I'm looking for ways to alter my metabolism so as to prevent muscle catabolism, inhibit glycolysis, and favor lypolysis.

Currently, I'm using the following supplements:
Glutamine -inhibits muscle catabolism
BCAAs - inhibits muscle catabolism
Sodium Citrate - Inhibits glycolysis
Caffeine - increases lypolysis
General Supplement and (occasionally cycling) creatine

Diet
I eat 7-8 times a day to maintain stable insulin levels.
I rarely eat refined sugar products (only before studying/taking a test to improve cognition)
I eat a substantial amount of protein in hopes that my body will favor burning it over my muscle
I drink large quantities of water (the body will store fat to produce water if dehydrated)

Am I missing anything?

Can any of you recommend other supplements or dietary habits?

This is what I do. I only drink water and green tea and sometimes orange juice, mostly water though. I eat things that are healthy but taste good too and I exercise lots through fun activities. Who wants to do boring work outs when you can play sports or do martial arts. Its exercise that will keep you healthy, I would try to find things that are fun but help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Thats the only way you will stick to it, thats why diets fail, you need to stay on a diet for it work. Developing a healthy food system that you want to eat every day is very important.

He didn't say directly that he is trying to lose weight but that seems to be at least part of it along with building muscle mass. Avoiding refined sugar is a very good move. Also avoid flour products. People who give up sugar always turn to bread, pizza, pasta, etc because flour turns rapidly to sugar in the gut. Avoid high sugar fruits like pineapple, dates and raisins. Also avoid all high fat foods such as cheese, nuts and so on. Nuts do have nutritional value so they could be eaten sparingly.

Niacin is good stuff. The kind that isn't time released is likely to cause flushing for up to an hour after ingestion, but some people enjoy this sensation and the rush of blood. Flushing in public can be somewhat embarrassing so I wouldn't recommend taking a bunch of immediate-release niacin just before giving a public speech.

Btw, niacin inhibits cholesterol synthesis and is known to reduce blood lipids and cholesterol levels. In general, this is a healthy thing to do, though extremely low levels of cholesterol have been associated with depression.

I have recently had some bad niacin experiences... I started off with 1000mg of immediate-release nicacin, and took 500mg each day after. By the end of a week my blood pressure dropped so low that I would faint when I stood up. I took another niacin, and my hands turned black, and the blackness started moving up my veigns; I had to work out intensely to get blood circulation going. I also suspect that doing this was extremely hard on my liver function.

I suggest that if you are going to take niacin, get it through something like the LEF Mix--there is plenty of it in there--no need to over do it~

That's a lot. I typically take 100-200 mg per day of immediate release. Chronic administration of 500-1000 mg per day has been associated with liver damage. The slow-release niacin is supposedly harder on your liver than the immediate-release. There are also flush-free sources of niacin, such as inositol hexanicotinate, but I'm not sure that this provides the same lipid and cholesterol lowering benefits of regular niacin. Your experience with your hands turning black is the first time I've heard of that happening. Do you think it was due to reduced blood in your periphery?

I have no idea really...All I know is that it was really scarry. My hands were extremely cold, and the blackness only moved along my veigns. I would be more than happy to do it again for a thourough scientific observation smile.gif

No, I'm actually very lean, and I'm planning to run an Olympic length triathlon.

I'm trying to do anything I can to prevent muscle loss and sustain energy levels during long cardio workouts.

In the past, I've always lost muscle mass every time I switch to an endurance sport, and then I've had to gain it back afterwards. This time, I'm adjusting my diet and supplementation to have my cake and eat it too.

So far, I've been doing quite well...

I currently live in Iowa, but I'm planning to move to another state in June. The problem is, I'm not sure which yet...

So, I haven't really picked a particular race yet. It all depends on where I relocate to.

You mean Kona? It's on the 13th of October.

Sometimes it's televised, but I'm not sure who covers it. It's a great race to watch, but it's really sad watching all of those athletes drop on the marathon. Kona's brutal.

Personally, I think Escape from Alcatraz (link) would be fun to watch. It's supposed to be a very fun event.

Perfect I only 30 miles from home smile.gif The water is pretty damn cold though...
