I had the thought the other day that thoughts might be kind of like fractals http://archives.math.utk.edu/ICTCM/VOL10/C027/paper.pdf

Something like our biology and experiences dictate how our brains are connected physically, but any given thought may arise in a multitude of different ways, maybe even random ways.

It is how I would design a good video game level anyhow, so I imagine evolution may favor a similar manner of thinking.
