Herbal supps are not meant to replace pharmaceutical drugs. At the same time herbals shouldn´t be understimated at all because some can be as potent or more than a specific drug with the difference that you know what to expect from the drug for the good and for the bad and you know it´s been created under strict control. On the other side with herbals you are somehow blind about interactions and side effects unless you´ve got some knowledge on it and their making process is generaly ok.
Self-research is needed if you want to start supplementing an herbal supp.

Cannot find where the UCLA Center for Clinical Nutrition is doing their press release stuff, but Dr. Heber is one on the most brilliant men I have ever met. Get a copy of his book if you would like to learn about nutrition.

If you were to take into account the studies surrounding placebos, you might acknowledge the fact that the person taking the cure has a lot to do with how the cure affects the body.... be it chemically manufactured or out of your own back yard garden.

Every study includes a control. Placebo generally accounts for about 30% of the effect either way. This applies to just about everything--aspirin include.
