"Finally, and again this is really just a phenomenon of the last 50 years or so, we see the emergence of the Mental stage of society. This stage is marked by the flowering of social and individual freedom throughout the globe, the emergence and empowerment of the individual, and since it is the mental stage, the greater utilizations of the power of mind and thought."
Since the interview in 2001, all that "flowering of social and individual freedom" seems to have been reversed by five years of Republican rule in the USA. Consider the barring of stem cell research, a nearly passing constitutional amendment to ban flag protests, proposed teaching of creationism in schools, warrantless wiretapping, the extension of the "patriot act," etc. etc.
