When

Some say they feel we were deceived
By those who taught us what
They thought they had to and believed
Some do but I do not

Themselves deceived they could not know
And none of them could see
Not curious enough to grow
They never would be free

They thought they did but did not know
Too careful to begin
I think they meant well even though
They shut me out from in

Though not intending to deceive
They did as they were told
But could not see could not believe
At any age too old

Now I see they were afraid then
Of our asking when and
They made us wait but God knows when
And now I understand

They simply could not simply be
And thought it better to
Avoid too much reality
So this they did and do

They did the best they could with such
Assumptions as they had
Though their presumptions cost us much
And some of us went mad

But through the madness I survived
What others had to miss
And here at last I have arrived
At now in spite of this

And I forgive them all now as
I hope for better days
Though I remember how it was
I always have always

And that was then and this is now
As that is always then
And now as then I wonder how
But now is always when
