Full Version: Targeting NGF to regain lost cognition

As you can probably guess from the title of this post, I am looking for ways to regrow neurons lost through various....experiments, most notably having to do with the NMDA and serotonergic systems (ahem: MDMA). I have been clean for over a year but still cant seem to shake the fog that formed through about a year and a half of knocking my chemistry out of whack. Though i should probably mention that the majority of that span was spent smoking MJ, with the last month or so venturing into MDMA, mushrooms, and DXM (the latter two causing the borderline psychotic episode that caused me to stop altogether). The DXM is my prime concern though, especially with reports of it causing lesions in the cerebral cortex..though this was a one time, high dose endeavor. I would estimate 600-800mg. I always took the ALA before any of this, and also added 5HTP when doing E.

I have not done enough research to piece together exactly what i have done, and cannot begin to factor in the emotional aspect of thought process alteration that helped bring on the decline in the first place, but i was hoping some of you could offer some broad spectrum insight into what pathways the afformentioned drugs alter, and how chronic depression can sabotage ones efforts to correct the actual chemical imbalance. Any recommendations as far as supplementation would be appreciated as well. From the reasearch i have done, targeting NGF through the addition of Huperzine A, Vinpocetine, Hydergine (or Sulbutiamine), and Idebenone (along with my current regimen of Lechithin, ALCAR, and R-ALA) seems like the ticket. This, of course, accompanied by an equal measure of mental work - meditation, thought redirection, etc...

Thanks for the help...I apologize for the lack of organization; i guess it comes with the nature of the question and the mental condition associated with it lol. I find this forum very interesting and look forward to hanging around here.

exercise and nootropics

Haha, that is a little TOO broad of a spectrum. Am i targeting the right subsystem (NGF)?
lucid_dream
I'm thinking of clearing the mental fog and enhancing cognition. Any relation to NGF is speculative
rzablade
OK, all clear, thanks again.

I wouldn't try to push it too hard with substances, but would fall back on the body's natural healing power. Eat a balanced diet and get lots of exercise. Stay socially active and play sports of all kinds. Get mental exercise with reading and conversation (and this forum participation too). Practice mental discipline with weight lifting or yoga, and then direct that mental power intellectually. Pursue love for happiness by making your partner as happy as possible. Help build culture and society, for that gives meaning to life and can help defeat the enemy.

All of those suggestions look great, especially when one realizes that the problem cannot be purely chemical. Good stuff.

NGF is one of many targets you should focus on to begin repair of the damage you have caused. However since your main focus is NGF I'm not aware of any research on vinpocetine or sulbutiamine (which I do not consider a nootropic) working on NGF.

ALC works on the NGF receptors, N-PEP-12 is a NGF like compound, L-Huperzine A works on NGF, and several other compounds (Methylcobalamin, P-5-P, Bacopa, Ashwaganda) can be of benefit to you as well.

Thanks for the list.

What other subsystems can be supplemented for (that may have been damaged)? NGF is just the one that stuck out in my mind.

Bcl-2, CREB, BDNF come to mind.

royal jelly?

Seems promising..

Seems like piracetam would be a good safe choice to start with.

There is a whole thread on Stablon. I believe it should do the trick.

Nice image dutch84.

Thanks LifeMirage.

It was part of a powerpoint presentation I made for an Attention course in undergrad.
