Transcendental Sonnet #1388:
Had I Never Known
They say it is better to
Love even if you lose
Assuming that you choose
To continue and that you
Are not hollowed-out inside
And the feeling you have died
Ultimately passes
Until the time you do
I wonder is it true?
I look at the masses
All of these people I see
Are they as lonely as me?
Perhaps it would be better had I never known
Had my innocence remained that I am alone

My friend and former professor Frank Pooler wrote the most beautiful Christmas song way back in the Second World War when he was nineteen years old, called "Merry Christmas Darling."
It has the most hauntingly beautiful line at the end of it, which is repeated, making Christmas, love, separation, life and death all even more bittersweet than usual, and this is how it goes:
"I wish I were with you, I wish I were with you."
Misty... I wish I were with you...
