I was perusing some of the events of 2006 last night, when it struck me that I can no longer afford the costs of politicians.

Forget their exorbitant pensions (at least in the UK); just consider how they are spending the taxpayers money (and don't forget the contractions of services either).

It seems to me that in a sense they are being directed by almost fundamentalist intentions.
Of course , they rarely declare the true purpose of their intentions, decisions and actions.
To do so would invite even more criticism, measurement and admonishment.
They never declare basic things like what the minimum income per person should be (suitably covering all situations in which peopel find themselves).

But if politicians are to be replaced, what should supercede them?

And just as importantly, how can we advance in organisational integrity until Joe Public becomes sufficiently astute to arrive at non-selfish, realistic, fair and equitable judgements of the directions to try to force the politicians (or their replacements)?

For years, the present system of oscillating swings to each extreme of the political spectrum over the years at least seemed to give everyone some of the shout some of the time.

It seems that the Truth may be that no-one knows what is best, and we have to presume that the best is arrived at very gradually, even if it is by trial and error!
