For Grandma

Grandma I went home to St. John's today
To have a proper German Mass at last
And it was just like when you went away
My future present embraced by our past

I felt you there as you sat beside me
The window said "Ich bin das Licht der Welt"
I heard your voice and felt what I once felt
With you and Mom and all our family

I wandered the wilderness went astray
But I went home today and found you there
I know I can make it now come what may
Because of your love and your answered prayer

Three days from now on St. Boniface Day
I will gather oak leaves and think of you
And celebrate evergreen memories
Volunteer nasturtiums and wild sweet peas

All that you taught me turns out to be true

Oak of my life Grandma an Gottes Segen
Gott sei Dank Grandma ist Alles gelegen

Graceful piece revealing a bond of trust and love

Let me hear from you,
(hoped I could inspire you a little with my last post)

You did and do inspire me, dearest Franziska.

Grandma would have loved you; indeed I believe that she does love you now, from the other side of the veil which is and can only be withdrawn by love, and love is what you are, what I am, what she is, what life is, what God is.

I will be thinking of you too on St. Boniface Day.

An Gottes Segen ist Alles gelegen,
