The Visitation

A brown squirrel out for a stroll on the fence
Outside my bedroom window looked in on me

We both paused a moment in timeless suspense
To regard each other understandingly

She came by to tell me I will be all right
This is how I understood her anyway

As she sat shining gold in the late spring light
She taught me to believe in magic today

And now I await an opossum tonight
To see what a night creature might have to say
