It is a method in quantum mechanics to determine the lowest ground state energy of a system. The math looks crazy (http://www.ccc.uga.edu/lec_top/hf/node6.html) but really isn't too bad.

Basically the idea is that you define the relationship of every particle in the system to every other particle based on simple Coulombic type interactions. You can relate each particle with a vector to create a sort of energy surface sort of like plotting the current of a river. T

he method is used to calculate ground state energies of complex systems, but there are some cool philosophical things that come up. I will touch on those later.
