Water Rock
%%%%%%%%
A huge black stone blockmeasuring
feet in height and five feet in breadth
is available since time unknown
in our water tank at the beginning of the village

As tender youth we swam across the water to reach the block
And felt great as if we are ace swimmers
As long as the water is full to the brim in the tank
The taste of our fresh water well lying just behind
Is so sweet and drinkable

We closely watch the rise in the water levels
When ever there is incessant rain during the season
As we are quite afraid of the inundation of the village
If the water level crosses the height of the rock

We use to channel the water out through a passage
Dug for the purpose on the eastern side of the village tank
We feel comfortable when the levels are within the bearable limits
And we never heard it hard any time about the inundation of the village

When the water flows to the brim all the agri fields in the village
Start dressing the greenery at its best possible fashion
Every villager of ours owes a lot to the water rock for spreading peace and prosperity
To the entire village all the time and in every need of the hour

When drops of rain stop to come down at times
The water rock becomes very hot like an angry human
And showers all epithets name by name as if cursing the respective GODS
It spreads all sympathy and sails with us in dusk and dawn

I really enjoyed this, Supani, and I am fascinated by the local history involved. I always wonder about things like that rock, and how and why things are as they are. I found this poem especially visual and memorable. I would love to visit Guntur someday, and see the water tank and the rock.

Thanks and love,

+Stevie
