Watching

I never felt this patriotic till
These patriots took my country from me
I fear that they will never give it back

I know now what I lost I feel the chill
Of emptiness where my home used to be
They stole its heart and broke it in Iraq

And if I try to talk to them they yell
They tell me to shut up and go to hell
(When they speak of hell I wonder if I
Am already there now before I die)

They say that only they know what is best
And for me to just stick to poetry
Just write my books and they will do the rest

But they remind me to watch what I say
That liberty has limits as I see
That freedom is no longer free today

Then they remind me: they are watching me
