would think if every planet in our solar system was to align at the same time, for instance, then it would be reported.

OR

There has been no announcement because all people need is an excuse that the world is going to end for them to go nuts. Riots and looting, apocalyptic scenarios etc.

I believe the first to be correct, but only because I've seen no evidence of any huge alignment, yet. The second option is entirely possible too, although it seems very unlikely.

Im not under the opinion the world will end in some cataclysmic event soon,
Im just saying its very possible.
lol JJ's ;-) no seriously, just a part of my quest for the truth of all things.
Digging around in ancient peoples minds holds the keys to much of the
lost truths of our own knowledge.

I agree. Actually, I would go as far as saying that digging around all previous forms of life before our own hold the keys to many truths about our knowledge, ourselves, and our future. And I don't mean ancient prophesies or rubish like that. But scientific knowledge.
Succubus
Yes, the bare truth.
I sometimes line up for examination two or more seemingly irellevent known facts,
or just about anything and find their coresponding parts and how they fit together,
giving me more little pieces of the big puzzle of knowledge.

The Calender cycle will end in 2012, the cycle is what it is a cycle. appx 25620 years give or take some years. Don't no if the Mayans did predict the world was comming to a end or just ending a mayan calender
cycle

trojan_libido
That figure is the end of the precessional cycle. Its ridiculous to say the end of the world was predicted because of a calendar with a finite amount of space on it. When you calendar ends at the end of the year, do you cower under the stairs awaiting armageddon? I'd hope not biggrin.gif
Enki
I think they had to miscalculate something.
It is much more probable.
Rick
Besides, if the Mayans knew when the world would end, it would imply that they had access to some "mysterious" (but reliable) source of information that we don't have access to. Not very likely.

Agree. We do not have evidences that they had such access.

But if Archeologists locate remnants of the Magic Mushrooms there, then we should reconsider our point Rick. laugh.gif

They did Enki lol.

Finally found an image of those Maya shrooms.

Interesting that a whole culture sprang up that used these entheogens and saw the movement of their deities as serpent like.

Maybe the serpent in the garden of Eden gave them the knowledge biggrin.gif
Rick
The Enlightenment (17th and 18th century) of Europe taught us that reliable information about the external world comes from science rather than from dreams and visions. The internal world may be a different story.
trojan_libido
Yeah thats true Rick, the external world is all weights and measures, but the internal world is ruled by angels and demons of consciousness. Its the internal world where "God" can appear or make itself known, and since these relics and their makers religions all point to this internal attribute, it should be understood in the modern day without so much fear.
Enki
Trojan! What a picture! wink.gif

Whau! They knew about the Magic Mushrooms!

Rick we must reconsider our views on Maya! wink.gif

What, that they had dreams and visions? We already knew that. It's what you make of or do with your dreams and visions that counts. Their priests split their penises and they sacrificed living people to nonexistent gods.

I just have been joking on the topic. Maya culture demonstrates how the spiritual experiences once being wrongly apprehended may lead astray and even to insanity.
When people consider spirits of the hell or of the primordial world as God/Gods they can even eat shit by considering the procedure as a Devine ritual.

In such experiences, when a person enters into the wardrobe, one does not know whom first he/she will meet in Narnia and what tail he will listen first.

Hope I explained my point of view as clear as possible. smile.gif

Circumcision is worse, at least the priests did it to their own penis. We still sacrifice people in the name of God, or worse Terror. At least the Maya were up front about it biggrin.gif

Seriously though, its just another take on the belief that seems to permeate life. I doubt they could see the future, but despite being ancient maniacal stoners, they were good astronomers who designed the solar calendar with amazing accuracy.

I think the calendar was granted to them by some great unknown who came out of the water.

can you expound on this Enki?

As far as I know, the legends in the region tell that some kind of God came out of water and established rules. I just extended that legend over Maya (if someone really came out of water to one regional nation, then probably he/she could do the same in Maya district as well). Hardly such a primitive from moral point of view culture could derive such an accurate calendar.
Certainly it is not a scientific approach, I just thought that knowledge can percolate over the continent.
If one tribe can make crystal skull, then why another nearby cannot make the same if a merchant of light can travel and teach them?
It is quite a speculative aproach indeed.

I think that the great unknowns still pave paths in our world.
Enki
You are always welcomed dear Dianah.

On Dec 21 2012 the sun will align with the center of the milky way(which is our galaxy by the way =P). The center of the milky way was associated with evil. Nevertheless the Mayan calender has pretty accurately predicted many things.

It takes more than 2 celestial bodies to make an alignment - otherwise you could say we're always aligned to the centre of the milky way...

What is this business about the crystal skulls? I vaguely remember hearing something about them.

You know, by now some gentlemen already explained some of those secrets in Indiana Johns 4. If you watch it along with the above mentioned comments you shall understand quite many things I guess. wink.gif

Hah, okay! I'll have to check it out. biggrin.gif
