Neurobiofeedback is a remarkable technology that utilizes an EEG machine, your mind, and a computer to alter your brainwaves for several uses ranging from mental illnesses such as depression to improving concentration and processing abilities in healthy people.

20-60 (20-30 minute) sessions twice weekly are normal and costs range per clinic.

And if you buy a machine yourself, or build one, it is possible to do as many sessions as you can take and get results faster. Sometimes less is more but for significant training having only a couple of sessions a week with a therapist is going to take a long time and a lot of money.

IF the usual fee for one time is around $70 or a little more, one can get supplies, electrodes and the machine for the price of 18 sessions, which is not very much for any purpose.

have you tried these products, Lifemirage? Do they work?

There's a lot of data that it works.

The problem is, the field is still, after 30 odd years, not advancing as fast as something like nanotechnology because nobody has put in the money. Now the clinicians are working harder to do something about it and coming up with better protocols, assessments with which to plan the treatment (I prefer the word training) and additional modalities (like light and low-field magnetic stimulation) to make it faster so maybe this will change.

In my own experience, I read Asperger's can be helped in 100-200 sessions. I've done close to 300 sessions now and there's still much work to do and because I've been doing other things as well, I can't prove that it's the biofeedback that has helped me. I think that it's easier to see evidence about physical stuff like tension headaches or migraines because when they're gone they really are gone whereas it's harder to say when your depression is truly lifting, etc.

For people wanting to do their own double blind studies some machines feature sham feedback but I've never bothered.

What exactly does a session consist of?

I've tried it for about 20 sessions and did see an overall improvement. Paid about $25 a session, but i think it was a package deal. I do plan to have more sessions for enhancement purposes later this year.

While hooked up to an EEG machine you look at a computer screen. The computer analyses your EEG, which displays it on the screen. The visual programs induce your brain to change your EEG to target state. If you've even seen Lawmower Man that give you an exaggerated idea.

I would suggest working only with a center that can provide such service for a proper evaluation.

Lifemirage, $25 is AFAIK an excellent price so you're fortunate in a way.

But home training is considered a valid practise by many if not most clinicians and they sometimes sell machines and software themselves. Google "eeg neurofeedback home training" for more information.

Of course it requires education and experimentation, and may not yield as good results as quickly as training with a experienced practitioner but if you can pack many times more sessions in the same time it's possible to change that.

Lucid_dream, a session is usually 45-60 minutes and consists of 20-30 minutes of actual biofeedback and the rext of the time is spent on evaluating your progress, getting relaxed & ready, etc.

Anyone know where to get the best price on these?

If you're talking getting your own.. i have a Pocket-Neurobics (www.pocket-neurobics.com) Pendant EEG myself now. I used to have their Pocket A-1 standalone but I loved going wireless. www.brainquiry.nl sells a wireless unit for approximately the same price ($500-$600) but I don't think it's as popular.. these are meant to be used with the BioExplorer (www.cyberevolution.com) software.

Then there's Brainmaster etc older manufacturers which have their own software but many of them also link to BioExplorer. It was only about 1-2 weeks ago that I saw a unit with software on eBay - the price was not high.

I'd build an OpenEEG if I knew enough electronics.

Oh, cheap is not always good (i guess you already knew that)... someone warned about smart braingames - the unit is not high quality.

Will use this space for a self-plug:

I'm selling my old neurofeedback equipment. Includes HEG so I think the price is right.

On eBay, ends 19th.
