I don't agree with the last line for obvious reasons, but I didn't omit it because I wanted to post the quote in its entirety.

It appears to be one of those email man-in-the-loop viruses. It also appears to be fraudulant. Andy Rooney, while not exactly a liberal, isn't that hard over into the conservative bigotry either.

I don't know what's wrong with me, but I can't read that quote without hearing Andy Rooney's voice in my head reading it to me! I didn't watch 60 minutes the day he said these things, but I could almost bet money that he said it. Just a gut feeling. As for the conservative bigotry allegation I don't agree with you. He is just saying it like it is. If these comments sound too conservative is because only an extreme conservatist would say things like that in public.. The rest of us, while knowing that what he is saying is totally legit, would rather prefer keep the thoghts to ourselves or just not deal with these issues all together. It's a behavior called diplomacy(or generally accepted hypocrecy, if you wish).
Hey Hey

Hey Hey
Sorry, just ignore me. I've got too much time on my hands. Hang on, that can't be true - I don't believe in time. See what I mean?

Are you willing to defend the statement (from original post):

"I have the right 'NOT' to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off."

"Intolerance" means more than just avoiding association. It means restricting the rights of the non-tolerated.

"I have the right 'NOT' to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off."

"Intolerance" means more than just avoiding association. It means restricting the rights of the non-tolerated.

-----------
The most logical method of defending his statement is to limit discussion to his words, not yours. To be tolerant, according to Websters, includes 'to suffer to be or to be done without prohibition, hindrance, or contradiction." In this case, it would appear that the author (whether Rooney or not) reserves the right to at least contradict the views of those individuals who are "different, weird, or tick me off." If ability and intention to restrict the rights of others were intended, likely that author would have said "I have the right to discriminate against..." which would be much harder to defend.
gm
Andy Rooney never said those things.

Andy Rooney himself denied it in 2003, saying:
"About a year ago, I became aware of a more serious theft of my name and it is so hurtful to my reputation that it calls for legal action against the thief. Hundreds of people have written asking if I really wrote the 20 detestable remarks made under my name that have had such wide circulation on the Internet.

Some of the remarks, which I will not repeat here, are viciously racist and the spirit of the whole thing is nasty, mean and totally inconsistent with my philosophy of life. It is apparent that the list of comments has been read by hundreds of thousands of Americans, many of whom must believe that it accurately represents opinions of mine that I don't dare express in my column or on television. It is seriously damaging to my reputation"
