I made good friends with a girl in a Napster chatroom. We had an extraordinary relationship. We lived in different worlds but shared a similar mindset. She was both bright and witty. She inspired me to write. She became my muse.

One day she sent me the strangest email full of dark and morbid fantasies based on death and graveyards. She sounded suicidal. I wanted to try and cheer her up. So I wrote this for her. It's just a bit of fun, and should be viewed in that context.

Restless Corpses

Restless corpses stir and howl into the night
But I am drawn towards a calm inviting light.

Passing gravestones
standing sentry over silent sleeping bones
I make my way towards this one particular stone
from whence there comes a weird and scary, sounding
noise of throbbing, beating, knocking, pounding.

Restless corpses stir and howl into the night
But I am drawn towards a calm inviting light.

Arriving at the stone I stand and stoop to wipe away the dust
And see the name inscribed upon it is a girl
I've come to know and trust
In fact, to be honest, someone I'd never really met
Just a girl who I used to chat to on the internet.

Restless corpses stir and howl into the night
But I am drawn towards a calm inviting light.

Suddenly a fist clenched hand bursts straight up
through the hardened earth and grit,
Disappears then re-emerges with a second mit,
And if that were not enough
Holy s---!!
A torso struggled bit by bit
To wriggle out from deep down in its graveyard pit
And get a grip
Upon the ground no further than a metre from my feet.
Then this half alive and half dead freak
Began to look at me and speak

Restless corpses stir and howl into the night
But I am drawn towards a calm inviting light.

It's funny but the first thing I thought and said
Was Christ baby, you look short
But then she said, ‘f--- you man, are you blind,
Cant you see I've left my legs behind’
And peering through the mist
which swirled about and looked like smoke
I now quite clearly saw that this was not a joke
For down inside the coffin were the
separated feet, legs and muff
Of what I now knew must be,
could only be the skeletal remains
less the resurrected body arms and brains
of my dear cyber friend, Ms Jennifer Ruff.

Restless corpses stir and howl into the night
But I am drawn towards a calm inviting light.

Hey I thought,
This is outa sight
If I had any sense I'd take flight
but drawn in by this extraordinary light
I feel the full seductive force of this poor wretched mite,
as it bleats it's cries for help.
Is this not she methinks
who used to keep me up
beyond the normal waking hours
my muse for whom I once wrote 'de ping a di ting'
this lovely stranger from across the seas
whose light shone out and reached into my soul,
this angel from another world whose soothing wit,
on many nights my only company,
came fleetingly and magically
into my room
to lighten up my sad and lonely life..................

Restless corpses stir and howl into the night
But I am drawn towards a calm inviting light.

Damn. Look at the time. I'm at it again.
Staying up late writing to you.
But I thought it important that you knew
That I cared
And that we shared
An unusual but very worthwhile thing,
A sorta kinda friendship type a ting.

I would like to write more but hopefully,
there's enough
Of the right kind of stuff
to breath a little life into your heart
and make you smile a while
and with any luck
Make you less gruff, and more tough
My dear dear Jennifer Ruff.

Right now
My one and only emotion
Is a wish to reach
a hand
across the ocean
But alas,
I can only do the best I can
from here in distant Enge lan.
With whatever words of wisdom
I can muster once I've sussed the
meaning of whatever sad and sorry tales
you tell me in your enigmatic mails.

Restless corpses stir and howl into the night
But I am drawn towards a calm inviting light.

I mean, for all I know this could be a windup
perhaps a lyric from whatever new
hip hop tune you've heard.
How am I supposed to know,
That's the trouble with the internet,
what you see is not always what you get,
but I bet I'm right
your life right now is not very bright,
so hold tight.
I’ll get the next flight

Such a sweet thought! This is a very kind gesture, and a very nice piece of work! The lines working as a chorus worked well with it.

~Much Love~
