Is a doodle art? (Order is in the eye of the beholder. Not all beholders have equal eyes. Not all beholders have eyes. Is there order without a beholder? Does it matter? Philosophically, that is?)

deterministic repetition, however, can simultaneously and harmoniously co-exist with randomness and trigger exciting optical, hence neurological activity!

Art is all about opinions, nothing more. Art fills space. But space has a purity and art pollutes that. When I used to sell paintings to pay the rent as a student (before you were born) many people asked if I could do a painting, "To fill a space." I used to say, "I wish I could afford some space." I don't think any of them got it. I used to paint in oils on canvas only. I made the stretchers, stretched the canvas, painted, made the frames, delivered the complete work. My job was to fill space. But it also filled my life, through days and nights. My studying suffered and my wellbeing. So I gave up painting. I have a blank canvas on an easel in my study .... waiting. But I know what will happen. I value my space too much nowadays. I rather like the blank canvas. Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it, LOL, |

I suppose that at some point painting stopped being enough fun. Then it bacame microbiology that propelled you? I was studying to be a biomedical scientist at the time. My microbiology study and career came quite a bit later. (Actually the microbiology was microbial biochemistry - I don't consider myself a microbiologist, but, as you know, one picks up a great deal within an academic environment. I have many friends/colleagues who teach/research in other disciplines, including the art, the subject of the current discussion.) |

I must be very lucky. I do engineering because it's fun. I don't think I would do anything that didn't result in fun overall. For example, going door to door for a political candidate is "fun" because in the end your candidate wins (or has an increased probability of winning), and that's fun. The standing in the sun, tired feet, and walking are uncomfortable, but the ends justify the means.

Engaged in a dialogue about the piece in particular without all the side dishes! Not that academic study of the arts necessarily provides one with the skills or ability to accomplish artist works. Much artist prowess is achieved through practice and the passage of time. I am not an artist, I know that. I haven't served enough time on the easel, as it were. I knocked up the little drawing above to provide some colour and a human form within, that much modern art contains, in order to enable a discussion on what might be considered art (well, abstract art really). I know that you are very experienced in abstract colour-bright painting. I have found many of your paintings appealing. But I am still at a loss as to why we consider meanderings of colour and form "art', whereas the form and colour irregularities in a storm sky itself are not generally considered 'art' but merely beautiful or perhaps even ugly 'nature' (unless photographed, sketched or painted, of course). I suppose there is some overlap (maybe even complete overlap) by the religiously incoherent when they sometimes describe nature as 'God's art'. Often the attraction through interest (say, in the method employed), the style of the work to fill a particular space (important this as much 'art' is sold or endowed to someone with a 'space' to fill), and so on, is what is deemed an explanation for the conferred term 'art', instead of a more deep analytical description of the work and its effect on the human emotions or psyche. The same emotions can be stimulated by something that is not art, so those emotions were not evolved specifically for the purposes of appreciating art. Art is perhaps something that can maintain a stimulatory presence when other stimulatory factors are absent or diminished. For example, the painting of a beautiful woman resides on the wall when night has come and company has left. Much art is sensual, erotic or pornographic? Maybe there lies a primordial origin for some 'art'? |

That's easy. By definition, it's not art unless it's an artifact. It's the human creativity we praise. |

The business was more a pain than a joy! Not every try is a success, but the fun must lie in the attempt. I had a software business for 10 years and it eventually folded. I had fun while it lasted. |

I use C, C++, and Java. See
http://chess.captain.at for example (a Java applet). I'm sure Objective C is one of the numerous popular variants on C such as C-sharp, etc., and would be relatively easy to learn. However, I am quite busy now with my numerous volunteer activities (university alumni association, high school robotics team, political club presidency, bonsai club, etc.) and am not intereted in a programming project. But thanks for thinking of me. |
