Transcendental Sonnet #1406:
Almost Midnight on the Fourth of July
Almost midnight on the Fourth of July
And all the fireworks blown up and burnt out
Leave an acrid tang on the shattered air
Men shot from car to car and more will die
Out on the freeways still tonight no doubt
Brawling driving drunk crashing everywhere
I brought in Grandma's forty-eight star flag
And I could taste it as I replaced it
To its safekeeping as troubled thoughts nag
Scary people scurry and I worry
As they rush to board their flights and hurry
Through the smoky night before the red light
Awakens us all to reality
Blind justice is dead as we shall soon see
