Transcendental Sonnet #1285:
Papa Lance's Poetry Class

"Be kind to one another"

Leave your e-g-o at the door
Or else see it go through the floor

The better they are the kinder they are
The bigger they think they are the more small
Leave it outside in a mayonnaise jar

Pride seems to precede a precipitous fall
Those who are in need are most generous of all

Climb out of that box into paradox!
Into humanity into reality
Come and be free as poet and person with me

Monkey should you be an ass
Long-eared monkeys shall not pass
Monkey see and monkey do
Not let ego make an ass of you

I hope no one is offended by this silly sonnet! I certainly don't mean any of you, my friends and fellow poets; no, I was just wondering about teaching a poetry class, how I would go about it, what I would say on the first day.

See, I've got this California Community College Instructor Credential I got back in 1985--before some of my friends were born, including some of you, no doubt--and it's just going to waste. So I was wondering about a class. I don't even know if I would be any good at teaching, actually.

Hope this made you smile awhile, in any case.

Respect and solidarity.

Love,

+Papa Lance / +Stevie

Not let ego make an ass of you

smile a while to bring out the best of you
it is hale and heathy but may be a little bit slow
let the essence of life do spring and flow
till the poem about humans start beaming to glow
