If a receptor-ligand complex undergoes endocytosis, the ligand goes to the lysosome, but the receptor sometimes gets recycled. I know that ubiquitin chains mark molecules for destruction by the lysosome, but what causes the ligand and the receptor to go separate ways? When the receptor also goes to the lysosome, what molecular mechanism actually caused the downregulation? What tells the cell that the receptor needs to be destroyed, and why? Why do some receptors get recycled almost every time, while other types of receptor will down- or upregulate with the slightest fluctuation in ligand levels? I don't need to know about evolutionary reasons, just about the molecular mechanism of action. I hope you can help me, because I can't find the answer anywhere.
